They both joined us in the same year too, didn't they?Greenwood at least already had a 2 year contract so 1 more year.

I'd say they both have a year to go.

Nope. Rookie Upgrades had to be nominated in today's List Lodgement. O'Brien is our only rookie upgrade for 2016.
Interestingly, the media release mentions contract extensions for Beech & Hunter. No mention is made of Greenwood & Keath. I would have expected both to receive 12-month extensions. I'm not sure why this hasn't happened yet, or (if it has) why it wasn't mentioned in the release.
An unpleasant but fair questionSomething that bothers me is are we just going to continue to be a care home for Sam Shaw next year?
I know that the club are probably thinking that by supporting him they maybe avoid some disharmony from the important players he's close friends with or they just want to avoid a payout and are quite happy promoting a rookie in his spot, whatever the reason the bloke's just taking up a space on the list

We just dumped Henderson, who was best for us in our last minor round game ......and whose wedding just 2 weeks ago all the players attendedSomething that bothers me is are we just going to continue to be a care home for Sam Shaw next year?

And you think, on the back of this, somehow are showing another player a soft approach by suggesting we're a care home![]()
The club would have made the call to retain Shaw based on medical opinion .....not on supporters views from no position of knowledge on the situationHenderson wasn't in a health battle, I liked Shaw as a player but enough is surely enough his continued battles to just get through a couple of SANFL games is just becoming sad
I doubt that there's any "disharmony" issues. It's more likely to be a combination of salary cap issues (i.e. not wanting to include his 2017 salary in the 2016 cap) and the flexibility it gives us with promoting a rookie if/when required.Something that bothers me is are we just going to continue to be a care home for Sam Shaw next year?

Not the club's call to make. Shaw has a contract for 2017, so it was always going to be his call (based on medical opinion) whether or not to retire. The club would have made the call to retain Shaw based on medical opinion .....not on supporters views from no position of knowledge on the situation
Yes of course it's all the players call ......as i said b4, it was also Bartels call to retire after triggering an extra yearNot the club's call to make. Shaw has a contract for 2017, so it was always going to be his call (based on medical opinion) whether or not to retire.

Surely the salary cap issue couldn't be much of an issue if we were willing to make a play at Gibbs.I doubt that there's any "disharmony" issues. Otten no different really.Giving Shaw a two year deal last year was bordering on imbecilic given his injury history.
Huh? .....you do realise that since his hamstring surgery, he's had ZERO repercussions ......it's only the concussions that are in play now, and if the club medico's have cleared him, there's absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be on the list or playingLook his health is exactly that HIS, I just stated that in a cut-throat industry no matter if you like him as a player you can't continue carrying someone who due to unfortunate circumstances is unable to provide any service and it is of a high chance considering his past of happening again, his manager deserves the plaudits for getting the club to give him a 2 year deal (which I didn't have a problem with 12 months ago, but 12 months is a long time in football). Like Vader said they couldn't afford to pay him out this year, it's looking to be yet another pretty poor list management decision
The list managers & coaches must see something in him, because they keep giving him new contracts. He's had 7 years on the list, and played just 24 AFL games in that period. They could have given him a "dead man walking" contract, like Grigg, last year - but they chose to give him 2 years. That's a long time for such a slim return.Early this year Sam Shaw was close to senior selection. His hamstrings were fine, his kicking had improved and he was showing a good combination of offensive and defensive skills. The concussions screwed his season but he is not 32 years old, he is 25.
I doubt whether many teams would pick up Sam if he was a delisted free agent but he is a free hit for us. We are committed to his salary this year and the profile of our primary list is going to be very young. The alternative is to spend extra money picking up a DFA or use a very late pick in the draft.
I think he is a long shot to play a 100+ game career but "I'm telling you, he's a chance".
I'm a Shaw fan but this is 100% correct…same with Otten.Giving Shaw a two year deal last year was bordering on imbecilic given his injury history.
We have 6x senior list vacancies (Grigg, Henderson, Jaensch, VB, Lowden, Lyons).
We can have 4x draftees, ROB upgraded, PLUS a DFA (Barlow).
Where are you getting six spots from? The club confirming that O'Brien will be upgraded doesn't mean it happens automatically; he still needs to be drafted in the National Draft in order to become a permanent member of the senior list.
Is he related to stewey dew?Don't underestimate the power that Spangher can have to a team.
- Drafted by WCE in 2006, they win a grand final.
- Goes to Sydney in 2011, they win a grand final in 2012.
- Goes to Hawthorn in 2013 and they win the next 3 grand finals.
Might just be the missing ingredient!
Rookie upgrades no longer require the use of a national draft pick. O'Brien has been upgraded. He is already on our senior list. We have five free spots.
