What has given you that impression? Seems like a strange move.

He spent some time forward this season. Not a lot, just short spells.

When we got something approaching a deep midfield this season (about rounds 10-15) Redden spent a little time forward. With a deep midfield next season I'm expecting that time to increase. I'd imagine Beams, Rocky and Aish will move forward occasionally as well.

Any deal with Jaksch won’t involve Mitch Robinson or Jeff Garlett, with the Giants not interested and having to downsize their list. But the Blues are confident it can strike deals elsewhere for both of those players, whose off-field behaviour has put them on the trade table. Garlett met with Essendon this week and has also attracted interest from Melbourne. Robinson is still in the frame at the Brisbane Lions. Out-of-favour midfielder Kane Lucas, the No.12 pick in 2009, has been told he can leave if the Blues can be satisfied with a rival club offer. He is out of contract.

I was always very underwhelmed by Kane Lucas...IIRC, he was part of the compensation we gave up for Fevola along with Henderson. Carlton must be spewing they passed up Lewis Jetta. As for Robinson, still a massive no from me.

I don't think Carlton mind overlooking Jetta. The search for him would have used too many resources ;)

I expect 'if satisfied with a rival offer' is a PR line. I don't see anyone giving up more than a late third-rounder for Lucas.

I reckon Carlton have done okay if they're getting Jones for pick 43 and Tutt for pick 62.

Let's see where we end up at the end of the trade period, but right now it's nice to be on the top of one ladder.

There is still plenty to gain for all 18 clubs if they are up for the fight. But who could benefit the most? We rank the teams from 1-18 with the top-ranked team potentially having most to gain from the free agency and trade period.

1. Brisbane Lions

For all the exploits of Clark, Frawley, Jarrad Waite and Paddy Ryder, the youngest star who appears likely to move is Dayne Beams, and his most likely destination is the Lions. If Beams moves to the Gabba, Justin Leppitsch will suddenly have an incredible collection of midfield talent - Tom Rockliff, Jack Redden, Daniel Rich, Beams, Pearce Hanley, as well as youngsters James Aish, Nick Robertson and Lewis Taylor. It is the kind of crop upon which a club can build for a sustained finals tilt.

Pretty decent company in that top four, too...

I think a Merrett/Watts direct swap would be mutually advantageous. Watts is a gun, and he would benefit from leaving the Demons/Melbourne/No. 1 draft pick spotlight; I think he's developed as much as possible under the Demons. I think he'd do well in Leppa's Lions' family environment. Thoughts?

It's a shame there is 0 chance that Melbourne would even entertain a straight swap.

If we don't Draft anyone outside F/S & Academy kids.... Then Jonathon Brown hit the nail on the head with his comments yesterday "Brisbane is a club moving forward & better players around the league, like dayne beams, will want to come to our club"

That would be a massive tick for the club not having to select young talent outside of Queensland.

PLEASE NOTE: summarised quote lol

I do feel like our List Management guys dodged a bullet in dealing with Essendon for Ryder, looks like it might last a while. Dons are probably glad they are dealing with a club that needs Ryder rather than having him as a nice to have like we did. Their bargaining position is strengthened, especially as Paddy can now no longer play the getting home to wife's family card. Might be a long drawn out process.

Dons reject Port offer for Ryder
ESSENDON has rejected Port Adelaide's first selection in the NAB AFL Draft in exchange for disgruntled ruckman Paddy Ryder.

The Power offered pick No.16 for Ryder, who has nominated Port as his preferred new home, but the Dons have knocked back the deal.

Speaking on SEN radio on Friday, Port's list manager Jason Cripps said a resolution could be some way off.

Academy nominations will be interesting today.

Do we leave a guy or two we are interested in off the nominations so we can go into trade week with some flexibility with our picks, or do we just go in no nonsense and nominate all the guys we want.

JB makes a valid point. Whilst we might need a defender or 2 and a forward or two, it will be easier to attract those types with a killer midfield.

I think being on the end of Daniel Rich bullet passes has to be appealing for key forwards.
