The Melbourne Perspective:
I cannot remember the last time when we went into a game as favourites. It must have been back in late 2006. Since then, well, it has all been a handful of dust. Even so, as badly as we have been travelling, there has always been the circus down at Punt Road . . . . . .
We have some Richmond supporters in the wider family. Yes, they too bear testimony to the maxim: at the heart of every Richmond supporter there lies a streak of self-loathing, that is why they turn on each other at the slightest of provocations – but even they, dejected and disappointed, no longer unsheath their claws when the conversation turns to stuff ups of the yellow and black variety.
Being objective as I possibly can be, we have at least ten promising youngest on our list that any other club would seriously look at. Richmond, on the other hand, has Grrrrr Dustin, Deledio (maybe) Cotchin and . . . and . . . and . . hey, how old is that Jordy McMuffin again? Be it intentional or otherwise, we have stocked up on talent just prior to the onset of GC17, whereas Wallace failed to prune the list in the nick of time – vanity of vanities, all is vanity, especially if a sunlamp is involved. If I was a Richmond supporter, I would find it hard to list anything that I could look forward to, other than the Pura Cup.
What am I expecting on Sunday? Well, there won’t be an abundance of silky skills on display. There ain’t going to be a rush down to an Australian Football Video on Monday morning to snap up copies of this match. Hopefully the wind will be less of a factor. With a bit of confidence in the tank, I want to see our boys to execute the finer points of Dean Bailey’s mystical, if not mythical game plan. Grimes and the boys down back will shine. The Russian will put more distance between his current standing and the old moniker of Donuts. And above all, I want to see the die-hard Richmond supporters at the game to turn on each other, one last time, when Tambling reminds them of the wider failure, whose name is Legion. Dees by 30 points.
