Yep who knows but comfortable with the call. It’s not so much Curnow but think how effective Amartey has been as the second tall
Its also remarkably easy to develop/draft a playable on baller for our needs whereas there are really only like 10 guys in the country that could have the impact that Curnow has and only like 2 of them were gettable

Pretty much and let’s be real the only “asset” we missed was maybe the first this year in a year we are contending so it’s not as if it’s gunna be top 5. Next years is just a slide. We easily got our targets last year without our first rounder.

Yes. True enough.

In any event, Petracca is 30. Who knows when the slide / injuries will happen.

Yep and has already had a month off this year with injury. Look he’s a gun but is he lasting 3 years?

It was GWR that told Mellis to put his name up and then passed !

Only thing I can think is a few of those smalls played well last week

Surprised they wanted a small forward thiugh

We wouldn’t have got Curnow and we needed him way more
I'd argue that Petracca was a greater need. Our midfield has gotten pantsed on numerous occasions (in past GFs and against Geelong this year). Petracca would certainly have helped with that.

Having Petracca & Heeney rotating through the forward line and both going to the middle when needed would have been a sight to see.

I was hoping swans were secretly working on securing Petracca's services. But I guess they chose to put their eggs in the Curnow basket. Which in itself is a good signing, I just think Petracca would have been the better signing and I would have happily shipped Warner off to make it happen.

i agree with every aspect of this other than the warner reference. its our midfield that needs bolstering and it has been obviously the case in every major match including both the 2022 and 2024 gfs. if you spend your entire match against the better sides with the ball beginning on your half back line youve got to get the ball going 2/3 of the ground while your opponent only needs one third.

Curnow may prove to be an inspired signing but i would have personally prioritised either oliver or petracca ahead of curnow in relation to what our team needs.

But i cant change the past and im not important enough to have influenced the decision when it counted so go swans and i still hope curnow will kick 250 goals for us over his career

I can't see him leaving.
He will go to a lesser club and regret it.
I think that would be how he sees it.
He has said he wants to stay.
Just my opinion.
Crazy thing is McLeanS trade value has never been higher. So if he stays and Hayden goes we probably get much better trade capital then Amartey compo….. maybe more TPP pressure though

Probably true that his trade value has never been higher.

But it’s still not particularly high.

There’s a natural tendency to be overly optimistic on such matters. But McLean is a solid citizen, with well known limitations.

We ain’t getting a motza for him in a trade.

Armatey, however, if he accepts silly money elsewhere, nets solid compo.

I’ve made peace with Armatey leaving.

I’d find it much harder to make peace with paying silly overs to keep him.

Would much rather pay “overs” as you put it than think McLean is the answer in a contending side. A million a year is not overs anyway the cap has significantly increased. Amartey is having a very good year.

Good luck to Joel if he snags a contract upgrade, but we can't be overpaying for one player if it means being unable to offer a decent contract to McCartin who comes out of contract next year.
Warner's contract money when he leaves will also free up cap space, which potentially puts us in a good way if a decent free agent is available post 2027.

Wouldn't be worrying about that, very likely that at least one if not both of Rampe/Lloyd are gone, and the cap probably goes up. i'd be easily offering a million to keep Amartey, it's the old 800k he's worth that

We've offered Amartey $700k x 5, we're not going to all of a sudden increase that to $1 million!

There's probably a middle ground between the two, and it likely ends on him signing, whether that middle ground is the extra year of security or whether it's the year amount who knows. A mill for a good KPF is going to be basically market value these days

Curnow’s contract is cheap now!

I would say around $800k is more likely. There is no way he is worth a mill besides I think it may cause a problem other players coming out of contract. I know he has had a reasonable year but still can’t see how he can command that sort of figure. If he wants bigger money he may need to walk.

800k is a great value one for us whether he’d do that when he’d command 1.1-1.3 on the open market who knows

He's not getting 1.1-1.3m

St Kilda is a precautionary tale for all of the comp to see. They're going nowhere and about to lose Darcy Wilson because they overpaid on wages for average last trade period

TDK is the new Tim Kelly - perhaps this decade’s worst list management decision.

But I suspect Armatey might get a ridiculous offer - desperate clubs still exist.

To earn 1m in 2027 he would have to be in the top roughly 80 with the way that the salary cap is tracking. That is probably not where he is at the moment, but by the end of the contract could it be valuable as by 2032 or what ever there will probably be 100-150 players on 1m+ a year.

We will have to see how the new CBA hands out the salary cap and stuff like that because if it jumps into the low 20s million up from only like 15.8m in 2024 then thats where you get the big jump in AFL millionaires
