Usually do one of these before the trade period but was caught-up with other stuff this year so here is my post-trade period update! This is what I have at the moment. As you can see, firstly the list is STACKED in terms of talent (which we already knew) but is also pretty close to being completely full as it is. If what I have is correct, then we have 36 primary list, 4 Cat A and 1 Cat B locked in for next year which leaves us with limited options in terms of drafting next month and SSP/MSD in 2025.

If I had to guess, I'd say we are likely to delist-then-rookie one or both of Gunston and/or Breust for flexibility. Regardless, we can only intake a max of 2 players to primary/Cat A list at the moment plus the option of another Cat B player if we want (which I suspect we will re-sign Bennetts with).

As usual, if you spot any mistakes then please let me know :)

Warm hermI suppose the learning is that trading for a mega star makes sense if you are on the cusp of winning a premiership.

It doesn’t make sense if you are a poor team and are pinning all your hopes on a mega star trade to turn your clubs fortunes around.

We also have some decent depth options that may want to leave for gametime too. They could be traded for more picks, etc.
I feel this will be something that happens wether we do or don't make a move for Harley. There's more than a few on our list that could crack other teams best starting team.

The picks are the least of Hawthorns problems.

The salary will be a disaster. If this group of Hawks are very good - and it looks like they might be - then a lot of players are going to want to get paid over the next few years. Wizard, Dear, Day, Newcombe, Mass, Meek, Ward, Mckenzie are all going to be on pretty hefty pay rises for their next contact.

If anyone wants to know what happens when you pay one guy too much - Hird screwing his club as usual - see the bombers after 2000. They lost Hardwick, Caracella, Blumfield and Heffernan and never won another thing.

Cats will have a spare plot ready to go

Don’t think anyone is believing in him to be some messiah and deliver premierships, most think we’ll get there anyway. Our list is already the best rounded in the comp, I don’t think we have any player in our b22 that isn’t at least a B grader. The only way to improve such a list is to start getting the A level talent in such as Harley.

If Carlton bomb out we could have Number 1 or 2 in the 2025 draft. We can dream!

I think they will rally and finish around 8/9.

I second this.

Every week that goes by without news of Worps singing makes me a little bit nervous.
Nah, probs means we're gonna land multiple 'big fish' this off season & we're still trying to work out how to structure it all

Honest question has trading for a mega super star ever actually won a premiership?

Judd to Cartlon, GAJ to Gold Coast, Buddy to the Swans all to a lesser or greater extent didn’t work. And all much better players when they were traded for than what Reid currently is.

The one time it did was Cameron to the Cats. But the Cats were already a strong team, he was more the finishing touch.
Dangerfield and Cameron were both RFA so geelong had an upper hand. But absolutely fit the bill as star players who eventually landed a premiership.

Also Tom Lynch at Richmond. Caddy and Prestia before that were pretty good recruits.

Melbourne got Lever, May and Langdon.

We gave up a first rounder for Jonno O'Rourke and won the flag.

Then you game to include Burgoyne.

I have an old boss who used to say: "Home is where your mother is."

Is Geelong/the Geelong region where his mother is?
Bannockburn. Same direction as Geelong, but not Geelong.

I have work mates who travel in from Banno, so it's not exactly a journey to get to if he wanted to see family. And he's no Ollie Henry.

All true, I guess the failures tend to stick in the memory more than the successes.

I can’t be arsed but it would be interesting if someone went back over say the last 20 years and rated the success of/ failure rate of the big megastar trades.

I lived in Geelong and the area for several years in the 90s, my olds still live there, my brother lives in Barwon Heads. I would definitely consider Bannockburn to be in the Geelong region.

If Worps end up at the cats, I’ll be spitting…

tbf Bannockburn is a 20min drive to Geelong.

I'm aware it's close to Geelong, but it's not like it's a 5 hours drive from Melbourne. You could get there from Dingley in an hour and a bit and I'm sure Worps lives closer to the city than that. There's really no "Go home" factor to it, I don't know why it keeps getting brought up?

I'm not saying he wants to go home but if someone does want to be close to their family, then a 20min drive (assuming he lived in Geelong) compared to a 1:30min drive (without any traffic) is a fair difference.

I think we have very different ideas of what constitutes a "fair difference".

We definitely do, I'd take travel to see my family that is almost 5 times quicker over the one that takes 5 times longer. Would be great if you wanted to quickly pop in after work or there was an emergency.
Obviously not everyone would worry about the travel time, but I do think it is something that players would certainly consider.

Sorry mate, I find it extremely hard to believe that a player who reportedly loves his club and coach, that has worked so hard to get himself to where he is with said club and coach, developed relationships and is finally coming into a premiership window would pack it all in for 60 minutes less to Mum and Dads.
