1999 Prelim, Essendon loses by 1 point to Carlton, Carlton get demolished by North in the GF

Essendon had played North twice that season;

First game in Round 2, Essendon won by 35 points.

Second game in Round 17, Essendon won by 26 points.

Flip that Prelim result and there's a pretty good chance Essendon win that 1999 Grand Final.

Without that close loss though, would they have dominated 2000 without the memory of '99 spurring them on or would they have been complacent?

Corey McKernan has actually said as much. As soon as the prelim final siren went, he knew North would be premiers that year. He said Essendon was the best side that year by far.

Not sure how anyone can say that. They didn't kick a goal in the last quarter.
I did mean 09 in the broader sense of the whole year, but I also think that if you played that game over and over, they’d win 7 or 8 in 10.

They controlled territory but just couldn’t take their chances for whatever reason. There were points of that game where they should have been 5 goals up on gameplay, but for a combination of bad luck, good defending and bad conversion.

??????
We played you twice in the 1990's final series and won by 10 goals and then 8 goals in the GF. You did not even get close to winning. The draw had nothing to do with it.
Due to the draw we didn't play for 3 weeks before the 2nd semi final. We were underdone and Collingwood managed to build momentum. We did win the 2 h&a games v Collingwood in 1990. Essendon were stiff, we were a clear favourite going into the finals but can't do much about bad luck. Extra time was brought into all finals bar the GF the following year in response to what happened in 1990.
