Not sure about the Griffen inclusion. He has been in great WAFL form, which should be rewarded. And if you were going to play 2 ruckmen you'd do it against a top heavy team with 2 ruckmen of their own.

But having said that, I think our best chance to win this game will be through exploiting their too-many talls and out-running them in the 2nd half, much like the 1st derby of last year (and much like Essendon did last week). If Pav played forward we could stretch them there too but just don't see it happening going by his comments during the week.

Including JA will give us the flexibility to swing either McPhee or Jack himself down back if necessary.

I would like to see Pitt earn his next game via the WAFL. He's done well at times and is obviously a player of the future but I've felt he's had a bit of an armchair ride at times, considering a couple of his games have been a bit average in terms of effective disposals. If Pitt is relegated, I'd expect to see either one of Michie or Mellington get a gig - still young but bigger bodies more equipped for derby fever (plus we need to keep developing players).

After another 6 disposals, 2 clangers and absolutely no positive impact on the game, I'd drop Johnson. But with our injuries, it's not going to happen.

Roberton had an absolute shocker and has only played a couple of good games this year. Time for him to realise what that means.

IN: Jack A, Michie/Mellington.
OUT: Pitt, Roberton.

* If Ballas doesn't come up, Crichton to come in changing with Palmer between HF/mid.

As it stands Fyfe will play. Ballas is 90% chance to miss imo, really don't see why they would risk him, unless the tears were very minor, but the fact that he is in doubt tells me he will miss.

outs:
MJ (lack of application),
Roberton (out of form),
Mayne (kicking practice needed)
Ballantyne (sob)
ins: JA (FF)
Crighton,
Mellington,
Michie

Just cannot agree with this. Too many changes. The only one probs is Ballas out and JA in??
Crighton ain't ready yet, the other two too raw

OUTS:

Roberton
Ballantyne
Pitt

IN:

Schammer
Anthony
Mitchie

REASONS:

Roberton is out of touch, needs some full WAFL gametime
Ballas is injured
Pitt could use some regular WAFL and Mitchie deserves a game

Schammer to come in for a strong body in the midfield, possibly in a tagging role.

fortunately for everyone, i'm not on the selection committee. Ballas is injured and did no running at training. I though JA might make a reasonable inclusion in the forward line. Mayne probably won't go, Harvey loves the forward pressure he provides

In - Anthony
Out - Ballantyne (inj)

Broughton v LeCras
Grover v Darling
McPharlin v Kennedy
Johnson v Lynch/Cox/Naitanui (that match up is a concern :()
McPhee to run with Embley freeing up a spot in the forward line for Anthony
DeBoer v Kerr
Clancee as a defensive forward on Hurn
Palmer and Priddis head to head in the middle

Pitt as sub.

We have a six day break next week so if Griffin plays well this weekend I'd take him to Adelaide.

Out: Johnson, Pearce, Pitt, Lower.
In: Michie, Anthony, Crowley, Schammer.

Crowley must play as the tagger. He has great endurance and needs to sacrifice his own game to shut down Shuey or Priddis.

 Imagine a midfield with Palmer, Crowley and Schammer...

Crowley might come in to play on Embley.

I love how people are saying that Roberton is so out of form, based off one game where he came on in the third quarter as the substitute. He has been pretty good this season when given the chance. I said it earlier, but he simply shouldn't be a substitute. It doesn't play to his strengths. I'd like to see Roberton be given the job on Embley.

I can't pick the changes this week. Seems like Anthony will probably play, but I don't like the idea of him, Kepler and Clancee all up forward. Will leave us far too slow, especially if Ballantyne doesn't play. Bringing Crowley in wouldn't help much either.

Like the idea of McPhee on the seagull that is Embley....freeing Anthony to go forward. Anthony will likely get beaten if Glass takes him, but at least that free's up Mayne/Kep to run amok.

If Ballantyne is out, then Pearce keeps his spot.

Michie to debut - Harv's loves blooding debutants in big games. Watch this space. Actually, wouldn't even be surprised if it was Mellington.

I'd go with a tag-team-tag of JVB & de Boer on Wayne Kerr....10minute spurts each, then go to a forward pocket when resting.

Palmer can be the sub

Schammer to come in for a strong body in the midfield, possibly in a tagging role.

Not this old chestnut again...Byron Schammer is 176cm and 79kg; he is not a strong body, a big body, a hard body or any other sort of body. He is shorter than Michael Walters, he is the same weight as Jesse Crichton and when he isn't falling over on his own accord he is brushed aside just as easily as both of them.

If your only reason for bringing Byron Schammer in is his strong body (a) you're being silly and (b) Crowley would be a better choice.

Roberton was fantastic as the substitute in Round 1 so that ends that theory.

He has also certainly been decidely average in a couple of games prior to the Richmond game so calls for him to be dropped are quite valid.

Kepler, Anthony, Clancee, Crowley, Mayne and McPhee/JVB isn't a forward line I'd want to see either. I'm hoping Crowley is sent to find some form in the WAFL for at least a week.

Well lets just say I respectfully disagree about Roberton. It's about time we gave him a real job, as opposed to being a bits and pieces player. Having Embley would be a great opportunity.

It's a good thing West Coast aren't a quick side, because we will likely have a very slow forward line this week. If only Hinkley was ready...

Mellington is more of a forward than Michie, plus given he won the Fremantle WAFL player of the round this week if it was one of this years picks that's where I'd put my money.

Obviously I haven't seen much of Mellington this year, but his tank wasn't really the best last year. Which is why he spent most of his time playing deeper, pretty much in the same role as Mayne does. Sounds like it may have improved, and he would be a good addition if Ballantyne does miss.

I'm a big fan of Michie though. He is Fyfe-like, think he has the versatility to keep his spot even with a full team to choose from.

outs:
Mayne (kicking practice needed)

Surely you are jus joshin? I don't understand how this works - are the goals different in the WAFL? Better wind conditions? Easier angles to kick at? Bouncier ball? More attempts at goal that he can't take in practice?

Sure, let's wreck someone's confidence (and any semblance of our forward pressure with Ballas presumably out) by dropping them in the hope they'll pick up confidence in a lower league taking the same set shots they do in practice and in AFL games :thumbsu:

You do realise that we have 7 talls (KP's and Rucks). Of which 2 are in the top 25 tacklers inside 50m in the league

That's the same amount Richmond played last week.

Secondly - Essendon beat us in the third quarter by smashing the clearances.

We won the 4th quarter with 9 scoring shots - so we were hardly out run.

To be fair, I think they took their foot off the pedal a bit being 5 goals up with 7 minutes to go in such an intense game... but credit to your blokes to keep going.

They also had 7 Rucks & KP's - so perhaps they ran out of puff?

I was at both games last weekend and here are some things I noticed;

The Eagles looked a class above Essendon in the warm up. I thought they were going to explode and overrun the bombers and they came out and did it. Kerr was electric, the midfield was working very hard to keep him loose and collecting easier possessions behind a mark. Hird/Thompson put a tag on him and it shut up shop for the Eagles midfield.

There is talk about Gaff and Masten coming back to "bolster" their rotation. I feel that their primary avenue to goal is Daniel Kerr and Luke Shuey, I also back Mundy and Pavlich to beat either of them for height and strength. I rate Mundy's decision and disposal above both Eagles, but Pavlich's below both Eagles.

I expect Scott Selwood to try and rough up Stephen Hill again.

In: Barlow(?), Anthony
Out: Ballantyne, Pitt(?)

Whichever team can make the most of their set shots on goal will win, whoever is in front at three quarter time will go on to win by 20-30 points.
I think Fremantle can vastly improve on their game against Richmond but I don't think the Eagles can play any better than they did against Essendon.

Extraction:

  • With Harves' focus on youngsters performance in RD7 I'd say Pitt and Roberton are feeling heat the most.
  • I can't see MJ getting dropped - deserved, but essential for matchup.
  • Pearce? for highly touted WAFL performance did he do enough?
  • Ballas is a big loss (if there is even the slightest doubt, they wont risk a player of his calibre for upcoming games)
Injection possibilities:

  • Anthony
  • Crowley (no, you dont have to play WAFL to see the light. Forget Priddis - Crowley will be outing NaughtyKerr)
  • Michie the sub
  • Mellington plays if Balla is out.
No question one of Michie, Anthony or Mellington a certainty to debut. And I got a feeling any one will make an impact on this Derby.

This idea has merit.

Suggesting Hinkley is just silly though.

I agree with this, I can definitely see Michie securing his spot in the team when he gets his opportunity. His form in the pre-season was outstanding in our games. He just seemed to bob up with the ball alot and feed/link up. Very Fyfe-like in his versatility.

I was at your game on Sunday and there were periods where you had Darling, Lynch, Kennedy and Naitanui/Cox all in the forward line together which would be considered a tall forward line by many people.

Yes but your seriously tall forward line was what I was referring to. I'd expect it to stretch us 1st half and our extra run from the backline to stretch you in the 2nd half.

You also had Weedon as sub = 8 out of 22.

Essendon did win more clearances in the 3rd but your team also looked a bit flat and lacked run and link-up play I thought. Just my opinion. And you scored a few consolation goals when the game was over, doesn't mean you weren't overrun.

I wasn't meaning your team isn't fit - they look ten times fitter than last year, just that I think you play too tall and that curtails your runners. Obviously this is offset a little by Darling and Lynch being so mobile. Also Cox and Natanui as well.
