I don't know that this has been mentioned, but have people noticed that Port have tinkered with the Creed to add "Supporters" to Players and Management? Songs and dancing girls and pumping fists pretty much pass me by, but I don't think it's right to start messing around with the actual words of the Creed. It's not like it's written in Chaucerian English, and really, what personal sacrifices do they expect supporters to suffer to achieve the common end? I guess it's nice they want to include us, but there are other ways to do that, and this strategy looks disrespectful to me (as well as coming across as nonsensical).

I'm torn.

In principal I agree that original documents shouldn't be messed with.

But, like my early years bomber jacket with "Port Power" on the back, I can live with it.

And the same with the supporters angle. After all we have certainly suffered this year.

Yeah, I don't like the change. It does smell very much like 19th man.

When I support the club, I am not suddenly part of the creed - I am showing my support for the creed. I don't want to pretend I am suddenly there at training puking my guts out every week, or that the ridiculous amount of time I spend on Bigfooty is something that Fos would encourage so that we can win more. Thats ridiculous.

Suddenly the creed implicitly endorses throwing beer cans at the opposing full forward.

I don't agree with it.

I was pretty upbeat about the history & tradition of the club etc being brought into the marketing focus and have pushed for it in the many debates on this board and also directly with the club, but it's getting tackier by the minute.

Very astute pick up there FF. The creed on the port website under the history section remains unchanged so hopefully it was a gaff by whoever designed that membership section.

It would be completely nonsensical if "supporters" was added, i'd be disappointed if it stuck. Does this mean we the supporters will be reciting the creed before every game?

Agree with the sentiments of this thread.

Don’t **** with The Creed! Our Marketing department isn't exactly going from strength to strength here. I swear they have hired some snazzy marketing graduate douche bag with a textbook resume and great spin, but severely lacking in any understanding what so ever about what Port Adelaide as a football club is all about.

You can see straight through it

Our supporters are alienated - Lets include them in the creed!

Duh.

Like all people/companies/organisations who's marketing focus is the broader mass population they just push and push until the "brand" becomes so diluted & generic that it loses all currency & meaning. I hope the club isn't falling victim to this. I think it diminishes us. Where is the subtlety? The quiet arrogance of "this is who we are, like it or lump it"? I personally would like to see the club just put it out there & pull back a little.

I think the whole flaw is that its trying the whole Freo-ish `make the supporter feel involved without actually involving them' tack, still.

I don't think emotive `get behind your team' style marketing of `we're all in this together' is likely to work with Port fans, because the experience of the average Port fan is pretty much like going to the casino and barracking for the dealer. Its cold, its cruel, and its fantastic.

We don't care about the plucky little guy that could, we care about the combine harvester ripping up the chaff. The club is (and should be) supported for its strength and will, not its family attitude, digger spirit and happy-go-lucky attitude.

Chucking the supporters into the creed is warping its original meaning - the majority of us are precisely the hangers-on that Fos warned us all to get out of the management of the club.

Tony Saulters went on TPFP a couple of months ago and and mentioned that the club was wrestling with this small change and asked for opinions after deciding to go with the Live the Creed marketing. Like the club, those who responded were split.

If this is on the membership package then whilst not happy with it I can sort of except it.

However if I go to the Port Club and see that they have changed the original document or stick up the new one all over the club rooms then I'd be pissed off.

The official club creed should be the original words not the updated ones. If it gives the members some sense of some sort of commitment the as I said I sort of accept it on the membership package. But I don't want to see the change anywhere else. In the change rooms the original creed should be on the wall not the amended one.

:D

Porthos, did you play half back flank and run straight at the ball when you played in your younger days?

The trouble is, now there's two versions of the one thing floating around, much like the Port Adelaide Football Club. And imperfect copies always create problems, as we've seen. ;)

I know it's an extreme example but I haven't seen the Gettysburg Address rewritten to include

Four score and seven years ago our fathers and mothers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men and women are created equal.

It just wasn't necessary.

And it's a pity because I liked the presentation of the membership booklet with the juxtaposition of Port AFL and Port SANFL photos. It was a subtle yet strong message of the lineage of the club.

Yeah, just another seemingly minor detail (to those who make such decisions) that in the end severely compromises our stand regarding the history and identity.

We the supporters, boot strappers, water boys, players, normal managers, player managers, SANFL appointed board members, cats, dogs, moms and daddies of Port Pawa People's Front, accept the heritage which supporters, boot strappers, water boys, players, normal managers, player managers, SANFL appointed board members, cats, dogs, ... is not to be confused with the heritage of those phoneys from the People's Front of Port ...

Don't get me started on this kind of thing. The Crow trolls are already all over it on Bay 13. I posted a thread on bay 13 about this exact thing. Imperfect copies mean we lose all identity, which really is all we have from a marketing sense.

Hasn't there been a few amendments to the American Constitution over the years?

But then again, our Creed is a much more important document:D
