The Scores from Turnover stat reminded me that I was thinking during the game that we weren't allowing Melbourne to create any meaningful play. They were almost totally reliant on our turnovers for scoring.

Just a brilliant start to the season and one that makes you proud to call yourself a Port supporter.

From the impact of the young kids, to the roughing up of Gawn, to the game Wattsy played against his old team, it really had it all.

Bring on the first home game this weekend!

Karlos Amon is very quickly growing on me already this year.

He is such a skillful and celever player, just needed that Port Adelaide about him to take the next step.

In the second quarter when Butters kicked his first goal, our skill set was amazing. There was a bounce at CHB which Boak dished of a very qucik handball to Amon who then delivered the most glorious and perfectly weighted handball over the top to maybe it was Rocky who then delivered a sexual kick to Marshall, who dished off to a flowing Duursma and well the rest is history.

if we can keep these skills up, we surely can sneak into the 8 this year!

The only things missing is taps/knock ons to advantage. Not from the ruckmen but around the ground. It was noticable how much we tried to keep the ball moving not only with handballs but with knock ons.

Our real test is going to be doing this against teams with much stronger frontal pressure.

Have you purchased a subscription to Champion Data?

All power to you if you have, that's commitment.

Can anyone confirm, that a Kick In after a behind, where a player leaves the 10m square is counted a kick in their disposal count.
If so Houston and Burton are going to pump up their stats nicely.

Lol no...Fox Sports do a tracker at the end of the game which tells you all you need to know. I figured it'd be nice to have a record of all the stats in the review thread.

XAVIER DUURSMA (Port Adelaide)

The first round draft pick delivered in spades for coach Ken Hinkley, with Duursma not only slotting a classy checkside goal, but racking up 16 touches. At only 74 kilograms Duursma remains slight, but there was plenty to like from his AFL debut.

CONNOR ROZEE (Port Adelaide)

Rozee’s name was pencilled in for a Round One debut from the moment he walked through the doors at Port Adelaide. The No. 5 draft pick knows how to find the ball and did so on 18 occasions against Melbourne.

ZAK BUTTERS (Port Adelaide)

There was so much to like about Butters’ debut: Two goals, plenty of speed and a fearlessness that allowed him to take the game on. That same fearlessness led to a few mistakes, but Butters already looks like a player who has the capacity to stand up in big moments.

WILLEM DREW (Port Adelaide)

It was a memorable debut for Drew, who racked up 21 touches, five tackles and four clearances, including three centre clearances. A win and a Gatorade shower on the hallowed MCG turf only added to Drew’s first AFL hit out.

Good comment. By the last quarter I found myself fairly comfortable with Melbourne's entries from a slow build, as our defensive structures worked well to beat that away. But Melbourne were able to create a number of goals with fast movement and midfielders overloading the top of the defensive 50, so we may still have some work to do there.

That 1 point to Salem was a pity point.

Sure he got a bit of the ball but was pretty ineffectual and if he had an opponent at all he was soundly beaten by them.

Burton was way better and more influential on the outcome. Same for clurey who owned their forwards.

Kick Efficiency - Port 71%, Melbourne 69%

I know it was dry and not a greasy, slippery night game, but AFL average over a season is about 64%.

Keep it regularly above AFL average and we will have a big year. Those home games where we go a quarter or a half or even a game in the 51%-55% range (radio gives out the stats) and the oppo is close to the AFL average, that's when we usually play poorly and lose.

Nathan Bassett was pretty positive about Drew. Said he was the best of the debutantes.

Been trying to find the MRP results and who has taken over from Patrick Keane as AFL Media manager to see what Jonas got for that hit/bump in the guts to Gawn.

5AA just said $2,000 fine so must have been down from $3,000.

Jonas has to stop doing dumb shit.

Charges Laid:
Tom Jonas, Port Adelaide, has been charged with engaging in Rough Conduct against Max Gawn, Melbourne during the second quarter of the Round One match between Melbourne and Port Adelaide, played at the MCG on Saturday March 23.

In summary he can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Intentional Conduct with Low Impact to the Body. The incident was classified as a $3000 sanction. The player can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

My guess:

Ken Hinkley

5 Justin Westhoff
4 Travis Boak
3 Tom Rockliff
2 Jack Watts
1 Dan Houston

Simon Goodwin

5 Justin Westhoff
4 Tom Rockliff
3 Travis Boak
2 Scott Lycett
1 Christian Salem

There's no way in hell that Goodwin would acknowledge Jack Watts as being one of the best on ground, even though he was.

I've consistently stated that kick efficiency is directly related to uncontested possession. It's no surprise that we had a high uncontested possession count and our efficiency went up.

It comes from having players who have all bought into the system. It would never happen in a million years while Polec and Wingard were here, because all those two were concerned about was making sure that their personal numbers were good so they could get a fat paycheck.

I jotted down partway in the last quarter the stat that came up on screen and we scored from stoppages 6.3, turnover 6.6 and kick in's 0.1. So given we went from 12.10 to 12.15 and the stats Janus put up, it says the last 5 scoring shots came from turnovers.

I agree that's the majority of the situation, but over the past few years we have had games where we have just kicked like shit all quarter or most of a half, because they have been shit kicks that haven't hit targets when there was little pressure.

Getting those 2 poor kicks out of the team will help.
