Jack Silvagni – 100 Games

The Silvagni family will be further etched in football folklore tonight, with Jack Silvagni confirmed to play his 100th AFL game. In doing so, it’s the first time that three generations in the same family will have played a century of games for the same club. Jack’s first game came back in Round 15 of the 2016 season, debuting against Collingwood to much fanfare in the long-sleeved Navy Blue guernsey worn by the two generations before him. Read more here.

Debutants

Ollie Hollands and Lachie Cowan will make their respective debuts tonight when Carlton clashes with Richmond in the season opener. Both featured for the Blues throughout their pre-season practice matches, with Hollands hitting the scoreboard against Collingwood at IKON Park while Cowan impressed with his physicality and application against Sydney in Blacktown. Hollands was selected with Carlton’s first pick (No. 11) in last year’s 2022 NAB AFL Draft, having starred for the Murray Bushrangers and Vic country in the wing position. The following night, Cowan became a Blue, when the Club struck a live trade and offloaded a future second-round draft selection to secure the Tasmanian.

Black arm bands – Graeme Anderson and Mario Bortolotto

The Carlton players will wear black armbands in honour of the late Graeme Anderson and Mario Bortolotto. Graeme was the 740th footballer to play for the Carlton Football Club since the VFL’s inception in 1897. He represented Carlton in 79 senior games from 1961-68 and was the son of 1938 Premiership player Frank Anderson. Mario (player No. 887) was a 30-game senior player from 1981-1983, and member of Carlton’s back-to-back Premiership teams of 1981 and ’82 under the watch of Senior Coach David Parkin. Both Graeme and Mario were adjudged Best Clubman at Carlton – Graeme in 1966, Mario in 1982.

First.

It's going to be forever until this game happens.

Be interesting to see if the new Blues keep rolling, or he new look Tigers come to play.

Can't wait. Sport atm is boring crap.

How many 50 metre penalties did Richmond cop last year?

Feel like rocking up in a white lab coat with Carlton Science Research written on it and holding a rat in a Richmond jumper in one hand and a syringe with 50 written on it in the other hand.

Pity we won't be at full strength.
Long way to go, don't think any clubs go into round 1 at full strength or a full list to choose from. No doubt a few more players from each club will be unavailable when it comes.

It'll still be a great contest though, both sides will be strong teams in 2023.

Walsh is a big out tho
Yeh but midfielders are probably easier to fill in than keys. E.g. if McKay or Weitering were missing they're probably bigger losses.

It's a moot point anyway, every team every week will have best 22 players out, where it impacts significantly is when teams get struck with multiple key injuries, but generally that hits teams more a couple of months in rather than round 1. No doubt between now and round 1 all clubs will have a few unavailable. Knowing in advance gives them a lot more time to plan than if it happens week to week.

Lol. Walsh is arguably their best player. Certainly top 5. Gibcus is on the fringe.

Walsh is a huge out.

Walsh out for the blues, gibcus for the tigers so neither team has any excuses. Think this will be a lot closer than people expect.
Tigers by 48.

Walsh didn't play Rnd 1 last year.

Gibcus
