This barometer and downhill skier argument makes me laugh. They're the same. There is no barometer, there only exists downhill skiers. The test is how well do those players play in a loss. Is it similar to when they play in a win?
But the question is what is the direction of causality.
Player X plays poorly so we lose (ie. an influential player); or
We lose so Player X plays poorly (ie. downhill skier).

Oh I agree on the night, but every player deserves more than a week to show their wares.
It’s more an indictment on the PS of Gallucci and Poholke that these 2 discards could come in after being delisted and blow right past them.

I see no future for either of them but if they can keep more talented players honest as they have done so far then I guess they pay their way.

What do you mean in case of injuries? Only Knight unavailable and they both played. They’re not back up, they’re part of our best 22 plans.
They were recruited in the off-season for list balance ......at that stage CoVid never existed, and you have to allow for injuries to experienced players

We always said, moving along a lot of fringe players, left us thin for depth

Brad was recruited as a mid, we play him in the midfield. The only one failing Brad is Brad.

He's now 26. His body has failed him with injuries but he is not the dominant midfielder he should be and the type we need.
He panics and his disposal efficiency is average. He just doesn't hurt teams.

This isn't a question about how many mids we need for a game its about the mids we have.....and what we have doesn't cut the mustard.

Time to move on.
I bet if blight was coaching he would play off half forward and not 100% in the midfield. It’s called working with what you got and by trying something different you find something. I think he’s a suitable player to play half forward for 30% of his game time.

I remember Brad saying they were running 8-10 players through the midfield Rd1 and only lost by a kick. However went back to minimal players. Playing in the midfield resulted in a thrashing. I would say this game was an over correction thinking mids could play all game in midfield with the shorten quarters.

There you go. How hard is it to change up our midfield. To try it all you need to do is give Poholke a game on a flank on that well worn path.
One of crouch crouch sloane in with them and its a totally different dynamic.
Try and extract something out of what we already have.
ROB, Fog, Myles and Rory/Matt/Brad.
I'm sure the latter 3 will like the attention taken away from them every now and then.
It only has to work once and the opposition is statring to double guess themselves as to who is the real threat.
Exactly it’s working with what you got while about 8-10 of the talented young guys play nearly every game.

Good changes however I have ruled a line through Davis. Just not up to AFL standard.

Matt & Brad were the 1st & 3rd highest disposal winners on the ground. The problem is that Port had the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th highest disposal winners - and the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th. Adelaide only had 4 of the top-15 disposal winners in the game (Lynch & Laird were 9th & 10th). It wasn't so much a case of Matt & Brad being spanked, as too few other midfielders contributing. Our midfield was collectively spanked, because their midfield worked a whole lot harder than ours did as a group.
Unfortunately for us the 1st and 3rd highest disposal winners equated to the 13th and 32nd in meters gained....

To put it into context Brad Crouch had 20 more possessions then Darcy Fogarty, but only outgained him 21 meters. For all the "effort", he went at 6.16m per touch and still missed his target 56% of the time

Just goes to show how empty the 'total possession count stat' really can be.

Crocker I agree, likely to get more chances .....I'd give the guy an opportunity down back, he reminds of a poor mans Jeremy Howe

I'm the other way, he probably has enough to his game as a mid-forward to at least be a competent stop-gap and at best a role player in a very good side. Keeps going hard at the opposition keeps a goal a game average at a minimum and hey, he'll survive for a while. Gets it up to 1.5 goals per game and he'll probably get to retire instead of being delisted in 5-6 seasons.

He'll always be on a timer though, seeing mid-forward is a place you could put a very talented kid in a good side just to pump game time into him.

Galluci and Poholke need to be playing ahead of Crocker and Keays

In: Galluci. Poholke, McAdam & Scholl
Out: Atkins, Keays, Crocker & Kelly (INJ)

I agree, and I don't agree.

We need to get into a habit of giving players a block of games and working out if they have a future, instead of one or two then gone. That teaches us nothing. On that, I do not agree with dropping either Crocker or Keays. I do agree that likelihood is we'll end up getting more out of Gallucci and Poholke if we're willing to use them properly and not shoehorn them into the forward line.

I suspect those figures would look a lot better if their teammates were working hard to receive the ball... but sadly most of their teammates were (to all intents and purposes) watching the game from the grandstand.

I'd say Brad's game can be summed up by the fact that his direct opponent won the showdown medal.

One of the most ineffective, unaccountable 25 disposal games you'll see.

Same goes for his brother. They both rack up the stats, but their direct opponents win the game. A grand total of one inside 50 and four score involvements between them.

I haven't seen Stengle mentioned by anyone. He is as match fit as any. Crocker was not the worst Saturday. Deserves another game. Keys was putrid. Atkins and Murphy need a rest.

Stengle is serving a club suspension, for drink driving.

Also, I doubt any player needs a rest, after playing just 1 game in 3 months.

6.16m at 44%.... That means he’s missing every second handpass or sideways kick to.

As a mid if you’re missing your handpasses than it’s very hard to blame the guys around you

I didn't see the WC v GC game but sounds like Rowell might even snag a brownlow vote in his seconds ever game. Anyone ever manage to do it in their first game?
