Murphy hasn't been tagged his entire career like Cotchin and plays more outside. Don't get me wrong he's still gun but the knocks on Cotchin are a bit inflated and exaggerated.

Just as saying Trent has always been tagged is a bit inflated and exaggerated. Deledio has often drawn the tag as he's the most damaging player on the Richmond list. Also there's virtually nothing between Murphy and Cotchin in clearance and contested stats, despite Murphy being more "outside".

Cotchin has underwhelmed for a vast majority of his career, ever since 2012 really. Murphy has been better, but not by much. However, if he were in a decent side during the beginning of his career, and was allowed to develop without the added responsibility, he'd be even better.

I hate Carlton and don't particularly mind Richmond but Murphy easily.

Murphy isn’t fit to tie Cotchin’s shoelace. Cotchin is the tougher, harder, more talented and more damaging player not to mention he is one of the best leaders in the competition.

Murphy is what most people would call a wasted high pick

Cotch has him beat pretty easily now in terms of accolades. Maybe before 2017 it was closer but now with a premiership captain honour on the resume, Cotch pulls further ahead.

2x B&F's for Murphy, 1x AFLCA and 1x AA - same as Cotchin

vs

3x B&F's (1 in a finals year), 1x Brownlow, and also 1 AFLCA and AA selection. Also a premiership captain and has more career Brownlow votes despite playing fewer games.

Lol. Well called. The yellow and black nuffs have arrived. And out gets furled the “premiership captain” arguement, as if playing for a better team makes him a better player. The stats are pretty clear, Cotch is still behind Murphy.
Mate you delusional if you think Murphy is anywhere near Cotchin .

The story tells itself. Don’t let the glint of light from the premiership cup blind you here. Cotchin plays in the better team. Murphy is the better player.
Cotchin in 2012 won a Brownlow in a team of similar quality to Carltons current team, this year he went to another level where his Captaincy was rated at a level similar to Voss by Leigh Mathews, he was rated 2nd best player in the finals series after Dustin Martin and his rise as a Captain came about by gaining less champion data type stats and more of the intangibles that drive teams to win a flag.

I was just reading the Yellow and Black book about how we went from 13th to a flag and there was a quote often attributed to Albert Einstein on the value of stats "not everything that counts can be counted. Not everything that can be counted counts."
Now Murphy is obviously a good player as your stats show, Cotchin is also a good player but a much better Captain, unfortunately CD type stats dont quantify great leadership.

Cotchins 2017 finals series (and 2017 season in general) ices it for now. He played with great hardness and leadership that it put him on another level. You can have your stats, we'll have Cotch on game impact.
