I have now read 67 posts along the lines of "If Stef gets injured, we can sub in X, Y, Z, etc".

The fact that so many people have identified selecting Stef as a huge risk means he most definitely shouldn't be selected. I'd be absolutely gobsmacked if Martin plays.
Your logic on this one is pretty unscientific. Of those 67 posts 0% have any specific knowledge of his recent injuries and fitness. The mention of him potentially not getting through a game is only discussed because Bevo kept using it as an excuse for not playing him.

Those who believe two rucks are critical to winning, point to Young’s 50% time on ground as evidence that Martin would be no worse and Sweet better in terms of their ability to contribute, especially with the right medi sub.

54% agree with you 16% against and 30% undecided

Yeah but we don’t know sh*t, if he plays he’s fit and the clubs obviously not expecting him to break down mid game
If he plays, is there a need to have so many posters saying, X/Y/Z breaks down in case Martin gets injured.

I understand some people are more injury prone than others but if the Club felt the same way, that their sub was purely selected in the event Stef doesn't get through the game, is that not enough to clearly see he shouldn't play?

I believe Jack Macrae said they would have their main session today. Interesting to see what the Bont does.
Jonathan Brown mentioned his similar story back in grand final week in the early 2000’s. It’s a very fine line between doing enough to ensure you’re confident to play, and not doing too much to ensure you wake up the next day with additional soreness.

Sometimes the soft Qualifying (Geelong are old and beaten up) and the cushy, comfortable ride through to a Prelim backfires. They're favourites as GWS were, they're playing at home as GWS were, let's do it Dogs.
We had a lot of momentum and goodwill heading in the GWS prelim in 2016. I was at the ground that day. Still brings a tear to my eye when I think of the roar when the doggies ran out and the boos for GWS at their home ground. For a small club, we really turned up and showed support. Met some really nice people too. But maybe because we won haha.

My take is that you should not go into a cut throat final or any game for that matter, with a player who is under a cloud due to injury or fitness, unless that player is Marcus Bontempelli.

Having the sub rule actually allows us to take more of a risk in this regard.

I agree with you, the club should and will only pick him thinking that he will get through a full game, however it would be incompetent to not at least consider all possibilities.

Bevo did leave a little window open for Martin. Said our ruck situation wasn’t ideal to what it was when Martin and Tim were playing together.

He also mentioned Anthony Scott, McNeil, Wallis and JJ as those who have played the Weightman role and could come in for him, in that order.

Also mentioned that Big O was really getting on top in the middle, hitting the ball forward for Brisbane. Didn’t sound happy with that at all. Said we benched for so long, specifically for him to come on only when English needed breaks.

Overall, if I was Lewis Young and I heard that, I’d be nervous! I don’t think he’ll have English rucking all game, and he didn’t sound positive about Martin or Young. Interesting times!

No idea what will happen but that definitely leaves the door open a little more than the last couple of weeks.

After listening to Bevo 99% sure no Martin.

My guess is

Outs Flea, Young
In JJ, Cordy, Medical sub Scott

Schache helps Tim in the ruck. Cordy to play defensive forward option to play back at times and even pinch hit the ruck just think he gets the nod over Young because he would do a better job on stopping Alir's influence. Interesting what Blighty said you play Alir from behind which helps to prevent him dropping off and intercepting without an opponent.

Not sure playing Cordy forward for the first time in a long time in a prelim is a better call than playing a Stef Martin who is not 100% fit.

“We could just sub Young on”. Yeah all good, except if someone goes out with a head knock in the first 15 minutes we’d be ****ed if we lost another player.

If he’s selected, he’s fit to play. If he’s not, he’s not fit & that will be him done.

I was watching a replay of Port's most recent Preliminary Final (2014) to identify which players could cause us some trouble. After a thorough assessment, it's come to my attention we have to try to curb the influence of the following players:

  • Chad Wingard
  • Jared Polec
  • Jasper Pittard
  • Angus Monfries
  • Jackson Trengove
Stop them and we're half way there. The rest will take care of itself.
