What’s frustrating is seeing players like vandermeer get multiple chances after crap games and then players like west get banished to the vfl for half a year after one quiet game . It was the same with hannan gowers mcomb etc
It’s been evident for years that Bevo no longer picks teams on merit. You’re either one of the players he loves or a player he doesn’t like.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall in these MC meetings. Surely the other coaches aren’t on board with team selection as it stands.

Out of interest, which players over the last 5-6 years are the ones he hates and the ones he loves? In your view?

Obviously you don't believe he plays favourites. Obviously you think team selection has been fine. All things going swimmingly.

Seems appropriate...

McComb, Hannan, Vandermeer, McNeil, Roarke Smith, Tim O'Brien and basically any of the VFL or below standard 'project players' he thinks he can magically turn into superstars.
Ahead of Cleary, Riley West, Mitch Wallis, Mathew Boyd annd now Jack McCrae among others who never really got a go, who had to make way for these hacks.

Thanks Snarls.

Pretty damning of the team (and MC) that Daniel has 9th most pressure acts despite playing only about 40% of the match.
I think one of our biggest issues (which goes all the way back to the 2021 GF), is that we don't have enough players that have the ability to the difficult things and the 1%'s that drive successful teams. Of the 23 that played on the weekend, how many could fall in that category? I've only got Bont, Libba, Harmes, Weightman, Naughton, West, Richards & Jones.

We have a lot of skilled but too 'nice' players.

Macrae more than just fitness.

Going through an evolution (he loves throwing this out there)

Named Gallagher and Sanders as those that have made it difficult for Macrae and CD to be in the team.

Said selection was not an issue nor the reason for the Melbourne loss.

Darcy will play, non-commital on who will be out until after todays training, but won’t be a small/medium.

Naughton won’t go back and something about him not being 100% last week that wasn’t realised till after the game.

Not that I like purple Barrett and I know he hates Bevo but he is spot on with this from the AFL website.

IF ...

Bevo has been many things in his nine years as an AFL coach ...

THEN ...

the stubbornness characteristic has been prominent throughout. He takes advice from no one. And the more that expert commentators tell him to play Aaron Naughton as a key defender, and to recall Jack Macrae from the reserves, the more staunch he is in keeping them where they are.

i think coaches can change with the times. Just look at Ross Lyon in his first stint with the saints he was so defensive and had boring game style. Now I wish we had the game style and players to be so attacking and daring as the saints.

We lack the speed and kicking skills of the best teams and as much as Bevo is stubborn and hate his selections he just does not have the players to be a top team in the modern game.

Partly this not Bevo's or Sams fault because we had to use our recent selections on quality talls in JUH, Sam and Jordan but other than Sanders we have not traded for or drafted the right smalls for the modern game. We would be in a better position if we had went for a small rather than Lobb.

Maybe Gallagher will be another.

Naughtons lack of run and poor defensive efforts make more sense if he wasn’t fit. He’s normally better than that.

Trying to get Macrae to play a different role and Jack’s resisting? Resents being usurped by an 18yo first-gamer?

The evolution comment was more in relation to the team as a whole, he raised the elimination finals exit in 22 and the missing finals in 23 and the need to evolve.

If only we actually say some kind of change in style and tactics.

Last sort of effective forward line that tall that I can recall is probably Adelaide 2017. Walker, Jenkins, Lynch and McGovern.

Lukosius is an excellent field kick so could probably play a little higher. It will be interesting how it plays out but I was surprised they decided to go for it. Could work out to our advantage if they don’t gel and get in each others way.
Lukosius can play wing. He’s another unicorn. Love the way he goes about it.

Smart play to give Walter his first go against a backline that will seemingly only play Jones as a high quality tall defender. If we don’t throw Darcy or Naughton back there I suspect they will rip us a new one. Unbelievable that in a team with as many quality tall players as we have we can’t find a way to boost our backline.

Macrae might have been banished from the CBAs but where is the recognition from the selection committee (i.e. Bevo) that he is effective at Mars regardless of the position he plays? Last year against the Crows in round 10, only 20% CBAs yet had 26 possessions and played well. Against the Giants in round 20, 52% CBAs and had 32 and was one of our best.
