Why would Essendon do us any favours and not bid on McInness?
No club bids on players they don't want -especially if it is a top 10 pick.
Pick 9 from Adelaide would be soaked up on matching the Essendon bid -doesn't aid our cause.

We need to forget about where our first might land next year (even if it’s a top 10 pick) and make it work for us this year. Like Dogs with JUH this year our first in 2021 will be consumed in matching wherever it lands.

I know it's all just guesswork at this stage, but it's possible that Essendon take Cox, Reid and Reef with 6, 7 and 8.
They have no key forwards and only ageing key defenders.

Pie 4 Life it was interesting watching your work in the phantom. I think you did well but to me it illustrates how poor our draft hand is and how vulnerable we are if Reef gets bid on early. It makes me angry to think on what we gave up and yet still haven't improved our draft position. I think we need to do something with next years 1st to better position ourselves. How would you look to improve our draft hand if you were in Neds position?

Fair enough. It will depend on where Derek Hine and crew rate Reef compared to the other draftees.

Probably because he’s probably not worth a top 10 pick. They already got burned by trying to dummy bid on Mosquito and the Hawks didn’t match. Particularly if we had pick 9, they’d have to be certain that we would 100% match or they risk losing the kid that they really want. We could quite easily pass if we had pick 9 and a tall like Reid or Cox is still on the board, and then get a Macrae type at our next pick. As much as we want Reef, a tall + mid at 16 is a far better outcome than Reef, (who looks to have the tools but is very much speculative as a mid) and another mid.

And what did the dogs end up doing? They essentially traded pick 14 for some extra points. It’s not like waiting gave them good value.

If they bid that early then they can have him imo - plenty of talent will be there at pick 11-12.

I'd only be matching a bid for Reef if we can use our first two first round picks as live picks - ie. a bid for him comes after our second pick has been used, assuming that we trade our future first for another 2020 first round pick.

The absolute ideal outcome for us is still using our three first round picks over 2020-21 as live picks plus matching bids on Reef and Daicos, so if an early bid on Reef comes inside the first 10 picks this year then we should absolutely pass imo.

But the 4 yellows at the top couldn't surely mean they rate 4 Western Australians in the top 4?

If we are that cincerned, target one of their picks. They won't bid on him if they only have 2 top 10 picks and risk losing out on players that are higher ranked.

I know you just never know with Dodoro, but I wouldn't think he would be that stupid.

Maybe. But I just don't see it. Twomey usually is pretty spot on with his rankings for the top 10 especially. He doesn't have him anywhere near that.

Looking at the top 25, Campbell, Jones should get bids from other clubs before Reef. Add in Braun, Cox, Reid, Perkins, macrae, Phillips...

No way would any club have Reef before these guys.

IF the draft went our way and we were able to get 2 picks in before a Reef bid I wouldn’t be totally against holding it. Maybe then use a future 2nd to get Suns 27 this year for Reef.

I’d then try and trade the 2021 first (once it’s value is known) next off season in a player/RFA match trade.

Well you have to look at it 2 ways:

1: What can he now
2: What will he Develop into.

I don't see Reef as Top 10 Pick right now but Could with his Upside

You pick kids based solely on their upside in the late first round or early second round at earliest. Top 10 picks should be reserved for kids who have the highest chance of making it. If you don’t think he’s in the top 10 best kids based on both output and potential then you don’t pick him. Pretty simple.

Well with Covid there would not be many Top 10 Guratee Immediate Impact as Cox or Reid no Gurantee to make a Impact in 2021
