Harsh, although Pyke had his flaws.
Prelim in 2016, GF in 2017 are achievements beyond a "total dud coach".

Excellent assistant but not great as a senior coach. His complete disinterest in the players themselves (unless they played golf) and their development played a large role in us going from top of the ladder to dead last within three years.

Pyke was a total dud coach. Fixing Kelly was easy. He just needed to be told he had no future if his first decision was to look sideways. And at the end of the day, a % of sideways options as a last resort is acceptable, but if you're incapable of seeing and executing a forward target 75% of the time then you're done. Pyke embraced and encouraged risk free sideways movement. He loved working slingshot too, but he loved safe and predictable also.
Pyke's major problem was that he couldn't make quick strategic changes in match. Grand final proved that. His recalcitrance to make change when his plan was not working was his major flaw. He is a good offensive assistant.

If he transitioned more youth into the team post 2017 he would likely still be our coach. He choose not too and was rightly shown the door.

Literally a week ago there was an article on AFL.com.au saying that Lynch was the best at his role in the entire league.
Lynch actually played well last week .....falling deeper into DEF ...holds his spot easily

I'm guessing:
1) not to play players who are injured
2) not to persevere with Frampton when all indicators are that he's spudded it up and should be dropped...?
OR it could be as much as "teaching" Berg a lesson on what Nicks wants improved .......it's in no-way saying Frampton is beter, because clearly he's a one trick pony ......mark & kick, and they're not exactly #1 woods by AFL standard

Nah mate; keeping a seriously underperforming player (Frampton) ahead of another (Berg) to teach the latter "a lesson" only punishes the team. Nicks could tell both what he wants improved and omit both in favour of a rookie like Thilthorpe who needs to be exposed to AFL speed and pressure.
(... "not exactly #1 woods by AFL standard" is right, though, and bloody funny :laughv1: . Retaining Frampton makes no sense to me at all)

Generally teaching players a lesson these days leads to them asking for a trade while in contract. If he does leave and our plan is to play Frampton in the future it's a flawed plan.

Getting a bad feeling about this game.

No need to worry.

Things I want from this game:

Fogarty, Sholl and Shoenberg to build on last week.

ROB to continue building into some form.

Hamill to have a Sholl-like breakout game.

Provide a good, hard contest.

Optional:

Tex to kick another bag.

A win.

We don’t need to carry a 2nd ruck if they don’t fit into the best 22. Play Tex and Fog as KPF’s, drop Frampton, and the mids can bank on losing rucks for the 8.5 mins that ROB isnt on the ball.

It’s important we don’t panic about the Freo tall forwards and go taller in defence

Freo likely win the midfield battle. It might be close except we are missing Sloane and Crouch so they have a significant edge in personnel

So how do we get the ball forward? Unlikely to be through midfield dominance. It’s going to come into our D50 quite a lot.

We need the smaller defence so that we can use our greater run (and their comparatively limited forward pressure) to transition from D50 to F50.

Go tall in defence means we are banking on a winning midfield, and the odds there aren’t in our favour given the respective personnel.

Imagine if we still had Greenwood. Exactly who we need to replace Frampton. Could relief ruck, assist in midfield and take some contested marks up forward.
I do get a laugh from much of the self flagellation on this board, but I found this one a baffling call.

Sure Frampton isn't a mid, but he'd be better in both other aspects than Greenwood. That's not bagging Greenwood. But he's just not what you are suggesting he is or could be.

Indeed. However, I'm afraid I have to agree with 1970 on this one: if Lynch is injured, he should not be playing at all. We don't need to carry injured players this year.
Completely agree with that.

No, he needs to learn to do what people post on BigFooty.

Unless their forwards can mark. Then we might be in a bit of trouble with a smaller backline. 😀

I think the RT remaining in the sanfl for the time being is a form and match fitness issue more than him “being worse than EH and BF”..

lad just looks like he needs to work on his match fitness and polish. Let him build it in the sanfl.

i just think the club has simply decided “whats the rush?” When it comes to Riley..

and its probably the correct option. Why rush him? The club is in rebuild mode and we are looking at a player who they hope to have performing for them for the next 10 to 15 years..

I don't agree

So at a guess I’d say Murray in for Kelly and Hatley is replacing Mookay as the medical sub?

Fairly uninspiring. Worrell you’d think might be getting a bit disillusioned? I mean what else does he need to do.
Ah the old line of Worrell being disillusioned, didn’t hear that enough last season 🙄. Murray is the better Kelly replacement for the Freo game. I can’t see Hamill playing a full season without requiring a rest, so Worrell’s opportunity will come soon.
