I'm inclined to agree.. Various commentators seem to cream their pants whenever he walks onto the field, and he's been considered The Next Big Thing (tm) since god knows when, but the fact is, he just can't cut it next to some of the other guys coming through.
He would have to have been close to worst on ground vs Pakistan- batted like a dog, and topped it off with slack, wasteful bowling.

I went and had a look at him in action last night. His bowling was abysmal - he was being picked off like a novice. He doesn't appear to have any confidence.

The best performed, IMO, were Hauritz and Noffke with the ball, and Campbell with the bat. Noffke would be just what the World Cup squad wants - he bowls a good tight line and length, and is difficult to score off. Bracken wasn't up to much.

The selection of Symonds on his current form is, frankly, baffling.

I'm a fan of Symonds, but I have to admit his form in the Australia A v Sri Lanka game last night was alarming. Even his fielding didn't seem up to it's usual high standard.
On his current form he'd have to regard himself as very fortunate indeed.

Symonds isnt up to this level.Blewett and Hogg were my prefered options.Blewetts a better bowler and far better batsman and would have been handy as back up opener for the green tops in SA where Gilchrist may struggle.Hogg is a better bowler and a more reliable batsman who can play the one day game at both paces.

Must of taken Symonds as the 12th man, as his fielding is the only thing going for him at the moment as his batting & bowling is atrocious. However, Blewett himself is a pretty useful fielder, but the bonus is the guy can actually bat & bowl too (& is in form).

One has to wonder about Trevor Hohns performance atm. He seems to be getting a bit to old to be a selector and his form of late has been bad to say the least.

Trevor Hohns to be dropped asap!

hear hear, and AB... too much qld influence ;)

I'd have to agree with everything that has been said.

When he is 'on' he can field very well and take the odd wicket although that seems to be rare at the moment. I reckon he can't quite find his feet and at this stage, never will! I beleive he has changed his bowling style/type yet that has not helped as at this stage.

Picking an all-rounder because there is suuposedly a need for one.

But if he makes 15 runs and goes for 6 runs an over almost all the time, wouldn't it be better to pick a specialist batsman or bowler?

Besides, it's still getting overlooked that Gilchrist is an all-rounder (and Lehmann's averaging a wicket per match of late), so there is theoretically room for one more specialist player, as the need dictates.

drink?

I can't help but feel as if he's been picked as a professional 12th man. He can come on and scorch in the field, and not be required to embarass himself demonstrating any of the other skills of cricket.

Just reading an article about Andrew Symonds on www.news.com.au.

And read this quote.. "Acting on a recommendation from Ponting, the selectors gave Symonds the last place in the 15-man squad ahead of Blewett and Harvey. "

Thanks Ponting!

This was a mistake. And I suspect Ponting recommended him in part because of their personal friendship ..... not because of form.

The position of Symonds occupies in the squad is that of the second all rounder.

I think from the previous posts its agreed by most this was always going to be out of Harvey, Blewett or Symonds.

Much as I regard Harvs (as a Victorian) his form at international level with the bat has been poor and inferior to Symonds. Blewett had emerged as something of a smokey. His bolwing at ODI level is pretty much untested.

Symonds is an undoubted and freakish talent but terribly inconsistent.

It was a real toss up - but as others have pointed out Symonds is a bonus purely as a professional twelfth man.

And that I suspect was the reason for his selection.

Professional 12th man eh? Take Bevan off the field, and put Symonds on while bowling. ..
Not a bad idea :D

I've been thinking the same thing...

Are we witnessing the rebirth of Rodger Harper?!?!

Andrew Symonds annoys the crap out of me. Why do we persist with him? He is about as useful as Ian Harvey is with the bat, what is that clowns highest score in ODI's?

That stumping the other night. One word Andy - Fundamentals.

Although hugely impressed with the form of both BA Williams and NW Bracken, either of these two would have been a handy addition to the world cup XV considering the current penchant for our bowlers to get injured (i.e Dizzy, McGrath, Bichel & Warnie)
