List Mgmt. 2026 Draft and Trade Thread

Because it costs money to run a club and more money is usually considered a positive thing. So if you are being paid money to do something that then increases how much money you have to run the club.

Remember money can be exchanged for goods and services.

It does nothing to help us one bit, clubs are here for one thing in the end-to win. You need access at the top end. The two pick rule fixes nearly everything. Clubs now have to make calls whether they pay market price. You can always pass like we did with Carmichael

With Hetherton out for the season, a question for the knowledgeable here in regards to the mid season draft. If the club chose to pick someone in that draft to replace him, with Hetherton being a cat. B rookie, would his replacement have to be eligible under the normal cat B criteria? Or it could just be anyone on the list of nominees for the MSD?

Apparently only one set of comp picks will be awarded so they won’t get it twice this year with Walker and Cochrane.

These will be awarded at the start of night 2 so cannot be used for matching bids on night 1.
Makes sense that they are awarded post the night being done as there was a timing issue if they were awarded immediately after the first match.

E.g. If the latter approach was used Carlton would pre-arrange a trade with a team prior to the draft say #4 for like #10 + #14, covering a bid for Walker at #2 but then getting access to the extra pick.

Imo I think that the AFL will most likely view Carlton #4 as voided for the application of the extra pick rule given it will be used to match on Walker.

Carlton will still get it assuming Cochrane is bid on first and that is fairly likely, if the Tigers are smart they’d do Cochrane at pick 1 anyway. If Walker is bid on first it will be interesting to see if they qualify you’d surely be right that their pick 4 has been used

An absolute disgrace.

Remove the discount fine, but to have to then pay EXTRA is a disgrace.

I’m fine with it- this is what happens when Brisbane and GC take the Mickey out of the system they weren’t the only ones but they were the big two.

It’s meant to be ultra hard to match at the top tier, and a side in a GF doesn’t NEED a top 5 talented kid anyway.

Brisbane killed the goose i knew they would

Academy pays the price for F/S

Yep and Gold Coast just put the icing on the cake so to speak. It forced the AFL to do something.

The AFL shot themselves in the foot when they removed the top 8 northern academy matching rule. If it was still in place last year, Gold Coast wouldn't have been able to draft one of Patterson, Addinsall, or Jai Murray as they would have only been able to take Uwland and one other.

I liked the idea that was mooted of one first round selection per draft max but I’m not against this new system think it is very fair anyway

It seems like none of the AFL Executive or Commission have ever played The Beer Game (aka the first lesson you might typically experience in a course on systems thinking).

Fair! This system is a f**king circus

It’s an improvement on last season. Let’s see how it works. Let’s hope they have got it right this time so we aren’t changing it again that’s my only hope. Does this mean it’s perfect no, no system is unfortunately

Everyone knows my thoughts on it. About time for mine. Clubs will have plenty of ability to match but you will have to make some calls if you have 2,3,4 + top tier talents in the same draft period.

The discount stays in so that’s the compromise for clubs that don’t make finals

You'll have to make a call if you even have 1 top tier talent. Two picks and a levy on top - it's a wipe out and debt if you're in the GF and have a top 5 pick

It’s meant to be ultra hard to match talents in the top 5. Anything is better than last years situation so let’s see how this one works. It’s not likely the tax thing comes in any time soon anyway

Its more compromised than ever. Its more complex, confusing and open to manipulation than ever
It comes down to dumb luck. If your dad played then you're rewarded (Romantic? no, its vomit material), If your mum or dad was born overseas and you live where junior football is strong (ie, not NSW or QLD) then you're rewarded. However if you encourage juniors from other sports to play Aussie rules, and develop them into AFL players then you're punished.
Lukeparkerno1, you clearly have zero appreciation of the footy world outside of victoria. There are 15 odd players on AFL lists from the Swans Academy that wouldn't be playing AFL if not for the Academy (Heeney, Mills, Gulden, Campbell, Wicks, Edwards, Kyle, King, Charmicael(dogs), Anderson & Cochrane(pies), McAndrew(crows), Blakey, Cleary, etc etc . None of these players would be playing AFL if not for the Swans (yes even Blakey!.. McCartney is the same this year - and according to his Dad, wouldn't be good enough to be drafted)

This system rewards failure (and dumb luck) and punishes success - A Terrible business model

LPno1 - please do not reply, you're very narrow (and abundant) opinions are infuriating

I find it strange that, at a time when some are wondering out loud whether there is enough talent to support a 19th side (and, inevitably a 20th shortly afterwards), the AFL is choosing to strangulate the modest stream of talent that is now emerging from the northern states.

I’m also surprised it’s happening under the watch of Greg Swan and Tom Harley, both of whom should know better.

Remember Greg Swann was at Carlton and look how they are going

I very much agree with this Liz.
My friend that works for the AFL works directly with Harley and says he is very much on pushing the agenda for the northern states. I guess he either didn't push hard enough or was not involved in this process.

Josh Tovey from Port Melb. now 3rd in the VFL coaches votes after another BOG against Brisbane
He won the Eastern League best and Fairest at 18 playing in the bottom team and missing games due to playing vfl.
Time to put a couple on the long term list

The new rules feel like a compromise that won't please anyone. I think Northern clubs should get first dibs on talents they develop given the challenges the other states don't face, but Gold Coast's and Brisbane's hauls in recent years were too much. The latter lucked out with Father Son picks which further distorted things.
