Some others are engaging in a discussion around the question ‘What could the criminal justice system be doing to help avoid incidents like this happening in the first place?’. It’s a very reasonable discussion to have.

Your ‘just lock the scumbags up’ is one possible answer. Fair enough. But be careful what you wish for. There are societies that are more inclined to do it that way, but they also have higher taxation and/or worse government services to pay for the higher incarceration rates. And they have far higher rates of false imprisonment. And they don’t have a lower crime rate.

I lived in America for a while. In the area we lived, at least one person was shot every day. Seeing that level of violence all the time... I have a mate who was speared thru the leg for insulting an elder of his nation. Cost him a high level rugby/league career. He accepts his punishment, especially now decades later as he's becoming an elder of his nation. Still spins me out but ...

Look the thing is that you need to remember they're human and the punishment you dish out will have its own karma (ie a cause and effect relationship with events in the future).

I was in a siege once. Held hostage, threatened at knife point. People (kids) I was with were doused in petrol. The guy went to prison, got out 20 years later and then killed his partner with an axe to the head.

How many people were saved for locking him up for 20 years? No “social” program was fixing him.

Prison is there to keep monsters off the street. If the guy I spoke of stayed in prison as he should have, there would be one less victim of domestic violence

the vast majority of people in prisons are not those people

like the vast majority

there are people in prison for unpaid fines because they are homeless
and I don't mean one or two
