Hands up who thought the Saints and Blues would be undefeated and sitting on top of the AFL ladder at the end of any round, let alone multiple rounds into the season? Ok, you can put your hands down, no one believes your lies.

In scenes that have conspiracy theorists rechecking their stocks of potable water, here is the ladder at the end of Round 4.

This shapes as the most important clash between these two sides since the 1996 Preseason Cup. On that auspicious occasion, the Saints prevailed by a lot, the Blues winning the following year, both teams failing to make the finals altogether after their triumph. Thankfully, both teams now seem aware that the winning of preseason matches is less important than those matches held in-season.

Players to watch:

Saints

Wanganeen-Milera: Silky skills with improved endurance sees him rated highly for Kicks, Marks and metres gained this season. The Saints overlap running starts in defence and this guy will only get better as the team masters the new look Ross Lyon game plan.

Stocker: For some reason Stocker never quite made the step up at the Blues, looks very settled in defence for the Saints. Hard at the ball, good in close and above average disposal, despite biting off more than he can chew occasionally, Stocker may struggle to hold his spot once the full squad is available, not losing any friends with his current output.

Blues

Motlop: The most likely to make it as a dangerous small forward, this kid reads the play well and gets into the right spots. About to break out in a big way. Loves a tackle, second efforts are a joy to watch. Needs to find a way to contribute across 4 quarters, can be hard to do in a forward line even without two of the best contested tall forwards in the league. Limited opportunities haven’t affected his output yet, once he is identified as the one to stop, things will get more interesting.

Hewitt: If you are going to tag anyone in the Blues midfield, Hewitt rates a long way behind the obvious targets in Cripps and Walsh. Like Duncan did for the Cats in the era of Selwood, Ablett and Dangerfield hunting the ball, Hewitt goes about his business free of expectation and under the radar, teams are missing the glue that holds the attacking parts together. Not winning the accolades of the great unwashed and uneducated, reckon his teammates prefer when he is out there and in form.

Both coaches have resurrected their careers after being less than successful at their last effort, both seem to have learned from their time away from the top job. Saints fans will be loving how Ross Lyon has discovered the benefits of attacking football, as well as keeping the best bits of the defensive side. Blues fans are appreciating the Michael Voss insistence on two way running from the entire team and the unrelenting attack on the ball that sometimes went missing for large parts of games in previous seasons.

Both sides are building belief and the sky is the limit ... until one is dealt a harsh reality check at the end of this clash.

Prediction: Blues by 8 points

Out: Plowman, Honey, Pittonet, (injured) E Curnow (Managed)

In for speed: McGovern, Binns, Ramshaw, Leiu

Oh well you could only hope.

Out: Plowman, Honey, Pittonet, (injured)

I knew Adelaide would win realistically McGovern in if fit the next 2 depends on VFL performance Binns and Carroll hopefully can take next step or likely O'Brien and Martin long shot Dow.

I feel the need, the need for speed. Out slugs, in terms of leg speed and particularly ball movement.

Need big games in the twos from Kemp, Binns, Carroll and Cincotta to give some options Not promoting Dow, but he must feel hard done by when the blokes he can’t get past because of his deficiencies are just as bad.

Never been a big fan of Gov, but Sh1t we need his dare by foot exiting D50.

Honestly think we will win this. Saints defensive structure means that they only allow kicks along the boundary and bombs inside 50. Those are the only things we do anyway so they aren't really nullifying us at all.

B: Saad Weits Gov
HB: Cincotta Young Newy
C: Acres Crippa Cerra
HF: Kemp Harry Durdin
F: Jack Charles Mots

Foll: TDK Walsh Kennedy

IC: Hewitt, Cowan, Hollands, Fisher (lucky)

Out: Plow, Honey, Pitt, Ed (stiff.

In: Kemp, Cincotta, Gov

What I want to happen:

Out: Fisher, Plowman, Ed Curnow, Hewett, Pittonet, Honey (sub)
In: McGovern, Dow, Binns, Cincotta, Kemp

Newman Weitering Kemp
Saad, Young, McGovern
Acres Kennedy Hollands
Binns McKay Cincotta
Durdin C Curnow Motlop
De Koning Silvagni Walsh
Int: Cerra Dow Cripps Binns

Sub: Carroll

I'd rather Kennedy, Silvagni, Dow and Walsh as my main stoppage attendees at the moment. Hewett is horribly out of form and Cripps just isn't himself. God forbid we get told about some injury one or both are carrying. Silvagni reads the ball and applies pressure. He's also incredibly poised and smart in the middle of the ground. Again, people say that Dow has been tried and tested but could he do any worse than what we saw tonight?

Cincotta can rotate front and back with Cowan. Both are hard at it and like to tackle.

Silvagni can take some of the ruck duties whilst playing as a ruck rover. Owies back in if he is ready, simply because he knows how to find the ball in the forward 50. Honey and Fisher don't.

What will happen:

Out: Plowman, Honey (Sub)
In: McGovern, O'Brien (Sub)

Would love to see Binns get a go. Need to fast track his development as his running power, effort and kicking are exactly what we lack.
Not sure how kicking is anything to write home about , but happy to get a look at him this season.

I’ve given up picking the team.

Who knows who will be injured either days or minutes out from the game.

Also, Martin not playing VFL. Could be injury, or they don’t want to risk him at VFL level. (Which would be madness if true, because how else does he get match fit).

Owies is round 8

Plow and Honey out for Cincotta and Gov.
Kemp in for Pitt if he misses.
If gov and Pittonet miss then just pick the best performed VFL player because none are going to be what we need anyway.
Unfortunetly you can't pick best VFL performed player it be good if you could have up to 10 top up players for the season.
