I'm all in favour of honouring Goodesy but in practice I don't think it will work.

Hopefully we will have an indigenous player in the future with multiple Brownlows, Norm Smiths, and Premierships who will elevate his own number x up there with 14 and 37.
The player might want to keep his own number for that reason, or any other. Even if he is given a choice he will be under (real or imagined) pressure to take 37 otherwise he will be seen as snubbing Goodesy, or as having a big head etc.

Then we will have a situation where all good to great indigenous players are in effect required to play in no.37, whereas all non-indigenous players get the choice of any other number.

Seven new players. Wonder if they might leave Kennedy's 12 unused for a year or two?

Francis might have 10 again like at the Bombers. Been at least one existing player "upgrade" their number the last few seasons I think?

Give Konstanty number 10 so he sits next to Papley in the locker-room.
 
#12 is also next to Papley. Francis might not want #10 anyway - might want a fresh start.

I reckon HHK, or possibly McAndrew, are about the only players I can see trading up a number.

Nice one! So they have already allocated numbers. Given there are a lot of lower numbers available, I wonder if the likes or HHK, McAndrew, Rankin, or even Paddy have taken the chance to move up. I can't see Fox, Melican or Lloyd changing numbers - but stranger things have happened.

Will guess they leave Joey's 12 vacant for at least one more season and Buddy's 23 for at least a couple of seasons too. Similar to what they did with Goodesy's 37.
 
Assuming we land Adams and Grundy, and draft Cleary:

3 - Adams
4 - Grundy (his number at the Pies).
12 - Hamling
17 - Jordon
23 - Vacant
31 - Cleary

With the other numbers to be taken by other draftees.

Another option is we give 23 to Grundy. He's got the experience to take it on without it being too big a deal, and then in a few years when he's retired he can pass it on to someone else without it being "Buddy's number".

Leaving 23 “vacant” would feel all wrong to me.

Buddy - great player, but not in need of any more accolades.
