There are plenty of AFL players that struggled to make it into a team at one Club, that go into another Club and have decent AFL careers.
Newchurch won't be one of them.

Every AFL club had the opportunity to draft Tariek yet they all passed on him leaving us to pick him up in the rookie draft as an Adelaide NGA Academy product. Obviously the other clubs could see his difficiences the same as us but we have him his chance as a NGA to work on the areas of his game he was lacking....obviously he was given work ons and everything suggests he hasn't met those standards.

Happy to bookmark this comment.
His best chance if we delist him which I think likely happens is to go back to the SANFL Roosters and continue to work on his game in the hope that he garners interest from AFL clubs down the track.

Showdown debuts in the past decade or so:

Cook R21 2021
McHenry R2 2020
Dougal Howard R2 2016
Rory Atkins R16 2015
Tim McIntyre R15 2012 - booted 2 goals from 6 kicks and never played AFL again...

In: Soligo, Max, Borlase, Laird, Newchurch, McHenry sub
Out: Rankine, Murray, Murphy, Sloane, Peds rest, Hately sub

Yes lots of changes but Soligo, Max and Borlase have been regulars. We need to a KPD so we will be debuting at least one player. Next is who we replace Rankine with, do we go with the headless chooks with zero goal sense or do we go for the guy who knows how to kick a goal, has speed and could give us a spark?

I can see Peds getting a rest given what we’ve done with Soligo and Max.

Bad game for Rach to be suspended for.

What's wrong with Newchurch? Likely to do well at the next level thanks to his speed. Comes off cat b this year, be nice to have seen him before delist or relist.
I've said he'll never play AFL .....but just to confirm my bias, I watched Newchurch closely last night in last weeks game

1. The guy simply has no aerobic capacity ......he spent 90% of the game, jogging up and down the WING ....and then for no reason would take himself deep fwd for a "rest" ????

2. Now you would think jogging thru the centre as often as he did .....he'd be able to get to a contest to receive .....or sprint to the fwd contest

But no .....at no stage does Newchurch look to get involved ......always caught between contests, simply because he would not get out of a jog

The occasions the ball was given to him ....he'd run hard with the ball & have a shot at goal .....literally a minute of pace, outside his jogging norm .....and he had to come off puffing

3. He simply does everything you don't ask of an AFL footballer ......with his pace, he should be linking up from contest to contest .....he should be hitting the packs at speed .....but he does neither, just jogs

Take it to the bank .....Newchurch is not playing AFL .....have a look at the SANFL game & see for yourself

Newchurch is not one of those players .....will struggle to consistently play at another SANFL club

If we were ever going to pick him a Showdown is not the right atmosphere to be doing that. He'd be overwhelmed.

Nek minnit: Newchurch is selected for the Showdown.

Mutineer: "The clubs done the right thing here, Newchurch will lift with the atmosphere of a Showdown"

I hope they do so once and for all posters will see why he's not debuted before now.

I'd say I'm the second most prolific watcher of sanfl games on this board. I've watched him plenty. Last year he showed plenty of dash and sprint and repeat efforts, not to mention goals. I highly doubt he lost that over another preseason, so I suspect he's working on stuff, at a guess running patterns to stay involved, for which he's been to the ground a lot. Part of the AFL skill set is also not stupidly wasting energy doing pointless running, so i'd say there's a bit of that as well. If he returned to pure
small forward role he'd be fine with his tank.

We dont need to try Newchurch..

We have mchenry and murphy…

the happy clappers favourite small forwards.

We are a soft pathetic club if we won't debut players in big games.

The whole "lets save the debut for North or West Coast" is soft**** bullshit.

Nankervis went ok against the quality of the Dees... with little warning.

No running patterns .....just jogs straight lines up & down the ground

He strikes me as a player whose been tasked to work on so many areas he has lost his own game. Going to another Sanfl club and playing a single role will probably show what he really has.

What amazed me was one time when he was between one of our players and an oppo that our guy mis-handballed to. He just completely stopped, looking disgusted, and let the oppo run away. Absolutely pathetic, and not a one-off.
