Taylor and Bond were the positives today. Thought both showed that they belong and if they can keep their spots, they will improve and become regulars. Bond could easily take over Lairds spot and deserves another contract.

Taylor needs to play to get better, leave him. Thought filthy stood up and won it in the end, he’s the class that will win us a final

Unfortunately Jones needs to be moved on, he’s been terrible since he came back and has offered nothing at all.
Surely Dowling gets a crack? As sub at least.
We've tried Jones in a few roles since coming on, including as a stopper, but it's just not worked.

AFC website match report:
"BEST
West Coast:
Kelly, McCarthy, Shanahan, Ginbey, Ryan

Adelaide: Laird, O’Brien, Rankine, Dawson, Soligo "

Our 'best', Laird?? Then O'Brien?? :confusedv1:
I must've watched a different game.
I wonder how the Coaches' votes will go.
Must have looked at the stats only.
Laird gt a lot of it but was utter trash. His panic kicks in the back half were unforgivable for someone with his experience levels. ROB was ordinary as well. Soligo's defensive efforts were also pretty poor.

ROB was bad.

Nah he wasn't bad, but he was just okay against probably the worst starting ruckman in the AFL

Couple of times ROB let Flynn get a clearance from ROB's own tapwork far too easily. Outside of that ROB was serviceable.

I dont know if it is RoB or instruction or tactical but the few taps I saw in this game and from other games he is trying to get on the same side as his opponent and literally boundary ruck in the middle

The clearance stuff was probably the only area I thought ROB was done in. Usually his follow up work, especially defensively is decent to good, but he let Flynn escape with the ball a few times, particularly from the centre bounce. He's not alone having a dog of a day out of the middle though.

ROB had a good tapwork game. Controlled hit outs and we absolutely dominated centre clearances.

Around the ground he and Flynn had a decent duel. I actually think Flynn crashed in harder and impacted more contests - in the air and at ground level. We were back to nice ROB, too easily brushed aside instead of the angry, something to prove ROB of previous games.

Laird was excellent for the most part I thought but his game was blighted by 2.5 howlers. The idiotic dump kick that didn't even clear the D50, the stupid zero awareness tackle in Q4 and him and Milera were involved in that fluffing about with handball passage at the start of Q3. All cost goals. Can't afford seniors to be making rookie errors. His good was very good - as clean at ground level as anyone in our team on what was a fumbly, error-prone day. On balance, he maybe sneaks into our best 5 or 6 but I wouldn't have him any higher.

Chasing guernseys is exhaustings. Our boys put in the effort but like Hawthorn the Eagles shut down the next possession. We need to play teams that go head to head with their opponent rather than a tactical team in finals.
Nah the boys didn't turn up and the Eagles turned up breathing fire which they maintained most of the day. They caught our boys napping big time and we never really matched their intensity all day until very late in the game. Amazing what pressure can do if it's maintained. Kudos to the Eagles and their coaches for being so up for the fight.

TBH, now that i've exhaled and slept on it, it was a pretty good result to sneak out of that stadium with the win and a big lesson. If there was ever a game to teach this young list to never go into a game expecting a win, then that was it.

Bring a lack of intensity against any team and you go down. Getting the lesson now, is as valuable as the points. I expect the boys to come out breathing fire next game.

Yeah I liked lairds game except for that dump kick in D50. Unfairly treated on this board sometimes.

He's playing well in defence. Clean and dependable as a defender. Gets in the right spots to intercept. Lacks hurt factor with his disposals like always, but this isn't as important with the role he's playing now (versus midfield).

I don’t think it’s breathing fire that’s required. It’s just work rate. Think about ANB and Keays yesterday. There was basically no intensity from these guys when usually they’re both manic. That was reflected across the board.

Don't forget the hold late in the 4th quarter.......

I'm almost hesitant to ask... but is it what good teams do?

Phone it in against lowly teams. Do just enough to win. Save the good football and high effort games for when it matters.

It's been so long since we've been any good that I've forgotten

I don't see it that way. I think we were just off, and West Coast were on. Then we panicked, played dumb, instinctive, structure-less football and nearly cost ourselves the match. Fortunately we were playing the bottom side and so were able to win anyway through grinding it out.

That performance was very concerning. Hopefully it was just a blip, because if we see that kind of play against a half-decent opponent it's going to have a different ending.

Did I read our running numbers were way down? Curious as to whether that was because we didn't show WC enough respect, subconsciously trying to not get injured with finals approaching, or if we deliberately didn't go hard to save ourselves for Collingwood..

Is Burgess that smart?
Possibly both given the short turnaround.

The burgess stuff on this board is out of control.

I would say to a degree, but Sunday we were several degrees past that degree in effort.

Wake up call for a lot of players. Fortunately for us it came with minimal consequences other then dinged pride.

Go to the AFL app and and look at the game tracker (it’s the last tab in the game summary to the right of player stats and team overview). If you scroll to the bottom of the tracker you will see team stats such as distance run etc. compare to other games and you will note our effort was 10% off compared to other games - doesn’t sound like a lot but that’s pretty huge.

I also note Curtin for example didn’t make top 5 in distance covered whereas he’s usually top 2 most weeks recently. Another example of being down on work rate. ANB and Keays were others who seemed off on work rate.

Whether it was mental or physical who knows. No doubt the ground was heavy - it’s been so wet over here in the west.

I think every team gets a Mulligan, but not every team wins the Mulligan
