How can Ellis be captain?
Just had no game awareness.

Needed to swing hard and he bunts it.

Not going to blame a no 9-10 really. One or both of David and Chaudhary had to be there in the end

This is answering one of the questions earlier, and why Tim David is a huge question mark to make it in the national team for this years World T20.

He just lacks a bit of killer instinct to finish games off. Too often he has brain fades. He is a lazy fielder as evidenced again tonight by another dropped catch and even the catch he took, he didnt make it look comfortable.

There are better alternatives to Tim David in terms of all round ability and/or batting.

Absolutely atrocious chase. Only a rookie stopped it from being an utter embarrassment.

McDermott and David in particular should be embarrassed from how they got out. And wtf was Ellis thinking? Nudging the ball around when you need a boundary?!
And Jewell. What a dumb shot to play on the third ball of the innings.

He's been batting like a cowboy for a while now, pretty much swinging from the first ball he faces. It's not necessary - particularly tonight when the total being chased was quite modest.

If Nathan Ellis were Pakistani, we would be questioning if match fixing was involved. No intent, should have been more committed to that 2nd run. Im still crossing my head why he didnt look to run that 2nd run.

There wasn't two there, he probably would've been run out by half the pitch trying to go back for two but he still should have at least tried.

You never know the keeper could have fumbled the ball under pressure.

The problem was that he just bunted that last ball for a single rather than having a swing at it to try and get more runs than a single.

Hard to blame tailenders though, the Hurricanes needed a proper batsman there at the end to get them home, it's their job not the bowlers

You didn’t give any alternatives and don’t say Short who opens domestically and is utterly trash against spin. There is a huge issue in genuine finisher’s domestically. We have quite a few top order bats but Wade aside there isn’t another finisher and the issue with Wade is are you playing him AND Inglis in a t20 side?

Ollie Davies might be one but he’s done nothing for the Thunder this year. Who else is there? Webster maybe but my gut says he’s not international standard wouldn’t be a terrible shout to have a look though.

Commentators cream over him cause he can hit a long ball, but he's a poor finisher of games.

To use commentator Dan Christian as an example, someone like that would have come in and just gotten it done, time and again through his career. Maxwell, Ashton Turner are other examples. Even Jordan Silk I'd back more. There's plenty of other players you could trust in that scenario but TD just seems to continually be the let down when it's time to do his late role of finishing the innings/winning the match, or saving his team when they lose a few early.

You have half answered it yourself. He should have looked to run the first run harder, and that may have put pressure on the fielder eg fumble , to allow them to run the 2nd game. If he gets run out, so be it.

Needing 5 off 3 balls, the 3rd last ball was technically a free swing , and Ellis dabbed it to the side.

Strange. Im not sure if he was reading the game situation well.

Stoinis, Matt Short (yep even him batting down the order is a better option than David)- from memory he bat at number 4 in the IPL, Daniel Sams, Aaron Hardie, even a Cam Green batting at 4 in the IPL is a better bat, Ashton Turner (when fit), Will Sutherland, Ben Dwarshuis can give the ball a whack on a good day, Abbott didnt he make a ton in one of the English comps in quick fire time last season?, same too Neser who bat at 7 tonight, Wade down the order, Maxwell.........If we are playing purely specialist bats, even Fraser-McGurk can whack the ball maybe bigger and more consistently than Tim David. Id even give him a go down from 4 to 7.

You can build the Aussie team with a top 3 of: Warner, Head, Mitch Marsh........there are plenty of all rounders in the Australian set up that can give the ball a tonk

Tim David is a 1 trick pony. For someone that only plays as a specialist batsman he is wasting a space.

All you are doing is picking top order batsmen it doesn’t work like that. Cam Green made all his runs in the top 3 in the IPL he’s not a number 6. Stoinis is awful and that’s exactly the point there isn’t a million bats we can put at positions 5-7, and no we shouldn’t flood the side with top to middle order bats. No issue playing JFM but he has to bat top 3, same with literally all the options you listed! Don’t tell me you listed Sams he has been horrific for the Thunder with the bat for 2 years he’s a number 8. There is a reason they keep saying the same thing we are looking for genuine finishers. Is David one not sure but he’s one of the very few we have. Almost have to play him unless we gamble on Davies

Stoinis is awful I agree but he is a better fielder and better bowler than Tim David. Id take Stoins consistency over Tim Davids batting all day , everyday.

Both dont care if they dont play Australia. No good plowing 3-4 good hits in a game like tonight but still ending up on the losing side. There is a reason why the Hobart Hurricanes havent been a consistent side or dominating side for a while. And its also a reason why Perth Scorchers (his home town ) didnt pick him as well. If he was that good, he would have been a regular Scorcher.

If you wanted to blame Tim David then I think his running between wickets was worse than his shot selection.
That hook to deep backward square where he only ran 1 was disgraceful.

Need some commentators with the minerals to call these things out.

Ponting also said they erred by taking the power surge with the right handers hitting to the long boundary.

Agree on all points. Ponting does call things out occasionally, but can pull his punches a little (maybe a bit more when it’s Hobart as well).

The problem for me is that as soon as things don’t go to plan in a chase there is rarely any clear thinking by coaches, captains and batsmen (outside of Perth and the Sixers, maybe also Brisbane since Billings has got there). The Renegades are s**t at it - go too hard when it’s not necessary, or too slow when they need to get the run rate moving. Hobart are another team that are awful at it.

Tonight, once they knew they only needed 6-7 an over and the pitch was a lively one then the aim should be to not lose wickets. 50 for 2 after ten overs would’ve been fine (in a 20 over chase, maybe adjust up for the reduced game). Jewell instead tosses his wicket away, McDermott does the same when the innings had been stabilised and there was no need to, and David puts the final nail in the coffin with his shitty shot. They needed to blunt the bowling as dot balls don’t kill you in a low chase, only losing wickets. It’s so basic but instead it’s like they kept coming out and swinging the bat at everything.

I honestly don’t know what some of these BBL coaches are getting paid for, because the complete lack of any sensible approach to in-game tactics is evident.

Now imagine that Vince and Silk are at the crease chasing a low total but are three down early. Or Hardie and Turner. You’d be a lot more confident that they’d see it through.

totally agree with you but i reckon it's the new age coaching method of "back yourself in" that is killing teams. no matter the score. someone needs to point out no don't go to cow corner when it's run a ball.

Bartlett's improvement with the white ball has been great to see. Looking forward to him getting back in the whites for the Bulls post-BBL after the missing the first half through injury.

Also needed to run 2 hard, force the fielder at mid off to maybe panic, or the bowler to do so.
Ellis I think Sent Dooley back.
I sometimes think the BBL teams are auditioning to be the next Washington Generals.
