So what's the thought that TV deals aside, it's possible a fairer comp now with teams having extended runs at home (other than the ususal suspects at the G), makes you realize how lopsided it is.
17 rounds is fairer. Alternate whose home and whose away each year. Similarly whether getting 8 or 9 home games.
So one year 9 homes against 9 sides and eight away games against the other 8. Next year 9 away games against the sides you played at home the previous year and 8 home games against the sides you played away the year before.

Of course it's not perfect as you may end up playing a bunch of good sides away and poor sides at home or vice versa, but it's fairer then the current system. Unless it drops to 16 teams and 30 rounds it's as fair as it'd get. TV rights precludes it, outside of that it'd also help with a later start to the season (so AFLW doesn't run into it), being able to program multiple byes (say after rounds 5, 9, 13 and 17) and still have September finals.

Given all the problems with the existing draw, including the continual s**t games against low drawing sides every year at AO, I'd jump at a 17 round season structured like this. So what at only one Showdown a year and only every second ours? Not getting GWS, Freo, Melbourne, Saints on a Sunday afternoon most years would more than compensate for it.

So after 7 Round in we have played 1 at home. So if all the Vic teams are back in Victoria after round 9, I'm trying to work out who do we play in an extended run at Adelaide oval - or do we just keep playing interstate?
The ‘Port are pretenders’ thing is also bollox atm!
We’ve been the most successful hub team by far and lost to a non hub team
On their home ground after weeks away.

Just heard Mark Naley died. Sad news, he was a brilliant player, part of the class of stars of SA footy in the early to mid 1980s.

Can still remember the big parts he played in victories against Victoria in the 1980s. Kicked 4 goals in one game. Great games that left a lasting impression on me.

Very sad news, easily the best South player I've ever seen and a great State representative. Rest easy.

Obit on the Carlton site is fascinating. Explains the blistering speed.

"SOUTH Australia’s workplace health and safety regulator, SafeWork SA could be called in to investigate the Adelaide Football Club’s infamous 2018 pre-season training camp, after premier Steven Marshall said he was disturbed by reports that players were put through traumatic activities in an attempt to build their resilience. "A SafeWork SA spokesperson confirmed that the regulatory body had not received any notifications or complaints against the Adelaide Football Club in relation to the camp."

This comment will give Auld Travis a coronary:

"McGowan added that any Victorian teams who have quarantined in Queensland would have to repeat the process when they get to WA"

Will Snelling instead of Rockliff. Never thought Kern gave Snelling a chance.

******* hell. The Rockliff hate on this board is getting out of hand. There are issues with team balance when we play him and Wines together and that is a legitimate cause for concern, but Will Snelling isn't fit to lace his boots.

So how does that work the camp occurred in Queensland and does not come under the jurisdiction of South Australia's Occupational Health Safety & Welfare Act 1986. I guess the Adelaide Football Club as the employer is held responsible for ensuring the safety of employees under section 19 but surely this does not apply if they go interstate? Then again Steven Marshall is a lawyer so he would know.

Update on Thursday's post. they were instructed to change interpretations, and they did it.

Except they paid the wrong ones. Still making basic errors.

if we’re doing this 18 rounds. Double up the derbies. It makes so much sense I don’t know why people keep forgetting about it. An extra game, an extra big ticket game for clubs, another home game for all clubs.

Wasn’t that the first big home crowd of the year?

Can’t wait to see how this somehow ends up biting Port in some roundabout way like we have to pay for a safe work Sa levy for some bloke to sign us off or we get fined for non-regulation door sizes while brave crows have to fight through this injustice.

Nah. That’s a step towards unbalanced again. Plus whose the big game for the smaller Vic sides? No point making it fairer then immediately start stepping that back.

Imagine how big the Home Showdown would be with only one every second year? It’d be packed to the rafters.

it’s already hard to get showdown tickets. If port home showdowns are every second year lots of fans will miss out. Not just to season ticket holders either, corporate will eat those suckers up.

the Vic clubs play their Vic club rivals. We listen to the media tell us all the time about how storied these supposed rivalries are.

If that ends up being the case the afl will just play out of hubs in nsw qld and darwin and the wa sides will have to play out of hubs all year

From the article
SafeWork SA spokesperson - “SafeWork SA does not have jurisdiction over Queensland businesses, however, where South Australian businesses operate interstate, we may have jurisdiction over activities relating to safe systems of work,” she said.

Well that won't happen. WCE is close to the biggest bully club of the league: almost always get what they want because, wow, would we hear the moaning if they didn't.

That is extremely sad news, champion player and later commentator on the ABC.
Blistering pace, highly skilled would walk in to any VFL team in the eighties.
