Stab in the dark at new numbers to be issued. Will guess that no player already on the list in 2023 'upgrades' their number and that Joey's 12 and Buddy's 23 are left vacant.

3 - Adams
4 - Grundy
12 - Vacant
17 - Jordon
23 - Vacant
31 - Hamling
33 - Green
39 - Snell
40 - Cleary
41 - Kirk
45 - Vacant

Can't see them putting Buddy's 23 back into circulation straight away, but if Joey's 12 is put back into use:

3 - Adams
4 - Grundy
12 - Hamling
17 - Jordon
23 - Vacant
31 - Cleary
33 - Green
39 - Snell
40 - Kirk
41 - Vacant
45 - Vacant

Torn on whether they give Kirk his old man's 31 which is available, or in fact if he even wants it straight away and any perceived extra pressure by doing so. Will assume he doesn't for now. And if The New Reg (Grundy) doesn't want a reminder of his time as a Magpie, could see him taking the 3 and Adams the 4.

I think it'd be cool for Cleary to get the number 12 if we decide to bring it back. A local kid who grew up supporting the club and is a hard, contested inside mid. Who is ever going to be more befitting of JPK's number than Cleary?!

Why not?

There are a handful of numbers I reckon have great historical, recency and emotional attachment *

They are numbers 11, 14* , 23 and 25. Excluded Goodes Number which I believe should be permanently retired.

11 should be worn by our craftiest small
14 by our prospective champion mid
23 by our most brilliant kpp
25 by our best ruckman

People care too much about the numbers , even 14 has been worn by some duds

I know. But I would be delighted if Rounds 25 was mainly associated with rucks and yep heaps of others have had distinguished careers in 25.

I am an old romantic and this includes about crossover between Sth and Sydney. I got a very small amount of joy seeing the 23 worn by Franklin and remembering Ron Clegg who wore the same number .

It will be interesting to see whether Indhi gets #31 (Dad's number).

It will be interesting to see whether Brodie Grundy takes #4 (his number at Collingwood).

I'm tipping Caiden for #3.

If those numbers turn out right, then I'll tip:

Green #17
Hamling/Snell #39 & #40
Jordon (or maybe Buller) #23
Adams #12

If Kirk takes his old man's 31 and Kennedy's 12 is still 'retired':

3 - Adams
4 - Grundy
12 - Vacant
17 - Jordon
23 - Vacant
31 - Kirk
33 - Hamling
39 - Snell
40 - Green
41 - Cleary
45 - Vacant

If Kirk takes his old man's 31 and Kennedy's 12 is back in use:

3 - Adams
4 - Grundy
12 - Hamling
17 - Jordon
23 - Vacant
31 - Kirk
33 - Green
39 - Snell
40 - Cleary
41 - Vacant
45 - Vacant

No. 3 confirmed for Adams and no. 4 confirmed for Grundy via photo in The Age article.

3+4 = 7 = Harry Cunningham to win the Norm Smith?

Many other Clubs have released their numbers for 2024. No surprise we haven’t. I would have been shocked if we were on the front foot and ahead of the other Clubs.

I know this a relatively minor issue but for me it is symptomatic of a Club that habitually leaves things late or to chance.

Successful organisations aim to excel in all their functions.

Holy crap! They gave #12 to Sheldrick. Absolutely ******* love that!

Brodie returns to his #4 from the Pies. Taylor next to his mate. Makes good sense. Are they going to be best mates at each other's weddings? They both refer to fiancees in their vids.

Kirk gets his dad's number - I love that too.

Will Green bides his time at #45. Will he keep it a la Mumford, or move up in the years to come?

They left #23 empty which I don't mind but nor do I think it was necessary.
