But do you really want someone who wants to leave anyway ?? Chances are he won't sign

It's a bit of a who cares one, you have them contracted, you hold all the cards next year.

The worst-case scenario is if Martin sits out, but, well he's contracted so it's not exactly going to do any good for him either.

AFL has gifted them with the ability to get 10 rookies so if he does not want to play so be it, end of the day they are making a stand,
Carlton and Martin cannot be allowed to get away with this.
Also if they select him then Carlton has to trade again next year

Once you're at the back end of the draft, you are better off using rookie picks then senior ones. After all, they're cheaper and it's a one year contract instead of two.
Oh sure, I'm just saying that there's a line or balancing act. You get to pick X in the draft, if you've got to the end of the list of players you fancy, then you start passing and elevating rookies to whatever extent you want or need to fill spots in the senior list. But if there is a player you fancy, no matter how late the pick ("we couldn't believe he was still there at pick X") - unless of course you're confident he will slide to the RD. Overall I think we'll probably want to use maybe 4-5 picks plus maybe 2-3 rookie elevations and a corresponding number of picks in the rookie draft?

- This may well be inconsistent with what I have said earlier in this thread :p

Martin is a free agent next year, so worst case scenario is he sits out the year and Gold Coast get the compensation pick.

But to qualify for free agency next year would mean he would have to nominate a 1 year contract for his PSD. I'd expect a multi year deal nominated that would stuff him more if picked back by GC.

I'd back Gold Coast to either recontract Martin, or pick him up in the national draft, or pick him up in the PSD, with GC having better picks in each.

Their CEO I believe said they'd do this in an interview. Even saying there was no dollar value they wouldn't be able to accommodate with shuffling
Talk is that Martin will put a massive 7 figure amount on a single year deal to price the Suns out since they have cap issues and to scare Melbourne away. He'd then immediately sign another extension at the Blues with the correct money to even the whole thing out.

How on earth do the suns have cap issues?

It's not that hard. Similar to how we were at full cap despite having no stars on our list.

Non-VFL clubs that aren't winning have to overpay even to retain average players, let alone gun prospects.

Surely this, combined with the refusal to play for anyone other than Carlton, constitutes draft tampering. Brett Chalmers got 12 months for similar behaviour. AFL need to stamp this s**t out.

If we did that we would get Tippett like sanctions. Never change AFL, never change.

Think you will find that Gold Coast have more room in there Cap than Carlton will,
GC could be on a win-win if Martin decides to put a high-value short term offer in the PSD, They select him, Martin refuses to play so they pay peanuts, and in 2020 when Carlton put up a good Offer for a restricted Free agent, GC garner a Level 1 comp pick which could be pick 2 in the national draft,

Would that even pass a sniff test, let alone the AFL contract review? Yeah, prolly would

See Rankine and Ben King deals as examples. I think Martin is on 600k ++

If Martin is on 600k ++ then it would only be about finding an extra couple of hundred K, which for a club that should at least have the flexibility of being able to go into the 103-104% cap spend, it should be doable.

You'd find that by overpaying the youth, their undercutting the average senior players in preparation to move them on. After all, you don't try to retain average.

Any talk of Gold Coast and being close to the cap spend is fanciful at best, even with them paying kids bigger money to retain them. You've got to get to 95% somehow.

$11.5m doesn't go very far these days.
