Interesting disparity between Collingwood and Richmond. One might reasonably have expected them to swap places on votes order based on games won.

Is that the highest votes to game ratio of all time? Clearly a deserved winner but what a terrible system

3 times as many votes as Hawkins essentially, who was the best forward by a country mile.

Bit of a shallow medal these days
Votes these days are higher than they used to be. Even Boak, Petracca and Steele got more votes than predicted.

I reckon there is so much media hype around the top players these days the umpires lean towards them when voting.

25 disposals no matter how bad they are get you an auto 3+ these days.

It'll be because of ties on some legs. There would've been more than 20 players finish top 20 for example, so the odds are reduced. I had Neale/Boak/Steele as a boxed trifecta, but because Petracca also finished top 3 my payout was reduced.
I understand that I guess. But I lost money Despite all the legs win. Haha. That’s what I don’t understand.

Been saying for a few years now. If you’re being talked up in the media and get a few touches, you’re getting votes

13 times has the winner polled 30 votes, 8 of them have happened since 2009 and all other polled at least 26. Compared to the 90’s 7 were 25 or less.

Swan broke the record in 2011 with 34
Dangerfield broke the record in 2016 with 35
Dusty broke the record in 2017 with 36
Neale would of broken the record this year had it of been a full season.
Fyfe 33 last year

Richmond's tally is genuinely anomalous. But there's a perfectly obvious explanation for why the Pies did better than the win column would suggest.

Collingwood only lost 2 games by more than 3 goals (and received no votes in these smashings) while winning 8 games by more than 3 goals. Collingwood players hogged the votes in games we won fairly easily, while picking up votes in close losses. Which makes perfect sense.

The only weird result was Pies players getting all the votes in the Tigers draw. But it seems more that the umps were into screwing Tiger players than loving Collingwood players in particular this year.

Despite what was clearly a very good season for Neale, I have a theory that the Brownlow is being influenced by the 24/7 media storm and the internet. Umpires are prompted more now than ever to focus on certain players in teams when they play because they'd be reading the same things we do, week in and week out, about how well a certain player is playing.

The Brownlow Medal winners are becoming far more predictable, and far more midfield dominant. Long gone are the years where a player could lose the Brownlow despite being the best players in a season, i.e. Leigh Matthews and KB through the 70s, Carrey through the 90s, West through the early 00s.

Also - hopefully a Richmond supporter can remind me, there was a player who was a Brownlow Medal favourite one year that didn't poll a single vote and I can't remember who it was.

Average votes per winner:

1980s - 21
1990s - 24
2000s - 25
2010s - 30

Yeah it is a shame that votes are pretty much all given to mids.

Harris Andrews was more dominant in a lot of games where the ball just kept rebounding as they couldn't get past him. Shame players like him and Hawkins have no chance.

Geoff Raines 1980. My memory is that he wasn't favourite - I remember people being asked for a tip as they arrived, and Fitzroy coach Bill Stephen saying "I'm going for a dark horse - Geoff Raines".

Raines won the b&f and one of the GF umpires said he would've got votes that day if they'd been awarded.

Clearly the umpires look at stats sheet now before voting to avoid being embarrassed. Was it better in the past when they didn't do this and threw up the occasional anomaly? It's taken away a lot of the mystique.

Raines, that's the one. I think the major anomaly was not awarding him a vote at all.

Like you said, the mystique is gone. Players seem to care about it less, pundits seem to care less, supporters seem to care less.

Bit of a snoozer when the results are as predicted months ago, when was the last time a non-fav has won the charlie?

In saying that, congrats Neale, a deserving winner and seems like a down to earth good bloke. Lions done well

Doesn't make sense to me, you can't lose in this instance. You sure you didn't get your $250 staked + $229.50, meaning your balance should've gone up by $479.58? Otherwise I'd be contacting them. The amount you won would suggest your odds were reduced to about $1.92

No it makes perfect sense.

$250 @ 5.51 = $1,377.50.

He had a 6 way tie (Bontempelli 20th) so receives 1/6 of the payout.

$1,377.50/6 = $229.58.

Well deserved, as Neale was clearly the best in it this year. 31 votes and 10 margin in a shortened season is also pretty legendary.

Funny how the placings basically panned out as predicted. Commendable effort by Luke Parker to get 15, and Oscar Allen polling in 3(?) games was a pretty good effort.

Priddis 2014 the last non fave to win I believe
Fyfe 2019. Dangerfield, Neale and arguably Cripps were more popular with punters. Fyfe was seen as a top 5 contender along with the Bont.

The Sidebottom-Brayshaw placings in 2018 were also not seen coming.

It makes sense richmond regularly have maybe 1 player that gets over 20 touches whereas Collingwood have pendelbury, Adams and treloar who get over 20 every game

If kicking goals and marking arent valued as much these days, then why do we vote for most popular?

Why aren't we voting for the best tackle or one percenter?

Are we suggesting these skill sets aren't highlights of the game?
