We didn't play Rutten when all three played against us earlier this year - pretty sure Shaw took Patton while Talia smashed Cameron and Hartigan took Boyd. Can LT take one of them if Boyd plays? Similar height/weight to Shaw but probably better defensively than Shaw. He played well yesterday, I'd hate to see him dropped after one game.

I don't think otten was in the side either.

Big opportunity next week, we need to show we understand that 100% is the level all games require.

Looked at the ladder - see those around us and how the draw favours us:

Wow looking at who our opponents play the GWS game is a must win. We can get a game up on West Coast and Bombers and then break even with GC and the Roos. This Port win set us up nicely really.

It's extra important because the week after, when we have Hawthorn, North and Gold Coast should both win:

North vs St Kilda (Hobart)
Bulldogs vs Gold Coast (Cairns)
Brisbane vs West Coast
Essendon vs Collingwood

Who knows what Brisbane will do. Collingwood usually have Essendon's number anyway.

You don't make changes after that performance. That would be foolhardy to mess with a winning combo. Sends the wrong message. This may save Reilly but as I said before he may be the exception.

You're flipping joking.
So if Dangerfield, Sloane and Betts were out this week and we won, you'd suggest they hvae a run in the 2s?

What a moronic point of view. Kerridge will be vital in shutting down Ward next week against GWS. He should 100% play.

Tough night at the selection table though.

In: Kedge, Mackay, Hendo
Out: Dangerfield (rest), Reilly, Porps

What did Dangerfield do in the last few minutes? Ankle? Was limping massively.
Was def upper leg. He twisted and fell in a stoppage - sounds weird but it was kind of a twisted thigh/hip - I know that's physically impossible but that's what it looked like

Yeah but then a few minutes later he ran onto a ball in the 50 and looked a lot better, not 100% but 10x better than what he looked when he got the injury.

Just out of interest...

Has there ever been the level of competition for spots that we have this year?

Genuinely some good players are going to miss when we have best 22.

Considering from todays side we have M Crouch, Hendo, Laird, Kedge, Rutten, Grigg, Mackay sitting on the sidelines.

What I would do (fully aware that it won't happen):

Out:
Dangerfield (rest / various injuries), Walker (as stated by Sando a few weeks back, the 6 day breaks mean he needs to miss a game and this is clearly the game), Reilly (omitted), Lyons (tough on him, but that's 2 games in a row as sub which is a selection death sentence)

In:
Mackay (he's done nothing to get dropped and only missed due to concussion), Laird (presuming he'll be right - he's best 22), Grigg (we need those footskills like a fat kid needs cake), Atkins (chuck him in as sub and give the kid a taste)

Sub:
Atkins

* Henderson gets ONE more run in the SANFL before returning for the Hawks game
** Dangerfield gets a week off to enjoy non-stop ice baths before returning for the Hawks game
*** Porps and L Thompson (and Martin), despite nobody on planet earth really believing they are best 22, get rewarded for legitimately contributing to a great victory today
**** It's harsh, but Truck just can't really play unless we're playing against a slow behemoth forward line. Deserves a farewell game, but against GWS? No.
***** Reilly - no longer AFL standard
****** Kerridge - sounds like he could do with an extra week off
******* Richard Douglas - on notice. Is woefully out of form.
******** Seems pointless bringing Matt Crouch in when he'd likely be dropped the following week (again).

B: L Thompson Otten Brown
HB: Smith Talia Jaensch
C: Mackay Douglas Sloane
HF: Lynch Jenkins Wright
F: Betts Podsiadly Martin

R: Jacobs S Thompson B Crouch

Int: Grigg, Laird, Porplyzia, Atkins

Hopeful ins for the Hawks game would then be:
Dangerfield (freshened up), Walker (freshened up), Kerridge, Henderson

For four of (depending on performance against GWS):
Atkins, Porplyzia, L Thompson, Martin, Grigg, Podsiadly

I understand that essentially 'resting' Walker and Dangerfield in the same game may be viewed as not treating GWS with the respect they deserve, but both of them are absolutely crying out for it, and the blokes coming in for them will all be hungry to perform.

What will probably happen:
In:
Mackay, Laird

Out:
Lyons, Walker
Can't do it. Don't underestimate GWS at home. If it was at AO we could get away with it but not at their home ground. We absolutely must win this game. In fact every game we play from now on is critical. Can't rest players

As much as some want to, no way can we drop Martin. As some have said, not elite and polished, but 1%ers are great, and has a big ticker which is needed to keep the others in our team honest. LT doesn't deserve to be dropped either. I just can't see how Truck comes back in now, with LT and Hartigan better options. Although, that said, Reilly is the obvious one to drop, and LT to take his place as that floating defender.

Good point, Martin was very valuable in the second half, did a lot of unrewarded work from hard running filling spots to stop the slingshot Power play. Thought he also had a good game against the Bombres as well in that same style.

We can't underestimate GWS at home, especially on our form this year.

Kerridge is an almost certainty to have another week off from what they said about his "hot spot". Calf strains are always iffy so i'd expect Laird to miss again also. I'd hope they don't pick Rutten, he should only be picked when there is an obvious match up.

On form the only player you'd even consider dropping is Martin or Reilly (not necessarily just from last night, but from the last few games). Porplyzia and LThompson were late inclusions so you'd expect they may also go out, even though they were important last night.

What I'd like:

OUT: Porplyzia, Reilly
IN: Mackay, Henderson

He said on 5doublecrow this morning it was an ankle and that he will be ok.
Danger reminds me of this guy sometimes.

Tough week for selection thats for sure. As DABM said we looked so much better contested with Mackay not out there. After watching yesterdays game I want to see more of yesterday. Otten was awful in the first half, as was Reilly. Change those two and I'll actually be surprisingly confident of upsetting the Hawks in two weeks time.

Out: Reilly, Otten
In: Henderson, Hartigan
*possibly Kerridge in Porps if fit

OUT: Reilly, Porps
IN: Henderson, Mackay

GWS have the big forwards to contend with also…be very tempted to drop Otten for Hartigan.
I agree that Hartigan/Rutten should come in for this game as the backline we had Sunday is too small for most sides. I would play Rutten though.

Also Otten surely plays before L.Thompson. As good as L.Thompson was on Sunday, Otten has been just as good all year.

Really liked porps game. Showed the composure and class under pressure that we really missed.

Some of his decision making was outstanding.

Also loved Luke Thomson's game. His ability to play on talls and Small's was invaluable. His run for a key defender is something we need more of. Would be losing nothing by keeping him instead of Reilly. He could easily play that 3rd tall better.

There were a few key plays in the last quarter that Lyons showed exactly what is great about him. Has the ability to slice though a contest and deliver cleanly. Exactly what we need.

Out: Reilly, Martin
In: hartigan, Cameron

North have about 10% on us so that suggests they'll have to suffer a pretty hefty loss whilst we'll need a pretty big win ourselves. Gold Coast and Collingwood is as 50/50 as it gets and it'd be preferable if Collingwood do win that given GC's percentage in comparison to ours.
I don't believe the hype around Collingwood and wouldn't be all that surprised if they drop out of the 8 by the end of the season.

I don't get the calls for Hartigan to come back in. Imo, he's been rather poor defensively and only hasn't been exposed more due to him playing on the 3rd tall given he was in the side with Rutten for many games this year.

When I went to the Dogs game this year he was terrible defensively against Campbell, his body work/positioning was very poor which lead to Campbell killing it in the first. Thankfully for us, the Dogs didn't use him again as a target but he certainly had the better of Hartigan.

I'm sure he can improve on that given he's still young, but there are calls to drop L.Thompson (I only got to see the last q of the game but he was good from what I saw) since it's believed he will get out bodied. But as big as Hartigan is, I don't really have any more confidence on him beating a big bodied forward assuming the forward knows how to use his body given what I've seen from him this year.

Can't make a comment about L.Thompson as a KP defender yet but I'd like to see us try it. Put Talia on the bigger guy and give Thompson the other one, lets see whether he has what it takes to be a KP defender of whether he's just another 3rd tall defender option for us.
