Wingard is like Rioli and Naitanui, people see the flashy mercurial stuff they do and think that's all they do. Delve a little deeper and you see that they actually do a lot more for their side which is why they often get under appreciated by those outside their clubs.

Port actually needs a specialist small forward.

Wingard would easily kick 50 a season if he was to play exclusively up front, however he would be best for us if he was to play exclusively as a 30 plus possession X1. something goal mid.

He has shown that he does have the fitness required to play as a mid, but we just cannot afford not to have both him and Gray playing midfield at the same time.

Wingard probably gets more ball and kicks more goals than those two though, so his impact is easier to see and measure.

See above, people focus on the flashy and ignore the rest he does

Is Walters seriously being discussed?

The selectors sometimes struggle to pick one small forward and I would have thought there was probably a host of better players this season for that role.

If he makes the 40, would he be in contention?

He has been great, but he is no chance for AA. The only chances we have are Pendles (should comfortably make it), Williams (borderline squad chance for a small defenders role) and Swan (unlikely to make the squad).

If you can't see the things certain players do off the ball I feel for you.
Didn't see that at all, just that Wingard's effect is easier to notice because he does things that are more tangible and easily measured, that sort of stuff counts when discussing the AA team and a player's chances.

What Wingard is doing with the ball means he's booked a spot on the HFF if he maintains his form.

Matching every other small for goals with 20+ possessions.

From a non-statistical standpoint, he's playing better than he did in his previous AA season. He's kept us in a lot of games we had no business being in. He's a freak.

Barring him disappearing or another couple of smalls going berserk, he's in.

Interestingly enough Fox Footy are talking up Jamie Cripps as a smokey for AA honours

I really don't think Betts is in anymore. He has had a shocking 6 weeks.

Started like a house on fire, but has dropped away badly.

Wingard is a lock for one small forward position, and I think it will depend who has a better finish to the season out of Betts, Bruest, Walters and Rioli for the other spot, as they are all pretty even now.

They may even just put some attacking mids on the HF, with Wingard in the FP.

Jamie Cripps fifth in the AFL for tackles

Yeah he's been a machine for us up forward with his pressure.

Surprised he's being thrown up for AA by Healy and Dunstall, but it's a good recognition of his efforts anyway.

He's a very, very outside chance. If they went with a second forward from us it would probably be LeCras, decent numbers and a more well known player. Don't think either should be in the squad though.

Interesting, off the top of my head I can only think of maybe 3 guys (Betts, Breust and the Chad) who've had better years. What players comprise this 'host'? Walters started the season pretty slowly so I can understand why he isn't one of the frontrunners right now, he's had a good couple of months though and I see no reason why he couldn't be in contention towards the end of the season.

Typically the only shut down player they have in the squad is the fullback.

So someone iike a Talia (Glass in early seasons) who don't provide a great deal offensively would still be picked.

Other than that - very rarely is a defensive player picked.

Cripps is putting together a fantastic "team focussed" season

However they are never going to be picked in the AA side.

Breust is in the same boat as Walters. Started slowly and have only in the past 5 or so weeks started hitting their straps.

Did you just glaze over during the last few pages, Wingard and Cripps have both definitely been better, then it's debatable about Elliott and Garlett.

Cripps doesn't kick enough goals to be in a pocket and doesn't get enough disposals to be on a flank. Too many good small forwards to get in the team for pressure acts this year.

Whilst I agree - Breust who has been considered averages 2.9 goals contributed per game, Cripps is at 2.6 (Goals and GAs)

Identical possession numbers - with Cripps significantly above in pressure/tackles

Again - I don't think he will get in - in fact I think he will miss the squad - but he isn't a crazy nominee

I think I threw his name up a month ago, been a very good season. Whether he needs another season is the question. However I wouldn't be disappointed if he gets there.
