Part of that was due to the fact that we cant sue the owners of our club which is the AFL. I would have thought that some discussion at the board would have revolved around how do we get ownership before 2028.

Why are you assuming our board want ownership before then?

I really don't think they want to be accountable to the members.

Is it that strange though?

For a well run club it would be strange, for us it is totally expected behaviour.

The "narrative" changes, week by week.
What's possible after Round 22 becomes impossible in Round 23 (and Rounds before that, looking ahead) and that's true for several teams. There's no 'true' or 'false' about it.
Essendon and Geelong were 'alive', before Round 23. Now they're kaput.
As of last Friday, 18/08/23, we needed to beat both Sydney and WC to finish 12-11, and have other results go our way to finish 8th.
At that time, we all knew we had to beat WC, contingent on also beating Sydney first.
Lose to Sydney ==> the narrative changes.
It's the outsiders, the Vics, the Crow-haters that will laugh at the Crows if they lose to WC this week.
The dynamic of the game is different, for sure. A win won't get us into the 8. That's gone.
The point is that you can’t judge a loss against the Eagles in this week’s dead-rubber as incontrovertible evidence that we ‘wouldn’t have made the 8 anyway’. There’s the undeniable maths that we needed 2 wins against the Swans and Eagles to make the 8, but with the win denied against the Swans by an AFL-sanctioned ****-up we’re not getting a live game in the final round, and the result (win, lose or draw) tells us nothing about how it might have played out under that alternative scenario. It doesn’t matter a stuff if the Crows lose to West Coast now, and that fact alone might change how the game plays out (and if we’re smart like Geelong and don‘t risk key players in a dead-rubber we move even further away from this equivalency argument).

And with finals gone there are far more tangible benefits in losing to the Eagles - pick 6 in the national draft being the most obvious. The Crow-haters will hate on us regardless. Put the external noise aside and do what’s best for the club going forward. Rest at least half a dozen of our better players. Don‘t risk Tex doing a ACL. Or Rankine re-injuring his hamstring. Shore up pick 6, start the pre-season fit, and consign 2023 to the bin. The sugar-hit we’d get from beating the worst Eagles side in history won’t sustain us for more than a minute after the siren goes in any case.

i have a dilemma….

I’ve been looking forward all year to taking my son to this game. And a few weeks ago when they scheduled it for a Saturday night was an added bonus.

I also want to support the boys.

But the last thing I feel like doing is going to the footy. Firstly because it’s so gutting and secondly I don’t want to give the **** in AFL house my hard earned.

Thoughts please?

I expect the players will be even flatter than we are
Apart from the fact he couldn’t pick sloane it sound like Nicks will be the one most up and about, and why not when you can hammer a team at home and take the meaningless 4 points!

I reckon you get a free pass if you’re taking your son to the footy. I try and curtail my deeply-grounded frustration with the club in front of my two younger kids (wasn’t easy on Saturday night watching Sloane’s woeful first-half efforts while Pedlar warmed the pine), and like you I question handing over any $$$ to the AFL. But some of my fondest childhood memories are going to the footy with my Dad, and it’s an experience that’s worth replicating as a now parent in my opinion. Gil and his minions have taken away a lot when it comes to enjoying football, but they shouldn’t be able to take away those moments you get with your kids at the footy. Stiff upper lip and do it for your son!

Another good reply, thanks.
John Olsen talked the talk on Monday, but whether he'll actively follow that up with the AFL (publicly or behind closed doors) is unclear.
I am doubtful.
If he is looking for compensation in the form of a better draw, Friday/Saturday night games, fewer games away to potato fields etc, he will have more leverage if we beat WCE this week.
Well, one would think . He'll be dealing with the AFL who will do the Crows as few favours as possible, if any. My gut feeling is that the Crows will get sfa from the AFL

You and others have made good points about losing ==> Draft Picks, and surgery for some players (although Tex/Rankine/anybody could get injured anytime :sneaky:).
That might be the only way to get any kind of benefit from the mess.

Best post I’ve read on BF!

Go and enjoy the footy with your boy.

Huh? Nicks barely mentioned him other than to say he wouldn’t play and why.

I hate that we’ve given Sloane another, but ya’ll are jumping at shadows now.
In the post-Trump world it doesn’t matter if what is stated is demonstrably bullshit….It’s the vibe.

I listened to the 16 minute press conference and went back and listened again. Sloaney was mentioned as part of a single sentence. ”McAdam and Sloane won’t be playing this week, Sloane has previously had a problem with his eye and we will not risk it……..”

Nevertheless, it was probably one of McTopG‘s more lucid posts.
