How is Weedon a tall?

My bad I certainly thought he was taller than he is. He played like a tall utility on the weekend. Certainly isn't a 'runner' - at least not at this stage.

He played like a lead-up HF I thought. But having only seen him play for one and a half quarters I'll retract the comment!

I was at both games last weekend and here are some things I noticed;

The Eagles looked a class above Essendon in the warm up. I thought they were going to explode and overrun the bombers and they came out and did it. Kerr was electric, the midfield was working very hard to keep him loose and collecting easier possessions behind a mark. Hird/Thompson put a tag on him and it shut up shop for the Eagles midfield.

There is talk about Gaff and Masten coming back to "bolster" their rotation. I feel that their primary avenue to goal is Daniel Kerr and Luke Shuey, I also back Mundy and Pavlich to beat either of them for height and strength. I rate Mundy's decision and disposal above both Eagles, but Pavlich's below both Eagles.

I expect Scott Selwood to try and rough up Stephen Hill again.

In: Barlow(?), Anthony
Out: Ballantyne, Pitt(?)

Whichever team can make the most of their set shots on goal will win, whoever is in front at three quarter time will go on to win by 20-30 points.
I think Fremantle can vastly improve on their game against Richmond but I don't think the Eagles can play any better than they did against Essendon.

Wishful thinking much?

Not this old chestnut again...Byron Schammer is 176cm and 79kg; he is not a strong body, a big body, a hard body or any other sort of body. He is shorter than Michael Walters, he is the same weight as Jesse Crichton and when he isn't falling over on his own accord he is brushed aside just as easily as both of them.

If your only reason for bringing Byron Schammer in is his strong body (a) you're being silly and (b) Crowley would be a better choice.

He's stronger than Pitt.

He's in better form that Crowley. In fact, Schammer outpoints Crowley statistically in every aspect except goals.

He's faster than Crowley.

He averaged over 4 tackles a game in 2008 - 2009, i'm pretty sure he can do a handy job at tagging

I'm being silly.

He's stronger than Pitt.

So is a 12 year old girl. That is not why Pitt is in the side. It's not the sole reason for any player being in the team.

Arm wrestles aside, how do Schammers actually footballing efforts at AFL level last season compare to the majority of what Pitt has dished up so far in 2011?

He's in better form that Crowley. In fact, Schammer outpoints Crowley statistically in every aspect except goals.

He's faster than Crowley.

Crowley has been our worst performing senior player in 2011. If Crowley is the measuring stick, you're going to drown. Funnily enough, Crowley is also not in the side.

Your reason for bringing Schammer into the side was for a big body in the midfield, and the option of him performing a tagging role. Neither of those reasons make any sense. Firstly, he is not a big body. Secondly, he is not a tagger. Crowley could do both of those things better than Schammer, and just like Schammer, Crowley could suck at everything else as well.

What about his games in 2010? He scored a trifecta of terrrible, rubbish and ordinary.

If you're a negating player in the midfield, just about the most important job you have is setting blocks around stoppages. Both offensively for your teammates and defensively on your opponent(s). Given that, there aren't many players on our list who are a worse choice for that role than Schammer; well, unless being a trip hazard earns bonus points.

I'm being silly.

Pretty much. After a single game in the reserves you could've made a stronger case for Hinkley.

I was at your game on Sunday and there were periods where you had Darling, Lynch, Kennedy and Naitanui/Cox all in the forward line together which would be considered a tall forward line by many people.

Of course - our forward line was stacked - but we still had 14 + 1 runners - the same as Essendon.

The reality remains - we had 7 Key position - largely 4 forward, 1 ruck and 2 back.

Essendon started 4 forward and ended up shifting 1 back to go 3, 1, 3

But in terms of run - we each had the same number

I see Robarton has been omitted while Crowley, Anthony, Griffen, Crichton and someone named Christopher Mayne have been added. Mayney's mum must have submitted the list.

Cannot see the need for Griffin in. Hard to pick 3 or 4 from that extended bench, a lot will depend on whether Ballantyne gets up I think. Palmer, Crichton, Pearce with Pitt as sub would be my choice but who knows what Harves has in mind?

Thanks, saved me from responding. Baffles me how to this day he can be considered a "strong or big body".

Onto the changes, i would keep Crowley to negate someone like Andrew Snipely.
Palmer-i would like to drop but i doubt that will improve his confidence if he was. I think Rhys is probably the player best equipped to be the sub, to absolutely smash each contest and get the pill, as long as he dishes off (Not to the opposition in def 50 plz).
Clancee-should play this game to see if he can hold his spot as one game is not enough to make a judgment (he could be playing for his career imo) but wouldn't be surprised to see him miss.
Jesse-i think will be cut (not sure of WAFL form though) but i like this kid, think he will be apart of our future midfield.
Griff SHOULD play, to reward his form in the WAFL but not sure if that will make us too top heavy? Either way i am wondering what he can give us, so wouldn't be adverse to seeing him play.
Pitt-we know is a player of the future, unfortunately at present he isn't giving us that much and we can't carry to many passengers, but i am convinced the only way he is going to improve is if we keep playing him.
Jack/John-i am itching for him to get a game to see if he can translate his sharpshooting prowess into the team. I think he is the most likely in, a tall for tall.

And lol at no Schammer, his papers were stamped long ago unfortunately...

Edit: this is assuming Ballas is playing since he is named on the ground...

If thats the case, maybe Anthony will have to wait for another opportunity? I don't see forwardline with Keps,Pav,Anthony,Mayne working

Bloody oath it would - pav and Mayne taking grabs around half forward and Jack and Keps coming out either way from the square and Balla mopping up

Totally agree, a forward line looking like

FF Balla Anthony Kep
HF DeBoar/VanBerlo Pav Mayne

is up there with the best imo

yep, would work well I reckon.

Mayne plays like a small anyway with his pressure.

We'd stretch the Eagles defense much like they will try to do to ours.

Please play the Pav forward, and let Anthony be wide open and nail 6 of them...

We've been playing Kepler as our only genuine key forward for most of each game so I'll be very surprised if they throw that system out the window and play Pavlich AND Anthony in attack.

They might rotate Anthony off the bench and play Anthony/Pav together while Kepler's in the ruck but i don't expect the three talls to spend the bulk of the game together in attack.

If Anthony plays there is absolutely no way they will play Pav forward.
Main tall tagets will be keps and anthony or keps an Pav.
It will not be keps, pav an anthony.

Just like i will not want to see keps, mcphee and anthony/Pav in forward line.
3 is too many
So if Anthony plays Mcphee must be shifted out of forward line.
