While I'm here just casually shooting the breeze, I thought I might just see if you folks can move along and do something more constructive.

I'll go do a bit of a cleanup (happy to leave good old-fashioned verbal jousting) but it'd be swell if you could stop tagging people you don't want into your team thread, and would be just generally nice if people would stop arguing over some week old bickering that we've already tried to deal with.

Round 5
Wazzas
v Gumbies FFC at Van Cortlandt Park

dFXxYLv.gif

Ned Ryerson and his fellow Gumbies made for a welcomed breath of fresh air this week.

What a sight for sore eyes the Gumbies were this week. The claymation nation delivered our most enjoyable week off the field so far this season, as we welcomed the purveyors of plasticine to the VCP for our Round 5 clash. Despite some early week drama that saw myself watching from the sidelines, what ensued was a lighthearted week of good banter, good tunes and good vibes in a refreshing change from an ordinary run of opponents to start off the season. The mid week song contest looks like it's here to stay, and we even had a faux zackah walkout after last week's sim shenanigans.

Well game day arrived after the eventful week, and boy did it disappoint. After an even first half in the wet, the Gumbies engine room got on top after the main break, as they held us goalless and slammed on six majors of their own. Despite winning the last quarter with two goals to the Gumbies' one, that 3rd quarter capitulation would prove to be the difference, as they would hang on to win comfortably by 34 points in an upset.

And so #thestreak came to an end after four weeks undefeated at the top of the ladder, as our first loss of the season threatened to signal a slide down the ladder we're only too painfully familiar with, only to be mercilessly saved from that sinking feeling by the Dees, whose loss sees us remain atop the ladder despite dropping our first game in Season 31.

Dour in defence - NaturalDisaster toiled manfully to hold Gumbies spearhead RodneyDangerfield to just 3 majors on the day, while collecting a handy 18 touches himself as the standout down back for us, leading the club in D50 rebounds for the match. For the second week running, vet TubbsFarquhar was impressive too, his 14 possessions and 4 marks saw him intercept multiple Gumbies forward forays.

Midfield maestro - Ruckman Test Tickle not only won the hitouts on the day with 11, giving us plenty of silver service for our mids, but he also bested his former Bears teammate Barrybran in the process, his 20 touches making him the clear standout big man around the ground on the day as he fought valiantly for us in the middle.

Fearsome up front - The return of Spanna_ reached a bit of a milestone this week, as he enjoyed his best outing for the club since rejoining SFA ranks in Season 31. His 21 touches and goal one of the more impressive performances on the day and he was lively up front for us. Full forward and vice captain harry000 was another dangerous avenue to attack for us, with four majors on the day, although it could have been more had he kicked straighter.

Round 5 was wet and miserable. Just like my ex.

Here's what the stats tell us about how we went:

w ladder s31 r5.JPG

The main call outs are:
  • kdavva74's clunking marks;
  • DockerDen5215's move to the midfield saw him pick up TheInjuryFactory's quota of frees for, so his free kick differential has improved from -7 to -3. He still holds the lead for most frees against with a couple of other offenders players;
  • The Half Back still really loves to hug people, and is ranked equal second in the league for doing so;
  • harry000's four goals sees him equal second on the Fred tally, one goal behind the leader. He's joint top in Behinds though, so straighten up harry FFS;
  • There were season-best games from Spanna_ NaturalDisaster & Lord_Flashheart
Still top of the table though so really who gives a flying?

Round 6 individual stats:

w ladder s31 r6.JPG

Hot takes:
  • toxic's best game since returning;
  • TheInjuryFactory leading averages in kicks & frees for despite playing one fewer game;
  • Freofalcon has the lowest free kick differential, because he's a giver;
  • Everything else stable.

Round 6
Wazzas
v Gold City Royals at The Golden Throne

If you know, you know.

Looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss at home, we hit the road for the toughest road trip in qooty, the reigning premiers the Royals at home in Gold City. Filthy and co looked to be shaking off the premiership hangover after a clutch win against a hot Bombers outfit, while we were licking our wounds after losing our first game of the year against the lowly Gumbies.

Another great week of the track saw us make the most of a quieter Royals showing than their rampaging S30 version, with the Coney Island song contest continuing to grow, and we all got a good laugh out of the week from gg and his resume, oh did we laugh.

Game wise, we pushed out to an early lead in the first quarter, as we doubled the Royals score to head into the first change 2 goals to the good, and despite a good tussle ensuing throughout the match, we were never headed, as we led at every break to register a comfortable 14 point win after giving up some junk time score in the final stanza with the heat already out of the contest.

So after a week prior of missed opportunity aqainst the Gumbies in Rd 5, we bounced back superbly this week to knock off the reigning premiers on their home patch, in an impressive return to form. It was a great all around performance across all lines, as we looked to cement our claim on top spot with a much needed win after losing percentage in last week's shock loss.

Dour in defence - TubbsFarquhar is having some season down back for us, as he once again led the defence with 17 possessions and 4 marks. Tubbs not only beat his direct opponent soundly on the day, but he also gave us plenty of drive off half back to continue his purple patch of form in Season 31.

Midfield maestro - Returning Wazza and former TFLUA Tiger medallist toxic was clear best afield on Sunday, as the swingman shifted onto the wing in the first quarter and put on an absolute clinic, in what was by far his best performance for the club since making his return for Season 31. Not only did he massacre Royals vet ShaunDuggan, but he led all players on the ground for possessions with 27 touches, and goals with a superb four goal outing.

Fearsome up front - On a tough day for the forwards against the quality Royals premiership backline on their home deck, second year star FootyGuy13 was the pick of the litter, with his lively effort going unrewarded but a forward's job is to kick goals or see goals kicked, and while he didn't trouble the scorers, he certainly saw plenty of goals kicked, with the midfield pushing forward and linking up with FG on several goal chains to show his influence on the match.
