Pick 30: Melbourne – Fraser Rosman
  • #30 Melbourne - Fraser Rosman (194cm, 84kg from Vic Metro)

Last pick for Melbourne already, so I'm going for potential. And again, I'm looking at adding more speed.

Like a lot of the Victorians, who knows what would have happened in 2020 for Rosman. He could have pushed into the first round mix, or maybe he would have gone undrafted. Who knows really. But whenever I've seen him, he's looked promising - from U16s a couple of years ago to some impressive stuff in practice matches for Sandringham at the start of the year. I always like it when players back themselves in, and Rosman is someone who looks to use his run to beat his opponents - a bit like Sam Frost in that regard. And he just has that bit of x factor about him up forward.

While there are lots of unknowns, what we do know is that he's a super athlete with elite endurance and speed. Now he just needs to continue to add some weight and get stronger through the body. Despite his height though, he is best suited to playing as a third tall forward - or even off a wing. He's gotten comparisons to players like Isaac Smith and Jaidyn Stephenson. So that lack of strength isn't a deal breaker by any means.

Drafting a tall is always risky, drafting a Victorian tall this year is even riskier. But Rosman has enough versatility and athleticism to find a role somewhere.

Pick 31: Fremantle – Brandon Walker (bid matched)
  • Sorry all PMBangers on holiday and forgot my charger for the laptop - yes will definitely match on B. Walker.

    Pick 31 - Brandon Walker
    East Fremantle
    Defender / Utility

    Pros:

    • Very athletic, good speed (and uses that to break lines), agility and leap reasonable size (183-186cm);
    • Good reader of the play and intercept mark; and
    • Does the 1% and is effective as a defender; can arguably match up on smalls or mediums.

    Queries:
    • Has played wing a little but looks most suited to the backline
    • Arguably playing a position that the team drafting for already has a lot of

Very happy to pick him up with only pick 31.

Pick 32: GWS GIANTS – Tom Highmore
  • Pick 32 - GWS GIANTS

    Tom Highmore
    South Adelaide
    Tall Defender
    192 cm 89 kg

    Tom-Highmore-head-shot.png
The upper end of his range, but to round out the National Draft selections of GWS I've gone with mature ager and former Academy Member Tom Highmore, one of the best Mature Age prospects for this years draft, Tom made the move to the SANFL from the NEAFL and improved on his form in a much stronger league, showing that despite being quite developed already there's room for improvement, and I think in an AFL system with stronger players around him, that's bound to happen. When you're looking at the strengths of Highmore there's a lot there to like, his marking, read of the play and disposal skills are highlights for a taller player.

Doesn't have many weaknesses, he's a little underwhelming speed wise but makes up for it with positioning and how proactive he is, truly a Round 1 ready player, and one I'd say can come in replace Aidan Corr really well.

As I've said it's the upper end of his range, some might say too early but I don't think anything else around here in terms of KPDs excites me a whole heap, and he's certainly not lasting until the rookie draft if we do one, and the other couple of players I was considering likely will be

Pick 33: North Melbourne – Joel Western (bid not matched)
  • Pick 33 - North Melbourne - Joel Western

    Joel Western
    Claremont/Fremantle Academy
    172 cm/ 67kg
    Midfielder/Small Forward

A creative speed machine, Joel Western is the perfect addition to North’s midfield and forward mix. Averaging 22.6 disposals, 4.3 Inside-50s, 4.3 clearances, 5 score involvements and 2.9 tackles a game in the WAFL Colts, Western can play on the inside and outside and will bring welcome speed, agility, endurance and aggression to the midfield of Ben Cunnington, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Jy Simpkin. He has also shown that he can be an effective forward, providing spark, creativity and providing plenty of scoreboard pressure.

    Testing Data

    Standing Vertical Jump: 80cm
    Running Vertical Jump (R/L): 88cm/91cm
    Speed (20m): 2.88 seconds
    Agility: 8.47 seconds
    Endurance (Yo-yo): 21.5

Pick 34: Carlton – Bailey Laurie
  • Pick 34 - Carlton

    Bailey Laurie
    Oakleigh Chargers
    Midfielder/Forward

I really like Laurie’s game and project it to translate somewhere between Jack Higgins and Jade Gresham. He’s not big and not super fast but he’s a really good footballer. He’s safe by hand and foot with his delivery inside forward 50 something I value highly. He has forward craft and has shown enough to suggest there is midfield scope down the track. He will start his career as a half forward and I expect him to put immediate pressure on the likes of Fisher, Gibbons and Newnes etc.

    Smythe you're up!

Pick 35: Richmond - Jack Ginnivan
  • Ok in this position there was a consideration to bid for Connor Donnie, picking Isiah Winder, however we will match any bid on Rioli jnr from here on out. Liam Kolar was also a consideration but I rate him more as a rookie although his upside could be huge. In this instance there was a player I could not leave on the board, who I see as having a high ceiling and can be taught multiple roles and also plays the Richmond style.
    PICK 35 - Richmond - Jack Ginnivan - Bendigo Pioneers - 184cm -77kg
    STRENGTHS:

    • Goal sense
    • Footy IQ
    • Metres gained
    • Evasion
    • Scoreboard impact
    • Disposal
    IMPROVEMENTS:

    • Midfield development
    • Defensive pressure
Jack played 12 games last year averaging 16 disp, 3.5 m, 2 tackles and 1.6 goals per game.
Has huge potential and huge upside with his game play and football knowledge. His high footy iq shines throughout his play, with his ability to stay in the contest and link in the chains of play.
He has an evasive side step and seems to have/create his own time in the contest to be able to burst away and deliver the ball efficiently or handball it out to a team mate. His play is creative and team oriented.
his forward half play is already very good and he was destined to play more midfield and across the backline this year to improve those areas.
Jack is someone I see flourishing in a full time professional environment.
He has all the tools there to make it at the next level and I see him as someone who could learn a midfield role similar to what Richmond are doing with Thompson Dow (a creative burst from stoppages player who can win their own ball) but I think he will most likely find himself learning a defensive role first and learning to play across the back flank using his agility, speed, creativeness and effective ball use in gaining meters for his team and delivering the ball to the forward line.
Who better to help him learn the craft than Bachar Houli.

Pick 36: Carlton – Brodie Lake
  • Pick 36 - Carlton

    Brodie Lake
    Northern Territory/Central District
    Midfielder/Forward

I really like Lake's forward craft as a strong medium type who is capable in the air, strong in the contest and skilled enough to be a threat from anywhere inside 50. This gives him a chance to play some footy early as he builds his tank and midfield craft. As a midfielder his speed and athleticism allows him to win and accumulate on the outside while his physicality and strength allows him to win his share of the contested footy. I think he has the scope to be a handy third or fourth string midfielder who can spend considerable time in the forward half as a dangerous marking, goal kicking forward.

Pick 37: North Melbourne - Oliver Davis
  • Pick 37 - North Melbourne - Oliver Davis

    Tasmania Devils/ Clarence
    Height:
    182cm
    Weight: 75kg
    Position: Inside midfielder
    Champion data comparison: Caleb Serong

A midfield bull, Oliver Davis is a clearance and tackling machine. Strong and agile in the contest, he has clean hands and goes into every contest putting his body on the line.

    2019 NAB League (13 games)
    22 disposals, 5.1 inside-50s, 2.4 marks, 5.5 clearances, 1.2 score assists, 4.7 score involvements, 7.8 tackles, 130 ranking points

    Highlights:

    Thunderstruck

Pick 38: Adelaide – Kaine Baldwin
  • Pick #38 Adelaide - Kaine Baldwin 193cm 90kg Glenelg

Had to take Kaine here, have gone with 4 mids, now for a GUN key forward despite 2 ACL's this kid is a dead set gun in the making if he can keep his body right from here on in.

Dominated Under 16 level where he essentially had no peer as a key forward. Without his knees he'd be talked along with the likes of Thilthorpe and McDonald as the best forwards in the draft. Strong hands, powerful vice like one grab marking and a rare talent to judge the flight of the footy and use the body. Run and jumpone grab contested marking, pack crashing strong type of forward. Perhaps wouldn't be able to do that as well against far bigger men at AFL level but still would make a fine forward, he's as natural as you get down there. In short, too good to pass at 38 almost a free swing, I really hope for footballs sake he can have a good AFL career!!

Pick 39: Essendon – Liam McMahon
  • Essendon Pick 39
    Liam McMahon
    196cm 84kg
    Northern Knights/KM
    Key Forward

Essendon still need some more key forwards coming through and although Nik Cox can play forward I’ll be developing him to play down back, McMahon on the other hand is a pure key forward with a great leap and posses one fo the cleanest marks overhead in this years crop.

McMahon had a good year compared to his Victorian peers as a bottom ager out performing the likes of Eyre, Allison, Lord and Kolar just to name a few. With a few strong performances hitting the scoreboard he was due to take it up another notch this year. Growing from 193cm to a now genuine key position prospect at 196cm he really should have pushed his case to be a genuine top 25 prospect this year if Covid hadn’t ruined that.

McMahon has battled consistency issues which are common in young developing talls in their bottom age year and it’s yet to be determined whether he would have addressed those issues this year, McMahon is a great athlete testing well in all areas at the combine and with his athleticism also goes with some nice forward craft and great hands and movement at ground level which comes from his past as a tall midfielder.

McMahon is my potential surprise packet from this draft, not expected to be taken high if at all this year but he is one I think will really prove his worth in the coming years. Good mates with Essendon NGA prospect Josh Eyre he should form a great tandem with him over the coming years and a great young bloke to match.

I was confident that Thunderstruck would take Baldwin but he would have been my pick, Liam Kolar and Matt Allison both very close aswell.

    Picks 40 & 41: Hawthorn – Luke Edwards & Zane Trew
  • Pick 40 - Luke Edwards - Glenlg - 188cm 83kg

a player who impressed me in the 2019 champs as a tall hbf with run and good skills, i really liked his inside clearance game in the SA All Stars game in 2020 as well, seems to be very versatile, mostly has played hbf, but can play some wing and i liked his inside attacking midfield form, his height and versatility make him a good prospect, good skills and smarts.

    Pick 41 - Zane Trew - Swan Dist - 185cm 80kg

solid midfielder, i was stuck between Dumesny and Trew as 2 solid mids without setting the world on fire, averages good numbers in the WAFL Colts, averages good tackle numbers so can add a defensive side to a midfield group, with Davis and Berry already taken he is a good midfield option here after we've taken 2 KPP's and a utility in Edwards, so a pure midfielder is a decent pick up at this stage.

Pick 42: Sydney Swans – Shannon Neale
  • Pick #42 Shannon Neale - South Fremantle
    Ruckman
    202cm / 91kg

Sydney get their future no1 ruckman. Sinclair is a competitor but hardly a dominant ruckman of the competition and there are question marks over Naismiths body. The swans desperately need someone who can give them control in the centre and around stoppages. Neale is that guy, while being an incredibly raw prospect he is extremely gifted athletically and has great upside. Neale has an excellent vertical leap off both feet (91cm/86cm), while also possessing good speed for someone at his height (3.03s 20m sprint) and solid endurance (6:35 2km) which he showed off at the WA combine, so he is quite an athlete. He is also not just pigeon holed to being a ruckman, as he has shown he can go forward and take strong contested marks and make an impact on the scoreboard (which coaches love from a ruckman), while also being a presence around the ground. A few years in the gym is needed to build is strength, but there is no need to rush him to play straight away and they can let him develop his body and also improve on his consistency game to game. The swans may even start his career as a forward as he learns how to play ruck at the level (it also helps having one of the best to ever to do on the swans coaching panel). His future is bright and he has the potential to become a dominant ruckman in the competition.

Pick 43: Hawthorn – Connor Downie
  • Pick 43 - Hawthorn - Connor Downie - Eastern Ranges - 185cm 82kg

with our last pick we will have to take Downie without a bid, one of the best wingers in the draft pool, long range goal kicker, runs good lines, strong bodied for a wing, but adding to his contested side would be a benefit, was a key part of the top of the table Eastern Ranges in 2019, was ok in his Vic Metro outing for the short time he had on the field, was solid playing for the AFL Academy as well, was meant to move into the midfield in 2020 to improve his contested side of his game before the season got cancelled.

Pick 45: Geelong – Kalin Lane
  • Pick 45: Kalin Lane (Ruckman/Western Australia) (Height: 204cm, Weight: 96kg)

When I was tasked with picking for Geelong I did a runthrough of what their list needs and where they would want to be at 5+ years from now. Geelongs Ruck stocks are aging and could do with some developmental players, and they've already got one in basketball player Paul Tsapatolis, but like most Cat-B sports converts, he's a speculative pick. I decided with Geelong's first pick I'd go with Kalin Lane, who fits the mould of a developing ruckman while already having some of the tools necessary at AFL Level. The stand out part of Lane's game is his ruck craft, which has had him winning most of the ruck battles he's been in at WAFL level this year, averaging 24.9 hitouts for the year. His follow up work is what makes him such an exciting pick, he's competitive so he backs himself in to compete at ground level and win a clearance, which is something clubs are hopeful modern-day ruckmen can do. Lane will need to build some consistency at VFL level, but he's lucky in the fact that for 2-3 years Stanley and Fort can carry the load for Geelong while he builds.

Pick 51: Port Adelaide – Zac Dumesny
  • Port select Zac Dumesny

    187 / 80 / South Adelaide

Zac is a no frills utility capable of playing all over the park. This is a steal for me as i've got him 20th on my ratings list. Strong and well built already and with senior experience, he is capable of slotting into the team in year 1 if needed. What I like about him is the fact that he can be deployed all over the place and can be expected to do a good job. Whether thats coming off a back flank, playing as a lead up forward or on a wing, he's played good footy in each.

I like him most on a wing, pushing into the midfield in the future. He's shown he can be a high disposal winning player at different levels. He's skills are good and he has the ability to run all day.

Very happy I got this pick.

Pick 52: Richmond – Josh Treacy
  • write up tomorrow
Richmond - Josh Treacy - Bendigo
    194cms 94 kg
other considerations but not the right picks for us as we need a developing agile fwd were,
Luke Pedlar, Patrick Walker, Sam Collins, Fraser Elliot. I was hoping for Liam Kolar
and also considered a Josh Eyre bid.

Pick 53: West Coast – Luke Pedlar
  • West Coast: Pick # 125795254444 ( well feels like it anyway )

Luke Pedlar. Midfielder / Forward. 183 cm 80 kg. Glenelg.

Help for a midfield thats short on depth, in a team that doesn't win enough contested possession.

Been described as an Inside Bull, with a playing style in the Joel Selwood Ollie Wines style, a player who unflinchingly puts his head over the ball at all times.

Sounds almost to good to be true, so why has he lasted so late in the draft.

Simple answer is that all players selected at this point have question marks over them. They may have a deficiency or a some other question mark. Pedlar is no exception and his question mark is injuries. That have firstly prevented him from being on the Park is a season that has been simultaneously compromised by no Championships.

Like all of his cohort Pedlar has been restricted from showing his craft due to Covid and the fact that he also had an injury to his shoulder early in the season and then a minor knee injury late in the season which kept him out of the School Grand Final.

Pedlar has some positional flexibility to his skill set as whilst he is a very good inside mid he also can play as a small forward that hits the scoreboard, plus his pressure in either position is elite. He may well start his career at AFL as a small forward and then work his way into the midfield rotations.

Pedlar also has leadership qualities as he was School Captain of Prince Alfred College.

Being from Hastings a couple of hours South Of Adelaide he has already lived away from home, so an inter state move should not be a big obstacle.

It’s no secret that after the starting midfield, West Coast run very thin on any sort of quality depth to its midfield.
So the addition of a contested beast to add to the midfield rotations makes a lot of sense and the fact that Pedlar has positional versatility is a bonus.

Pretty happy to have been able to pick up a genuine midfielder so late in the draft.

    Knightmare Saints are up.

Pick 54: Richmond – Maurice Rioli Jr (bid matched)
  • Straight match
    Richmond - Maurice Rioli Jnr
    173cms 73 kgs
    NT - Oakleigh Chargers
    STRENGTHS:

    • Speed
    • Agility
    • Tackling
    • Defensive pressure
    • Goal sense
    IMPROVEMENTS:

    • Sustained impact/consistency
    PRESEASON TESTING HIGHLIGHTS:

    Speed (20m)
    – 2.98 seconds
    Agility – 8.11 seconds
    Endurance (Yo-yo) – 20.5

Excited to bring this young guy in as a Richmond Father-Son selection.
Rioli is the hungriest tackler with intent in the entire draft. He will hunt them down and ferociously tackle to hurt anywhere on the ground but mainly inside 50 which gives any team he is in great opportunities to lock the ball deep inside 50 and/or have shots on goal.
He is a pressure style player and loves a goal. As it says above he does lack 4 quarter consistency but a very high ceiling given his traits and abilities that have been on display in limited exposure.
He has extraordinary skills and in game pace to burn. Still has a lot to learn and is a very raw talent, and it may take a preseason or 2 to harden him up and teach him a team style game he needs to play but is one that will flourish in an elite full time professional environment.
    Welcome to Richmond young man.

Pick 55: St Kilda – Jackson Cardillo
  • #55 St Kilda - Jackson Cardillo
    Best position: Inside midfield
    Height, weight: 185cm, 77kg
    Recruited from: Calder Cannons
    Projected draft range: late-undrafted
    December ranking: 31
Rationale: With his mix of points of difference with his acceleration 2.88 20m clocked during the preseason and winning more than 50% of his ball in contested situations, Cardillo is a high probability of success prospect.
    Strengths:
    First possession winner at stoppages
    Contested ball winning
    Ground ball winning
    Aggressive attack on the ball
    Distribution by hand
    Acceleration
Takes on the game with his speed
    Power to break tackles
Wins a high percentage of the ball contested
    Aerial marking
    Marks at the highest point
Reading of the ball in flight
    Penetrating kick
    Vision
    Forward pressure
    Tackling
Possesses versatility to play not only as a ball winning midfielder but also can rest as a forward or play in defence
    Weaknesses:
    Endurance
    Production
    Finishing in front of goal
    Kicking consistency

    --
Doesn't seem to be attracting the AFL interest I'd expect but like his game needless to say. Another case of adding to St Kilda's midfield. Probably starts his career forward then transitions into more of a midfielder as his endurance builds. Brings much needed ball winning and power inside.
