Papley is not unhappy in Sydney. There are two reasons for his wanting to play in Melbourne. One is a family illness. He would prefer to be closer to home in case something happens. This is understandable. Secondly his girlfriend works/lives in Melbourne. Maintaining long distance relationships can be incredibly difficult and distance can place a strain on a relationship. So they are both very valid and sensible reasons to seek to live in Melbourne. But to say he is unhappy at Sydney is just incorrect. In fact all evidence would say otherwise. He is happy, enjoys the company of the boys and loves playing for the Swans. But other forces are at play due to those other two factors.

...and a third one being the coin being offerred.

Why even offer that?
Because it's clear Essendon won't take it anyway and Daniher can't conclude we didn't make a genuine attempt, therefore we are more likely to get him for peanuts next season. Pick 5 is not a high price to pay for a quality KPF especially as Buddy ages out.

In the trade period hopefully the small trades can get done early. Jones to Saints and Cameron to Collingwood. Then we can concentrate on the two major ones. There might be some stuff around Knight and Taylor, one or both in or neither, but that is minor stuff. Leaving plenty of tes for thr major trades is the secret. Eagles left the Kelly negotiations too late last year. So we need to deal with the easier trades quickly to leave plenty of time for the hard ones.

I think we are agreed. Joe should stay and everyone is happy (except Joe, the poor dear).
He should play out his contract and actually get on the field and get a kick, to demonstrate he is worth $800k a year, whether it be from the Swans via a trade, or from Essendon via a contract renewal.
And forget getting him for free via DFA. Essendon only have to match to scuttle that.
Absolutely correct. The thing with that is, they have so far not offered him an extended contract when he asked for one. So between that and (probably fictional reports he's unhappy with his rehab) a now stated decision to leave mellbourne why would he change his mind? Possibly he plays next year, has a great or ok year and thinks stuff it, they didn't back me in i'm not accepting anything thus forcing a trade where his value for a contract will be higher after a better season, but essendons leverage is reduced again.

It would not be if the player had a clean bill of health. But this bloke does not have that. He has Osteitis Pubis. I some people this injury never heals. Gerrard Healy explained the pitfalls of this injury in a session 'On The Couch' did on some of the major injuries. Healy is qualified as a physiotherapist explained that some people who get Osteitis Pubis never fully recover and even though the symptoms go in time they always relapse. I'm not saying this is happening to Joe but there is always this possibility and the medical staff would be very clear in their intent to examine all medical records and send him to a top specialist in Sydney to make sure the problem is gone.

In the current circumstance, where he might still need recovery time, his value decreases. But Essendon will want full tote odds for him. Dodoro always plays hardball, a reason they have missed out on some good players or players have been stranded at Essendon. I would not pay more than one first round pick for him. But that is me. If he recovers well from Osteitis he will be a top player. An ex All Australian, a star when on his game.

This is probably going to be the most interesting negotiation in the trade period. I think the Kelly deal will get done this time very easily as he does not have a current contract and does not want to pay for the Cats.

Is this typical of the Swans to publicly state which players from other clubs they are in discussion with?

The Sydney Swans have shown some interest in Brisbane Lions forward Lewis Taylor and Adelaide Crows midfielder Riley Knight.
...
Taylor has played 112 games for Brisbane since making his debut in 2014, winning the AFL Rising Star award in his first season.
Knight is a versatile midfielder with high endurance levels who has played 54 games for the Crows over the last five seasons.
CEO Tom Harley said both players were on the Swans radar entering the player exchange period.
“There is definitely an interest, we have had conversations with both Lewis and Riley,” Harley said.

If your rucks are getting slaughtered and don't hit to advantage when they do get a tap the mids are starting a long way back. If it was the Stall Gift they would be on a 20 metre penalty. Our mids had to battle under very tough conditions last season. They did pretty well considering.

Sorry to interject, but being born in Stawell I just had to pull you up on the spelling.......... Otherwise, carry on!

Lloyd: Tom, you’re a liar
Harley: Lloydie, I respect your views
Lloyd: BUT YOU ARE A LIAR
Harley: Lloydie, I respect your views
Lloyd: LIAR!!!!!

And so it went on for the entire interview.
Journalism at its pathetic worst.

Oh dear...

Matthew Lloyd should be nowhere near a microphone, as same goes for Tim Watson. Tim Watson is very funny, a week ago Joe was a very very good player and must keep, this morning he is a broken down FF with a limited future. These Essendon boys do get salty very quickly. The bias reporting in the comparative interviews.

This article was their own interview and the headline was not even said. Dodoro was was asked a general question regarding to talking to contracted players not Harley directly.

It is soooooo boorish....

Essendon are quietly pleased me thinks.

To be honest though does Harley think we are idiots?
no, he clearly thinks the "journo's" he is talking to are...and largely hard to argue.

Dodoro would be negligent if he didn't open negotiations asking for Heeney or Blakey. I don't know why people are so up in arms about the Bombers playing hardball publicly.
That's an ambit claim similar to us offering a third round pick for Daniher. Henney and Blakey are miles better than Daniher. They need to be realistic.

Here’s a bit of fun.
SEN page has article about Dons complaining about Harley. #outragefortheages. And article right underneath it...
Saints keeping close contact with Kings management trying to prise him out of the Suns.
and Saints can do that...but the kid hasn’t even seen out his 2nd year yet but that’s okay folks nothing to see here cause Vic clubs are saving them.

No discussions with Shiel prior to the trade period last year (was contracted)?

Stringer was contracted too.

Harley didn’t do anything other clubs don’t do so good on him

shoe on other foot I’m sure people would blast an essendon ceo meeting one of our players then requesting a trade months later

it’s just boring radio

ok he probably lied he might be being honest

who cares

Harley is there to look after the swans , like Eddie pushes the pie agenda etc

good on you Tom I say even if you begged Daniher over coffee so what
