I'd love to see McGovern at CHB instead of Otten also but I can't see Pyke doing it, especially with Tex under a cloud. The best we can hope for is mid game Gov gets pushed back but instead of playing loose, I'd like to see how he goes against an opponent as well.

Personally, I'd be happy for Tex to have a week off to keep training but not risk the hammie, get him right for the Showdown. If Sloane is ready, he comes back in but between he, CEY, Greenwood they have some more forward time in Tex' absence...all very good overhead.

Betts in, Poholke out surely a given even if not a direct positional replacement.

Kelly for Mackay a good move also...I applaud Mackay's defensive work last game but in the end Kelly can handle bigger bodies as many have said. Who would we rather have on Robbie Gray? Simple answer...despite Kelly being below his 2017 level so far, I'd back him long before I'd trust Mackay on a decent forward.

The biggest issue I have noticed with DMAC is when he takes a mark and doesn't play on straight away he always goes back on his mark and takes his full time before he then just kicks long down the line. He very rarely moves the ball quickly to a short option 15-20m away to keep the momentum going. I think it comes down to the fact that he knows his limitations and doesn't trust himself with the short kicks. This hesitation often gives the opposition time to push numbers back and set up their zone and then the kick down the line is always to a contest.
If Mackay was a 20 game player you would look at his start to 2018 and call it very promising, with some negatives to work on still.

Unfortunately, the fact is he is a veteran and has reached 'peak Mackay', which this year is probably a 6-6.5/10 AFL player. I love his endeavour but we can do better.

I dont know about that man, I feel like he plays on a normal amount by the eye test, maybe even a bit more then most of the guys in our backline. Do you have any stats to back that up?

It might be a trait that bugs you so you notice it more then most people, and because its DMAC you are looking for it specifically. I know i'm a bit unfair when it comes to CEY and his Fumbles. He probably only fumbles 4 times a game, but to me it seems like 40 because of how much it infuriates me!

It's called "confirmation bias".

So it is, good from you Vadar.

That's actually not a bad little therapeutic sub thread we could do one day. Everyone get their Confirmation Bias's out in the open.

Another 1 for me would be Milera never running hard enough when he didn't have the ball. One that he seems to be disproving this season in a big way!

Milera has been one of the surprise packets this year, showing significant improvement in all the areas where I was previously critical of his performance.

Hampton, on the other hand, has lived down to expectations.

I think I saw hampton play 1 half of AFLX this year before I realised AFLX was the worst thing ever. So I really cant give him a grade. So far he's an incomplete which does not bode well for a guy whose job a pretty much on the line based on this seasons play

This m-i-g-h-t be right --- do you have any extra info/stats, please?
I think the problem might be that the oppo are more likely to score on the turnover if it starts in Mackay's hands rather than Kelly. I like Mackay who reminds me of Tyson Edwards build- and personality-wise, but Dmac's good work is often nullified when he butchers the ball. I just don't know that Dmac's zero nett effect is good enough :(.

No stats. But I rate Mackay. I think he is overpaid, but I am glad we have him. There is no doubt in my mind that he is better going forward than Kelly. But I think Kelly is a great defender so we would most likely lose something not having him in the team. But I definitely prefer Milera off the half back now. Another 10-15 games there and I think he is going to really add something that Mackay simply doesn’t have the weapons for.

I don't think Hampton has attended class enough to even receive a grade. He's always injured.

Unless your expectations were for him to continue to be injured. In which case, he's right on par.

Because DMAC isn't a loose man in defense. He's usually manning up on an AFL quality small/med forward. When he gets the ball its usually at full pace with a guy whose job it is to provide forward pressure hot on his hammer. If he stops and props he risks giving away a free kick inside forward 50.

Plus SANFL and Amateur intensity is not even close to AFL intensity. Chalk and cheese!
It might be selective memory loss, but I don't recall ever seeing him evade anyone, even at SANFL level. He hasn't been in defence all of his career, and many other AFL defenders, even ordinary ones, seem to have this skill anyway. It's not his position, it's not just not in his armoury

I'm pretty torn on selection from a selfish point of view. It'll be my first time in 4 years seeing the boys play in Adelaide, so I'd love to see Eddie, Tex and Sloane in person a jumper that isn't white, mustard yellow or some 4 year olds finger painting, even though that might not be the best thing in the long term.

It'll be interesting to see who gets through fitness testing.

Based on the comments from Pkye that I've read, I see only Eddie playing this week.

I didn't say he never plays on I said that when he doesn't or if he can't he quite often holds the ball up longer than he should and then ends up just going for the long option down the line. I have just noticed this with him more than others. But you are right I probably notice it more as I am looking out for it. He might not do it as much as he used to.

I agree that he has had a great start to the year and has come a long way in the last 12 months though.

It's called "confirmation bias".
It's also called "selective inattention":
- attentive to your pet players when they do good
- inattentive to your whipping players when they do good

or the reverse of that:
- attentive to your whipping players when they do bad
- inattentive to your pet players when they do bad

If Tex doesn't play this week will be a big test for Jenkins.

Last week it was very noticeable in the 3rd quarter when GC had a run on that there was ZERO leadership on field - especially in the forward line. Everyone went in to their shell. Its exactly what you can't do. No point being up and about and vocal when it is going good. Real leadership is being able to do that and lift your team when it isn't going your way.
Jenkins and Lynch need to lift that part of their game (as do many, many others - see 2017 GF for examples).

I looked for a fantasy thread (briefly) and couldn't find one.

Sorry for the SC question, but I was interested in thoughts on Murphy's chance of a game some time in the next month.

Cheers.
I like Murphy, but the answer is probably unlikely. Betts is due back this week. Knight and (particularly) Gallucci have stepped up Murphy's absence. He showed a bit, but Gallucci has definitely shown more. Hard to see him pushing past those 3 players for another game in the short-term future.

Milera has been one of the surprise packets this year
Yes, surprised me, too.
He got the 10 votes in the AFLCA this week, B.O.G., good on him:
""ADELAIDE v GOLD COAST
10 Wayne Milera (Adel) 5-5
5 Tom Lynch (Adel) 3-2
5 David Swallow (GC) 3-2
4 Matt Crouch (Adel) 4-0
4 Daniel Talia (Adel) 4-0
1 Rory Atkins (Adel) 1-0
1 Richard Douglas (Adel) 1-0 "" (I can't see any other vote combos)
He has a chance to make that HB poz his own, at least until Smith returns.
Edit: I'll bet Pyke gave Talia the 4 votes, Dew-Crouch)
