Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Bombers

Bit of an over reaction here surely? We're top 4, winning games while blooding young players. Shuey and Yeo both on track for finals.

Midfield wasn't great tonight but Kelly/Sheed/Redden isn't a bad starting group in the middle. I mean they've all stepped up before.
On top of that. He was probably likely to miss next game regardless of if he came back on and if we’re serious we shouldn’t need him against North. The Saints game is where we’ll probably feel it the most but I’m backing someone else to step up.

I’d be throwing O’Neill straight in the middle and bringing Cameron in up front. Ainsworth isn’t the answer imo. Although it would be interesting to see what he did with a full game in the guts.

Thought we looked better last week in a loss.

But having said that, liked the way we played tonight though in terms of controlling the game with the chip kick, smart to conserve the energy given we've played 3 games in 9 days.
It's quite evident that the team is coasting as much as they can this season in order to stay fit (shuey incident aside).

The ability to win a game off a 5-10min burst and then just park the bus for the remainder of the game is a good sign IMO.

This season is a war of attrition, the best team probably won't win it, it'll be the team with the most fit players in October.
Hopefully we can keep our players on the park.

Shuey shouldn’t have been on the ground even if he was fully fit. It was so late in the game it was get your best players off time, not risk your best players time. Amateur hour.

Lucky win really. That crappy concede ground defensive kicking around in back half and not even try to score (and eventually turn it over) simply won’t work against good teams. They’ll just goal each time. Tigers and Cats would eat us for breakfast. Essendon are luckily just a basket case (who still could have easily won if we weren’t so accurate).

Take the win and move on but geez.

XAV really clean and composed again, knows how to create space and generally makes the right decision when in traffic. Already looks like a 50 game player. With shuey out with a “Fyfe niggle” XAV will get some more touches.

Williams look like a real find also, can take a grab and knows when to take the tackle on.

They played a huge game against the reigning premiers 5 days ago, the midfield and ruck got a hammering.
They scrounged out a win anyway possible tonight = 4 points! (that's what it's all about)
They just have to bludgeon wins out of the next 2 games. Ugly, dirty, whatever it takes.
Good players coming back each week now.
Jetts was blowing out the rust, but keep him there, he'll ping a couple.
Each game makes the newbies more tuned.
Move on to the next one.

+We won the game without really getting out of 3rd gear . Once we got that lead we just did enough to win whilst conserving our energy .

+Only 27 tackles means we are hopefully bruise free .

+Natanui only played about 45mins . Dark Sharks Would have loved his workout

+Boys will be happy with a 6 day break

+ contested marks !

- contested marks covered our midfield getting rolled convincingly

- Kelly's worst game for the club

- shuey going back on when the game was done .

- jettas kicking radar is way off

- hutch is way off the pace

+ Ryan was great. Having him leading out of the goal square offers us another dimension.
+ Redden was good in his return.
+ Hurn's best game all year.
+ Darling strong up forward.
+ Jetta couldn't finish his chances but he got to the right spots. Offered us creativity we've been missing on the HFF since we lost Rioli.
+ Ah Chee had limited output but I was impressed with his defensive efforts and attack on the ball.
+ O'Neill did some nice things. Doesn't look out of place at all.

- Sheed was terrible. Fumbles, missed kicks and the usual weak tackling efforts.
- Midfield outclassed by one of the weaker contested outfits in the league.
- Hutchings still a total liability with the ball.
- Foot off the pedal crap to finish the first half and start the second. Noticeable drop in pressure resulting in four unanswered goals. Still too much ebb and flow to our game.

A bit to digest from that performance.

Really excited with the signs O'Neil and Williams are showing. I think they are going to make the grade for sure.

Sheed and Kelly really quiet. Hopefully by design but they will have to step up against the Bullies.

The mids, as a collective, have been barely going for the last few games. We are getting by on the quality of our backs and forwards and Nic. Again, difficult to know if that is coaching to preserve us through this condensed fixture or a loss of form.

It really feels like we are on a knife edge balancing this unique seasons demands. Hopefully we don't slip as our margin for error is zero unless another contender stumbles.

The biggest concern is this midfield, most of our losses are us getting absolutely smashed in contested ball.

Yeo is just a massive loss for the contested ball work. Only really Redden helps out there. Kelly, Sheed and Shuey are most the second touch or loose ball types.

With cuts to spending hitting hard, can the first heads on the chopping block be whoever it was that let Shuey back on?

Absolutely ridiculous decision.
I’m in disbelief they let him back on... what the actual *kkk. That type of blunder from a professional team? He wasn’t even making that much if a difference, to warrant him being a desperate return. Ffs.

Positives +

+ Duggan is becoming extremely good across half-back
+ Ryan filling the JK void. Give him a solid season down the track and I could see Ryan pushing for a Coleman.
+ XOV early. Faded late but looks clean and composed. Solid unit too.
+ Hurn still of value to the side and hopefully has enough to go around again next year.
+ Backline in general. Keeps us in games atm. Give Shep AA already.
+ Rotham continues. Dude has just slotted into the system and is playing good football.
+ Darling. Fights, competes and halves contests all day even against 2-3 opponents.
+ Gaff. 100% time on ground. Never stops running and is always there to either fill a gap or provide an option. Gun.
+ Williams and Cole goals.
+ Bring on down the Anus next round.
+ Despite the margin and the bombers getting that run off halfback, they never really looked like winning. Our ability to control a game is pretty wild.

Negatives -

- Whole midfield unit and even Nic Nat looked down today. Teams are starting to position defensively against us at the centre bounce and have success. Lots of holding that goes unpunished against us atm too. I'm thinking our struggles in the forward line are a symptom of our midfield. If we get centre dominance and supply the forward lines sings.
- Add even 1% of moisture to a ground and we struggle with clean disposal and connection. We are that Rolls-Royce you don't take out if its a bit wet on a Sunday.
- Hutch. His tagging job on Saad was non-existent. Saad was often mopping up ground balls with zero pressure on him and always on the rebound.
- Tim Kelly. TBH he has kinda been disappointing this year. People talk about new systems and new teammates but he slotted in pretty nicely a Geelong from WAFL. I only say this because when he is good its really good.
- It's hard to be too critical. The bombers are not a bad team and have some weapons. Heppell and Hurley back in spelt danger for us but we got the win. We played a cobbled-together team, stopped running midway through the 3rd, and our backline saved the day. But if we want to make the GF we defs need to lift another gear.
- Bring on down the Anus next round.
- Our backline is our greatest strength atm but it is almost guaranteed every week an opposition small will kick a bag on us.

Still feel like we are one of the most exciting teams to watch. Always feel like something is going to happen and when we click its electric. Always going to lean towards backing the team in and enjoying the ride.

Seri
Combined 150 champion data points between Sheed, Hutchings, Jetta and Ah Chee. Our senior depth isn’t holding us in good stead at the moment

Hope O’Neill holds his spot though he’s not always involved enough
Seriously... who give s s**t about the Champion Data algorithm... does it factor in the first game back after an extended time out of the seniors?

Got over the line and had to tough it out. I don't think we took the peddle of but were challenged hard. Shuey played on as we had to hold the win.
While the mids were beaten and the forwards mostly not there I didnt think we were going to lose it. Ryan and JD were great and the bg guys all took telling late marks.

Negatives:
Taking the foot off the gas, we are doing it far too regularly (in games that are still a contest)
Leaving some possible % on the table
Midfield down, they looked tired - but Essendon were coming off the same short break

Positives:
We rob Peter to pay Paul with Ryan at full forward. Excellent goal kicker (and gives us a plan b in finals) but takes away a crumber and pressure forward. To win without a lot of that pressure (and Cripps out too) is great.

XON is very good at being a 1 touch player. Made 1 major error, but got involved in a couple of chains where his clean pickups dictated that we won the contest. Hopefully when we get mids back he stays in as a forward.

I thought Jetta was a positive. Hasn't played forward in 8 years, Hasn't played AFL in 10 weeks and got involved. Most execution was average or poor, but he made the right choices. Clean up the execution (not normally an issue for him) and he could be a real weapon forward.

Banking 4 points is the biggest +. Top 4 very much in our hands, and top 2 is a live possibility. Now to recover for the dogs and hopefully bank 4 more points.
