List Mgmt. 2018 Draft Prospects aka the West and Khamis thread

Remove this Banner Ad

What do people know about Jye Caldwell and Xavier Duursma? What is their draft range and play style? I've heard mostly good things about both.

I've been super impressed with Caldwell from the little I've seen of him and I have him in contention for pick 7. His burst speed, power and ball winning around the stoppages make him an appealing prospect as is his ability to impact forward. Those hamstring injuries are a worry though.

This is a good write up on him (from afldraftcentral.com.au).

DRAFT ANALYSIS: “A special talent who can play on the inside, burn his opponents on the outside or go forward and wreak havoc up there."

OVERVIEW

The forgotten man of the 2018 draft crop is a special talent who has very few deficiencies in his game. Jye Caldwell is a player who can go inside, spread to the outside or play up forward and still have an impact. Athletically, Caldwell is very similar to recently retired Bulldog Clay Smith at the same age, and has that fierce attack on the ball and ability to hit the scoreboard similar to Smith. Caldwell unfortunately has not had luck on his side this year, with injuries restricting him to just three TAC Cup games and one National Under 18s Championships game, as well as missing games through playing for his school, Geelong Grammar. Recruiters are aware he is a super athlete so how much he tests at the upcoming National Draft Combine is unlikely to affect his draft prospects, with the pocket rocket likely to land somewhere inside the top 30.

STRENGTHS

  • Acceleration
  • Agility
  • Goal sense
  • Game smarts
  • Tackling
  • Leadership
Caldwell has a lightning burst over 20m, recording one of the highest 20m sprints (2.983 seconds) of the TAC Cup, while also impressing with his agility score of 8.175 seconds. His ability to weave his way through traffic or burst out of a stoppage is imminent, and it is something the Pioneers, and Vic Country would have loved to have had available all year. To complete his top performance in the pre-season testing, Caldwell also tested in the top group for the Yo-yo test, recording 21.2. It is hard to read too much into his 2018 year, with injury wiping out most of it, but he had an impressive 24 disposals, seven tackles and a goal earlier in the season.

Caldwell has the goal sense to play down forward and create something out of nothing. He can use his class to pick up a loose ball and cleverly snap around his body, or he can work his opponent under the ball and use his smarts to win the football and hurt opponents that way. His defensive attitude is as impressive as his offensive capabilities, laying fierce tackles and putting defensive pressure on the ball carrier. Finally, his ability to win the ball on the inside or outside is a huge positive for any AFL club looking at him, while his leadership traits saw him earn co-captain of Vic Country with Sam Walsh.

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Durability
  • Kicking consistency
Given Caldwell has had limited matches in his top-age year, and the clear improvement is just getting on the park and getting minutes into his legs. He has a really strong base from which to work with heading into an AFL club, and has just been unlucky with injuries. Given the amount of time he has lost, the AFL club that picks him will likely monitor him over the pre-season and make sure to the best of their ability that the hamstring injuries he has sustained do not reoccur. The second improvement worth noting is his kicking consistency. He can look unbelievable on some days, and less effective on others, sometimes missing targets through overhitting his kicks, but when on his game, his skills are impressive.

DRAFT PROJECTION: First-second round

SUMMARY

Caldwell is a well-balanced prospect who has a good combination of skills, smarts and athleticism that make him an exciting player. The fact he received a National AFL Draft Combine invitation despite playing very few games is testament to his ability and how highly clubs rate him. Chances are his injuries might have knocked him back a peg in the pecking order, but expect him to still be in the early stages of the draft, with a second round, or if a club pounces in the late first round, as his draft projection. He is one of those players that could end up top 10 on pure talent, and has very few deficiencies in his game, so there should be no shortage of clubs who would consider Caldwell in the early part of the draft.

Yeah he's the one I've got no idea on. Some love him, and he could be a bargain because of the injuries. Sounds fragile though.

For those who say we are bland and need some x-factor it looks like he could be a good acquisition. Some rare skills and burst speed might improve the faltering i50 entries we've had in the last year or so.

Might be worth a risk but it doesn't look like we'll have a suitable pick available. That could change if Wallis doesn't re-sign though.

We'd also have to back ourselves in to manage the hamstring susceptibility.

Duursma is quite similar in a lot of ways just lighter, there is gold picks 10 to 25 gold I tells ya.
If we do lose a few mids this year it would be nice to take a pick in this range and still take West. West already an upgrade on Dahlhaus IMO. Any trades would change everything of course. Caldwell sounds good but he's already making me draw comparisons to Nathan Freeman.

Nathan Freeman or our own Josh Prudden of the perpetually injured squad it is a shame really as his best is very appealing. He is a bit more
dour and inside, but I think Luke Valente will be the first too 200 games injury permitting and he did win the SA MVP at the champs in the
same team as the highly rated more flashy types.

Persistent hamstring injuries at a young age is almost as bad as doing an ACL imo. The two injuries that ruin careers. Valente is a good ball user too if I remember correctly. Seems like a fairly low risk pick, the type that will go around the pick 15 mark.

Hearing whispers that Rhylee and Buku will tell other clubs to not nominate them

Why would they risk draft tampering charges when they’re guaranteed to get to us anyway, and why would the other clubs care what they say?

Telling them they want to play for the dogs isn't draft tampering. And why would you draft someone that doesn't want to play for you. The real risk for them would be if we don't draft them, then they'd be screwed if they took that approach.

Every season tons of kids tell clubs to not consider them due to other offers/interest

Nothing new

You'd think everyone would be well aware that West is going to the Dogs but just perhaps want to speak with him, hardly think such a stance in required, surprised that Khemis would be saying the same.

Hopefully no club that finished above us trades their way ahead of us, or GC use one of their picks to nominate West cos I can see a ******* bid happening before our pick (if not traded away for Wingard etc, that is)

I suspect clubs will bid on our players at some point but not too high in case we actually don't match and they end up having to take them. Clubs will want to see us pay fair value for them rather than them slipping to later in the draft.
