2001 AFL Draft, How It Should Have Looked.

Come on people! Ablett and Bartel have both had more than 1 good season.

How can Hodge have had 3 "elite" seasons when he has only been AA once?

Oh so AA are the bees knees are they? You do realise they are picked by the same clowns who chose Mooney over Franklin and Dustin Fletcher in the team dont you

AA is an absolute joke these days...

I'm not going to ump my own players up. But Hodge has one great year. I have seen quite a few hawks games this year, and he was only good this year... by no means was he elite.

God, school holidays. How many weeks we gotta put up with this crap?

Being a Hawthorn supporter i think what doesnt go Hodges way is he can be Inconsistant from time to time, if he could gain some conisistancy i think this argument would be completeyl different, Bartel and Ablett have a Grand Final appearence to there names where is Hodgey doesnt, i put Bartel in 2nd place behind Judd becoz he has a Brownlow medal, so does that mean he is better??
I'd rather have Hodge than bartel or ablett but i'd also have Franklin over Johnathon Brown, Browns better, but i'd preferr Franklin and wouldn;t trade him for brown even if they were the same age.

The 2001 draft is history.

It's mildy interesting to marvel at the talent that was on offer, but 6 years on, it's water under the bridge. Players were selected according to the potential they showed at age 17.

The James Bartel we see today is almost as much a product of his six years developing in Geelong's system (under coaches like Thompson and McConnell) and playing with his current teammates as he is of genetics and early development.

Who knows how things would've fared had he been drafted by another team?

While we're at it, why don't we revisit the Thoroughbred yearling sales from 1999-2001 and shake our heads at the folks who paid six figure sums for well-bred horses that never won a race and ask why they didn't buy El Segundo or Makybe Diva?

Ignoring father-son rule, here's my top 15.

Chris Judd
Gary Ablett Jnr
Jimmy Bartel
Luke Hodge
Nick Dal Santo
Sam Mitchell
Luke Ball
Steve Johnson
Brian Harris
Campbell Brown
Dane Swan
Matt MacGuire
Jared Waite
Graham Polak
Ash Hansen

In another 2-3 years some of the KP's could be much higher though depending on how they develop.

Dont get me wrong, i love Bartel and Ablett, but one elite season to Hodge's 3 thus far?

Ablett and Bartel were only good players last year. Hodge was already a superstar..

And remember, Brownlow votes are a stupid arguement..

This is bollocks. You are basing your argument on a fallacy, therefore it isn't worth a pinch of shit.

To the people putting Luke Ball far down on there top 10 lists. He is a cripple who has been suffering far worse then any other player in that list. Injury free, he's better then Hodge and Bartel + he's the saints best midfielder. :)

Gary Ablett Jnr was a father/son selection. He was NEVER going anywhere but Geelong for heavens sakes. Because at the time they didn't have to give up a first round selection for him he should not be included in the "top 10" lists.

Exactly :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

This is purely opinion there all stars & anyone who says there overrated or no good are just being stupid because there all good but this is just my thoughts if eachplayer was 100% fit.
1.Judd
2.Hodge/ball, can't split them.
4.Bartel
5.Ablett
6.Mitchell
7. Dal Santo
8.Mcguire
9.Brown
10.S.Johnson

How could Ball possibly be above Bartel, Ablett, Mitchell, Dalsanto or even Steve Johnson ?

He's had one decent season and from memory he's had 4 BOG's in total in his 5 year career.

His ex Xavier schoolmate Jobe Watson is above him now and so are a hell a lot of others.

If you read my post it was if they were all 100% fit & in 04 & 05 Ball was an amazing footballer quite possibly the toughest going around if he got his fittness back he'll be an amazing player i thought at 1 stage that he would turn out to be the best player from that draft but injurys have ended that chance.

For me:

1. Chris Judd
Fair to say Judd stands alone at the top

2-4. Gary Ablett Jnr, Jimmy Bartel, Luke Hodge

Pretty hard to split I would take Bartel at 2 for his durability but the others are more match winners. If I were Westcoast 2006 I would take Bartel. If I were Sydney 2006 I would take Ablett, If I were Adelaide probably Hodge.

5-6. Nick Dal Santo, Sam Mitchell

Again hard to split, clearance machine vs silk. Depends what your team needs.

7. Brian Harris

Probably the 4th best FB in the league and rapidly improving. Could very well end up in the top 5.

8. Luke Ball
Crippled by injury pulls him down from being somewhere between 2-6.

9. Steve Johnson
Kid has always had buckets of talent, starting to show it.

10-11. Campbell Brown, Dane Swan

Have become good players through hard work but don't have the talent the above players have.

12-14. Matt MacGuire, Jared Waite, Graham Polak
Shown signs but still lack consistency.

15. Ash Hansen
Improving but I don't rate him that highly.

Hodge turned the game against Adelaide in that final. Forget Buddy, we were getting murdered in the middle, and he runs out on 1 leg and dominated all over the ground. Most of you would have seen it. I'd seen enough that day to tell me he was elite. 2 weeks prior he got 35 touches and 6 goals against the Dogs. 15 touches in the 3rd qtr to set up the murder. Was a cut above anyone else on the ground.

I'm not going to put fwd a comparison with the other 3 at the risk of bias, but they are all elite for mine.

I'm rapt we've got Hodge, and will prove to be a fine leader of the club for years to come...

Who cares if he's tough ?
By that logic, Brett Kirk is the best player in the league.

The fact is that he is just a good average footballer with a ton of courage.

Not when he was at his best he wasn't. He was a every bit the equal of Hodge at the time and a fair bit in front of the others being mentioned (Judd excluded of course).

You are allowing the injuries to cloud your view, which considering it has been two seasons is understandable.

ball gets rattled with injury and falls completely out of favour with the fans.

hodge manages to get more control over injury issues, and is suddenly loved by all, when before he was criticised.

both are guns, ball is completely underrated now. he will come back strong.

this draft year was absolutely ridiculous though

To be quite honest, I couldn't really see what all the fuss was about when he did have his 'two good seasons.'

People confuse courage with skill and the media fell in love with him.

No question that he is super courageous but his disposal has always been average at best, he has no real tricks that make him stand out and he has never been able to turn a game on his own.

How many Brownlow Medallists will this draft produce???

Judd
Bartel
Hodge
Ablett Jnr
Dal Santo?
Mitchell??
Swan??
