Round Fifteen - Away vs The Phoenix

We were in some sh*t hot form coming into our trip to the Eyrie to face the TFKA the Whoreks, who were also flying (pun absolutely intended). Six wins and a draw in our previous eight games, knowing that one more win from our last three games would guarantee Qeptember action. The week was the quietest of the season though for both teams, so to say we were well rested for the game would be an understatement.

We took a quarter to get going, trailing by 4 goals to 1 at the opening break. In true English form, the opposition captain told us to mind the gap and unfortunately that's what we did, finishing with a 23 point loss. Thankfully most of the teams directly below us also lost, allowing us to retain fifth place on the ladder.

The centreline of FootyGuy13 (20 disposals/4 marks/3 goals), Elton Johns Wig (22 disposals/9 marks) & A Swallow (22 disposals/5 marks) along with pantskyle (21 disposals/5 tackles) were again industrious. Yours truly beat the all-SFA ruck, BEEG & Ambrose Burnside kicked three goals each and Piggy Smalls did a good job of quieting the Phoenix full forward after being moved to full back, keeping him goalless after a first half Michelle on NaturalDisaster

Round Sixteen - At Home vs The Bombers

We were still in a good position to make finals as we headed into the penultimate round of season 33, where the Babylonians came to visit. They're normally a rowdy bunch which led to our busiest match thread since round 11. Probably wasn't as busy as the Baghdadis were used to, but they had a million people locked up in Stalag 69 so swings and roundabouts.

As for the game, well the first quarter was good. We kicked three goals and restricted them to one. It was 70 minutes however before we kicked our fourth goal, around 10 minutes into the final quarter. The Bombers put kicked nine in that time, and ended up winning by 29 points. Our final score of 7.6 was the third lowest in Warrior history, a result which saw us drop from 5th to 7th on the ladder. The good news though was that with the Demons, Swamprats & Wonders also losing we were 1.5 games ahead of 9th spot on the ladder and, with one game remaining, had booked our spot in the top 8.

The standout Wazza on the fired was anthropomorphic robot monkey pantskyle whose 17 disposal/12 tackle/2 goal effort gave him BOG honours. BEEG was the leading goal kicker on the ground with three, despite being somewhat wasteful in front of goal. The back six of toxic NaturalDisaster Volbeat TubbsFarquhar Mofra & Freofalcon did well to keep the normally high-scoring Bomber forwards to 12 goals, while midfielders A Swallow (12 disposals/6 marks/5 tackles), FootyGuy13 (18 disposals/5 marks/1 goal), TheInjuryFactory (14 disposals/6 tackles) & Elton Johns Wig (15 disposals/3 marks) also tried hard.

Round Seventeen - At Home vs The Wonders

There was plenty to play for in our final round match vs the Coasters. Even though finals qooty was secured, a win for us and a loss for either the Bears or the Roys would give us a home elimination final. The Wonders had even more motivation - a win for them coupled with losses for the Royals, Demons & Swamprats would see them scrape into 8th place on the ladder, while a loss along with a win for the Furies would see the Wonders pick up the wooden spoon. The week was a bit of a non-event on our behalf given our sights were already set on next week, though fourteen of us were around to chuck rocks at our opponents.

As far as the game went, Volbeat kicked the first two goals early in the first quarter, and despite see-sawing that lead remained until three quarter time before the visitors kicked five goals to one in the last stanza to run out 11 point winners.

What did that mean for the final ladder? The Bears & Roys both won their matches so even if we won we weren't likely to get a home final. And even though the Furies had a massive percentage boosting victory over the Royals, the win meant the Wonders avoided the spoon. The Swamprats also lost, however a victory for the Mountain Men meant the Coasters missed out on finals by around 2.5%. Unluckeeee.

Best on for us this week was undoubtedly TheInjuryFactory thanks to a 23 disposal/10 tackle/ 1 goal effort with A Swallow (22 disposals/7 marks), pantskyle (13 disposals/11 tackles) & FootyGuy13 (17 disposals/6 tackles) also industrious. Volbeat added another two goals to finish with 4 which was the most for either team, while sophomore forward Snuffaluphagus was the only other multiple goal kicker.

Elimination Final - Away vs The Roys

We were back playing finals qooty after finishing the home & away season in 7th place, which meant a trip to the BJO to face the 6th placed Roys. We were as up and about as we had been in the previous couple of months, although a couple of super spammy Roys meant that out contribution to the match thread was a touch over a quarter of the total.

The game itself was a lot closer, possibly due to the rainy conditions. A couple of goals to TheInjuryFactory plus singles to BEEG and Elton Johns Wig gave us an early 20 point lead before Roy pegged it back to 7 points at the big break. Conceding 6 goals to 2 in the third was a bold strategy, however the rope-a-dope tactic nearly paid dividends as we kicked 5 final quarter goals to Roy's two to end up falling short by two single points. Two lousy steenkin points. Our campaign ended at this juncture leaving us still searching for the ultimate success, while the Roys went on to claim premiership glory. Stupid bloody game anyway.

Coach The Donald wasn't afraid to chuck the magnets around the board during the match, meaning we had a pretty even spread of performances. From the usual suspects of BEEG (4 goals), TheInjuryFactory (19 disposal/3 tackle/2 goals), Elton Johns Wig (19 touches/5 marks/1 goal), the wingers A Swallow & FootyGuy13 doing their thing and the ruckdog doing alright as well, to TubbsFarquhar going to ruck rover (a team high 22 disposals) and full back (some would say all-SFA worthy) NaturalDisaster moving forward and kicking two goals, there were many notable efforts.

Coach The Donald wasn't afraid to chuck the magnets around the board during the match, meaning we had a pretty even spread of performances. From the usual suspects of BEEG (4 goals), TheInjuryFactory (19 disposal/3 tackle/2 goals), Elton Johns Wig (19 touches/5 marks/1 goal), the wingers A Swallow & FootyGuy13 doing their thing and the ruckdog doing alright as well, to TubbsFarquhar going to ruck rover (a team high 22 disposals) and full back (some would say all-SFA worthy) NaturalDisaster moving forward and kicking two goals, there were many notable efforts.

Here's how the onfield and posting stats finished up for season 33. Sham-WOW!!!!!

Here's who did what:

We played a total of 23 players over the season, more than in previous seasons but still not a massive number;
Despite only playing six games, Lord_Flashheart had the highest time on ground percentage at 99.83%, while of those that played every game is was winger A Swallow who was the real ironman with a TOG % of 99.06, playing all but 17 minutes of the season;
Raveneyes became the second Wazza to hit 250 games in persimmon, and sits one game off the Coney Island games record of 255 that zackah currently holds;
Wundercow Moo is the overall games holder among the team, reaching 350 games in season 33;
Five Wazzas registered hitouts this season, whether they liked it or not;
A Swallow had the second most disposals in the league this season, so comfortably led all comers at Coney Island. His centreline partners in crime FootyGuy13 & Elton Johns Wig were also prolific ball winners;
FootyGuy13 just pipped Elton Johns Wig for most marks;
pantskyle & TheInjuryFactory went 1-2 in the tackle count, and the other way around for frees received while A Swallow & Volbeat tied for frees conceded;
21 Wazzas kicked at least a goal while 10 hit double figures. Full forward BEEG led the way with 64, TubbsFarquhar had a hefty 22, rookie Ambrose Burnside kicked an outstanding 20 while Piggy Smalls had a great season on a half forward flank with 18 snags (all beef in case anyone was worried about his over-commitment). Dinsdale Elton Johns Wig Snuffaluphagus TheInjuryFactory FootyGuy13 & yours truly were the others to hit double digits, while another rookie in Mesc went super close on 9 (if only he converted in the match where he kicked 1.7!);
The only player to achieve 100% scoring accuracy was adogsfan5 who ended up on 2 goals straight;
A Swallow led the way for DT & Exie points. Another five players apart from Swallow got over 1000 DT points (Guy, Bob, Wigs, TIF & pants), while another four (Piggy, BEEG, Dins & Tubbs) reached over 1000 in Exie things.

Many thanks to NaturalDisaster for collating the posting stats for the past few seasons! Here's how they ended (with the exception of the EF):

In terms of overall posting, we had 22 individual posters over the course of the season which is a huge result with the quality being reflected in 14 posters receiving beez votes, the most of any club! The 22 who posted averaged 238.3 posts each, which in turn averaged 13.3 times per match.

Good evening everybody and welcome to Coney Island’s Night of Nights – the sixteenth running of the Frankston Rover Medal Ceremony!

We have plenty to celebrate in what was very much a transitional season at Van Cortlandt Park. Like binary numbers, it was all or nothing with us. We started with a bunch of defeats, then went unbeaten for the middle half of the season, then finished with another four losses. This meant we Bradbury'd our way to an elimination final in a return to finals qooty for the first time since season 31's prelim, eventually falling two points short against the eventual premiers. Statistically it was a very even performance across the board, which may well play out in tonight's Frankston Rover count.

A lot went down off the field as well. It started with a recruiting bonanza, with reigning beez Medallist Elton Johns Wig swapping Furies magenta for Warriors persimmon, reigning Dragons B&F A Swallow flying into town, the introduction of promising new talent Mesc Ambrose Burnside PhatBoy & adogsfan5 to the team, and the return of the proverbial son in pantskyle who returned after a couple of seasons at Mount Buller. Like the on-field performances, many hands made light work in a season which saw a league high 14 posters receive beez votes. It just goes to show that despite all the noise and bluster that sometimes gets the attention it sorely craves, at the end of the day quality will always eclipse quantity.

In a final note to highlight the transitional nature of the season, it was also the first time since the end of season 27 that TheInjuryFactory was not the captain of Coney Island. As the longest serving skipper in Warriors history TIF had achieved almost everything there is to achieve in the Sweet FA, and even though he no longer holds the proverbial reins, his influence is still felt.

Gumbies FFC 13.5 (83) defeated Coney Island Warriors 11.8 (74)

The draw gave us a pretty cruisy opening round on paper, as we visited the House of Gumby to play a plasticine host who traditionally are slow starters to a season, particularly given they've lost their last seven or so opening rounds. I didn't actually pay attention to the exact number but that was the gist of it I think. This one had a bit extra though, as former Coney Island wunderkind was suiting up in Gumby blue for the first time and, in the process, was trying to impress his new teammates by pumping up his already heroically-sized head. Along with some inaccurate kicking on our behalf, the hosts seemed to work with this bravado on game day as they edged us out in a close contest to win their first round one game in 12 seasons by nine points.

We had our chances, having more scoring shots and the run of play for period of the game as we hit the front halfway through the final quarter. However conceding three late goals in a close contest is never the best strategy. Despite losing to the team that hadn't won an opening round game for 46 seasons, the fact that we were the best of the rest has us in seventh spot on the ladder at the end of the opening round, which is a place higher than this time last season.

The half back line of Volbeat Raveneyes and Lord_Flashheart formed a solid wall averaging 15 disposals and 5 marks each, only for the Gumbies to kick over it. Meanwhile coach The Donald made the bold decision to replace former all-SFA fullback NaturalDisaster with pantskyle which, in retrospect, wasn't the masterstroke Don thought it would be.

The new look centreline of A Swallow Elton Johns Wig & FootyGuy13 toiled manfully, averaging just under 19 touches and 6 marks each in trying conditions. Reigning Mobbs medallist TheInjuryFactory tackled his guts out, while the wet weather suited the ruckmen.

Up forward it was Mofra and Piggy Smalls who handled the conditions the best, booting three goals each. Yours truly chipped in with a couple while Elton Johns Wig kicked a consolation goal at the death. Reigning Wooshette medallist BEEG struggled however with one goal four behinds to his name.

Finally the rookies eased into their work gently, with PhatBoy the best of the quartet after coming off the bench.

Coney Island Warriors 11.5 (71) lost to Gold City Royals 15.17 (107)

It was our first opportunity to enjoy the comforts of home, as we welcomed the Gold City Royals to Van Cortlandt Park. It was also the first time that our new recruits in A Swallow Elton Johns Wig Mesc PhatBoy Ambrose Burnside & adogsfan5 got to experience the unique hospitality of the Whore Tree, and for many it did a power of good.

The week itself was pleasant enough. There was some brotherly love on display between pantskyle and The Filth Wizard , there were plenty of enjoyable cameos while Royals captain PMBangers was busy preparing his CV for his tilt at administrative duties. But the scene stealer this week, like in previous encounters, was the Vice Chancellor of Tully University of Technology himself, grumbleguts. From locking his son in his car boot to drinking out of a Windex bottle, life in his class is never dull.

On the qooty field the Royals hit the front in the first minute and never looked back, ending up 36 point victors. Inaccuracy from the visitors meant it could have been worse, and with four goals on the trot in the final quarter we got within 15 points however we spent our energy getting that close as the Royals booted the final three goals of the game.

So for a second season in a row we drop the first two games to be stone motherless on the ladder. We bounced back to win our next two however (including a win away to this week's opponents), will history repeat itself?

Coach The Donald was busy again in shuffling players around mid-game. The entire fullback line was swapped, with NaturalDisaster and adogsfan5 ending up in forward pockets while PhatBoy replaced FootyGuy13 on a wing and kicked his first goal in the process! Veteran CHF Raveneyes also continued a rich vein of form with 19 disposals and 8 marks.

Midfield recruits Elton Johns Wig and A Swallow found plenty of the ball and talismanic rover TheInjuryFactory continued to plug away under the packs, but it was the returning pantskyle who was BOG for us after amassing 25 touches and a heroic 11 tackles, while up from BEEG improved his output on round one with four goals, joining revitalised half forward Piggy Smalls in leading the goalkicking tally. Freofalcon, Elton Johns Wig & the returning TubbsFarquhar also hit the scoreboard.

Sin City Swamprats 22.13 (145) defeated Coney Island Warriors 19.16 (130)

There was optimism in the air as we travelled Underground to face the Sin City Swamprats in a bottom of the table clash that gave us a decent chance to register our first win against a team we have done well against in recent seasons. We also had the chance to test the hypothesis where calling a milestone a significant event will change our fortunes in the game (for those playing at home - we lose most milestone games). It was a very low key week with posting numbers reflecting this, although there was still an even spread of contributors which is great to see. Despite one of their posters trying to start a fire early on without knowing how to light a match, there were some decent interactions in there - notably pants and ShaunDuggan playing off each other, Kennedy Parker proving what the SFA missed in the past season or two, Ant Bear proving he's still alive and philreich making philreich noises. They've also found one with the Gravy Train.

As far as the game itself went, it was another case of the opposition hitting the lead early and keeping it for the duration, despite several spirited fightbacks. Who knew that being five goals down at quarter time would be detrimental to a team's success hey? We had the third highest score of the round which was fantastic, unfortunately our opponents had the highest. We even had the same number of scoring shots as the Rats, however inaccuracy proved to be the deciding factor. Anyhoo, it was the same margin as the the 2013 AFL grand final so I'm particularly triggered which leaves us as still the strongest team in the competition and, along with the Dragons, the butt of those stupid Owen gags.

Our numbers on the whole were pretty good. 12 of us had at least 15 disposals, 7 of us has at least 5 marks and 12 of us kicked at least one goal. Highlights for mine were the form of the centreline, with FootyGuy13 A Swallow and Elton Johns Wig all adding to already impressive seasons, the work of the halfback line of Raveneyes Lord_Flashheart and Volbeat for providing an impenetrable yet short wall (with TheInjuryFactory also putting his finger in the proverbial dyke after a decent shift in the guts, Freofalcon being moved to ruck rover and showing the sort of form that earned him a Mobbs Medal like 47 seasons ago, BEEG finding form up front with five goals, the two goals from milestone man TubbsFarquhar and the efficiency of one-kick-one-goal Mofra up front, and debut goals from rookies adogsfan5 and Mesc. The former kicked two goals in a row after being moved to the forward line to give us some much needed momentum, while the latter had an extraordinary eight (8) shots on goals and provided great forward pressure which resulted in goals for his teammates. Some would point out that one goal and seven points is not a good day at the office, but glass half full Bob says that equals two goals one point. And just like horny uni student me on a cheap drinks Thursday night at Coronado's in Claremont in the 1990's, if you're having shots you'll have a chance.
