Scully & Murphy are pretty much confirmed.

Murphy made a point of mentioning in a recent interview how much his father regretted not being a one club player. Hardly the thought process of someone who is contemplating moving to another club.

I would confidently predict that neither Murphy or Scully will be playing for GWS next year.

GWS will get one out of

Either Swan/Pendlebury/Thomas for $1million a year..

(Pendlebury the better player, Thomas the better media performer)

Scully..

Murphy

(those two have been thrown around from the start)

Bartel for a million...

and Rich.

A combination of Bartel and Pendlebury would be a good platform..

Lets face it, it is hard for a player to say no to a million dollar a year contract
.

If they want either of those two, they'll have to pay a lot more than a million. Bartel will cost 1.25 plus, and Pendlebury will cost the same as Ablett did. Whether they're prepared to pay that much remains to be seen.

So some whispers segment on a radio station says theres 5 rumoured signings. Probably none, just five players still listening to offers from GWS. I can't see Scully or Murphy going, particularly Murphy whose been at the Blues through some tough years. They're up, playing finals and adding the pieces. Same could be said for the Dees except Scully has only just arrived. Realistically for guys like Swan its probably the last chance for a big dollar contract with 3+ years on it. People keep bringing up Ablett and GC, but its a bit different as the Cats had peaked and look like they're on the way down. The Pies are only just hitting their up and you'd think that the players would feel like they've worked so hard for this chance to be at the top making it harder to walk away from. Big money talks though so theres no guarantees.

I reckon theres a number of players holding out to take advantage of the pressure of GWS raids for bigger contracts as well as to see how their club goes. I think theres a few things that will make for an interesting off season:

1) If Carlton struggle and Ratten is replaced. You know if this was to happen the muck rakers would be in a frenzy making up all kinds of rubbish. I'm sure they'd have all of the guns heading out the door and demanding trades. Then they'd start the rumours of a new big name coach coming in and how things are changing with everyone deciding to stay. Would the Dees go through the same if for some reason they struggled.

2) Pies win another premiership or bomb out in a big way. If the Pies win another one its hard to see anyone leaving with a chance for the rare 3-peat. If they were to bomb out and players are getting GWS waving a big fat cheque book at them I could see at least one heading to GWS. I think the one thing going in Collingwoods favour compared to Geelong with Ablett is that the side is younger and still on the rise with the potential to be contenders for at least 3 more years.

Does anyone know Michael Johnsons contract status?
No longer in Freo's leadership group, could easily see Sheeds offering him a fresh start.
Would hate it to happen though.

i can understand why players went to gold coast but who seriously would want to live in western sydney, the coin might be better but living expenses would be higher, your leaving your mates and u r going to a non football state. i would be suprised if any top players went there, gold coast could only get ablett and thats cause his brother was there and he couldnt get on with thompson, the rest of the players they got were average.

Murphy would just be holding off re-signing to push his price up like every smart player would do. I believe Murphy is renovating his home. Murphy tweeted that Yarran's story will continue once he holds up the premiership cup with the Blues. Marc doesn't sound like someone who is interested in playing for money and a bottom four side for the next few seasons.

God I hope Murph doesn't go, but I wouldn't be surprised, it's all about the cash these days. I wouldn't hold it against him either.

I thought Scully signed a contract extension early last year? Or was that Martin?

It has been said that sheeds will target aboriginal boys and i reckon thats on the money, whats Paddy Ryders contract status Sheeds was raving about him at a Sportmans dinner i went to.He hates Carlton and Murphy could be a concern.

I think Rich will go to GWS.

The Collingwood supporters here sound a little like my own thoughts last year....finding all the reasons why not. The fact is, the money is HUGE for these guys. I would be surprised if the Pies don't lose one..I dont think it will be Swan...I think Sheedy would love Pendlebury ( why wouldnt he?..Top player and a leader of the future!)...we will see. Murphy is a chance I guess...its all speculation right now..

Just watch who ISN'T signing....for whatever nebulous reason is given. Just hope it doesn't impact on your club like it did on mine!

tbh if gws got tom scully (and to a lesser extent murphy) then the afl should hang it's head in shame. the theory behind a number 1 draft pick is that they will help the afl's worst team's off the bottom and build for succses, if an afl driven expansion team take's a team like melbourne's (who are starting to come good) best young player then they intern cripple any future asspirations for finals. it would be grossly unfair and a contradiction as to why we even have a draft

Greg March pretty much said the exact same thing way back in May 2010:

''We were all led to believe that the new clubs could take uncontracted stars, but we weren't aware their targets would be first- and second-year stars. If you suddenly allow that, then it defeats the whole purpose of the system. I'm not just talking about Dustin Martin. I haven't spoken to Melbourne or West Coast, but I would feel the same way about Jack Trengove, Tom Scully or Jack Watts or Nic Naitanui. As a football person, I don't think it's right.''

Tiger fury at lack of protection

I'll put money on Swan, Pendles or Thomas not going. Mid range player maybe but not top tier from the Pies.

While i dont think any of the above will go, with the coin these clubs can now throw around, coupled with players now seeing this as a job and looking for future security, you can never say never...

I would be shattered if Murphy left for GWS but i highly doubt it will happen and it is not just because i follow Carlton either. I dont want to repeat what other Blues supporters have said regarding his comments etc and they are spot on especially regarding the one club player comments.

If Melbourne lose Scully it is a joke and the AFL are making a mockery of our great game with these BS concessions for new teams.

IMO i think GWS will get maybe 1 elite player ( who it is i don't know ) and a host of second tier/ very serviceable players like GC did.

Will be very surprised if Scully and or Murphy leave their current clubs.

All of the rumoured players to be signing with the Gold Coast were all correct

Wasn't Andrew Swallow leaving North and also going??

Where there is smoke..

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/demons-sweating-over-tom-scully/story-e6frf9mf-1225999109227

MELBOURNE will be forced to sweat for several months on the future of No.1 draft pick Tom Scully.

As Greater Western Sydney circles uncontracted stars, Scully's management has delayed talks to allow the young Demon to concentrate on playing.

"He is contracted for this year and there is no hurry," Scully's manager Mark Kleiman said yesterday.

"We'll wait and see how the season pans outs out."

Scully signed only a two-year deal when he arrived at Melbourne in the 2009 draft, leaving him open to a GWS raid.

The 19-year-old is certain to be courted by GWS as a blue-chip investment, with rumours circulating yesterday that the new club may be prepared to offer him $6 million over six years.

Asked about the rumour on radio 3AW yesterday, Kleiman said: "There will be rumours all year about all kinds of players".

Speculation pre-Christmas had the cashed-up GWS prepared to pay $850,000 a season for Scully.

Hypothetically what compo would either Swan/Pendles/Daisy be worth?

end of first round + mid first round pick?

Campbell Brown was worth end of first round and Gazza was mid first round + first round immediately after your first selection. So somewhere inbetween?

It might not be a bad deal for Collingwood if Swan left and we got 2 first round picks for him as he is getting older.

I would still rather have Swanny though.

Heard a whisper that they have signed Scully, Bartel and Pendlebury I don't think they would have anyone yet. Hope Scully doesn't go. I also heard another melbourne player who has become best mates with Scully and has said he's going nowhere.

Are you referring to Sammy Blease ? If so, he hasn't just become best mates with Scully, he was best mates with Scully before Scully was drafted. Their relationship stems from Vic Metro days. Blease has been on the list for a year longer than Scully.

Did Sam Blease tell you that Scully was "going nowhere", or have you simply heard that that's what Blease said ? By your post it seems to be the latter. Did you read it on Demonland, or was it something more concrete ?

i can understand why players went to gold coast but who seriously would want to live in western sydney

Well they don't have to live in western sydney to play for GWS. They can live in one of the many nice areas of Sydney and commute. Personally, I would find living in Sydney a far more attractive option than living on the Gold Coast.

If Scully goes, the Dee's should get a first priority pick to use in the next five years. But the team is bigger than the individual - meaning any player can be covered. All premiership teams have 22 committed players, they don't have to be champions.

John Barnes
Matthew Lloyd

Wouldn't expect to get more than one of those top tier players like Murphy, Swan, Bartel, Pendlebury, Scully etc. as they'd all be worth Ablett-esque marque coin or close to it. Even with the extended cap there isn't room for 3 of them, well maybe there is but there'd be no room for any other signings whatsoever.

Pipe dreams.

Surely if Rich is going anywhere it'd be to Western Australia? A combination of Thomas and a good young player such as Scully would be deadly, but as mentioned above, something along those lines would be unlikely to happen. I'd bank on Pendlebury rejecting any offers and staying, he's their next captain. As a Essendon supporter, considering our list is rubbish, I'm only concerned about Pears.
