I'm all for dropping VB this week. His performance last night was very poor. No argument there. Dmack, not so much - he was OK last night.

As a general philosophy, I don't see the point in dropping a player who is performing reasonably well unless the player replacing him is an upgrade. In 2015 the players waiting on the sidelines were CEY, Grigg and Lyons - none of whom represent an upgrade. This year we have more options, many of whom could be considered to be an upgrade. Missing from this week were Knight, Cameron and Menzel, all of whom I would consider to be upgrades (though Menzel is not currently fit enough).

Replace Mackay with CEY or Lyons, and I will be disappointed. Replace him with Knight or Cameron, and you won't hear a peep from me.

If we assume that Knight and Cameron are ready for AFL selection this week, then 2 players have to drop out. One of them should be VB. The other, I believe, will come down to a choice between Milera and Mackay...

Milera has the potential to be much better than Mackay, but he's currently struggling at AFL level - he oozes class when he gets the ball, but he doesn't get enough of it. That's not a criticism of him, it's just an observation of where he is at with his development. Is he better off developing in the SANFL, or the AFL? I think he would be better off playing in the SANFL, learning how to accumulate more possessions. Milera has the potential to be a very good player, so we need to work out a development plan that is best for him. It's not a case of hating on the shiny young toy, it's wanting to see the shiny toy achieve its full potential.

Thus, I think the changes for this week should be Knight & Cameron in, VB and Milera out. I want to see more of Milera at AFL level this year, but I think he is best off in the SANFL for now.
Can't fault any of this. I would love to see Milera every week in the afl side, but you make a good argument. Perhaps a run of games in the SANFL on a HFF with insteuctions to work up and down the ground trying to accumulate possessions would serve him some good.

Also you and I see eye to eye with regard to VB and Mackay vs Lyons and CEY. I'm indifferent with who of these play if we need to play any of them as they all have average ceilings. Now that we have some depth I'll be glad when none are in the side.

Got to make a statement this week against Paer. Want Knight and Hartigan in. I think I'd like to see Menzal as well. Hit the body hard on the weekend as a few posters at the game mentioned. If Crouch gets in strife I'd prefer CEY over Lyons as Lyons didn't get competitive action.

Is that forward line all that different to North's? If we didn't think we needed Hartigan for structure against them, why would that change for Port. Surely they're not going to shelve the system after a close loss away against the Roos. If VB gets replaced, which is unlikely, you don't drop 200 game club stalwarts after one (ha, ha) poor performance, I would expect the structure to remain.

Very similar to Norths, I think we did need Hartigan for structure. If you take the average of Schulz Westhoff Dixon it's 198cm 98 Kg compared with Talia Lever Cheney 192cm 89Kg, it's too easy to expose us 1 on 1 on a fast break. If Dixon stays most forward & Talia goes to him Talia will give up 6cm & 10Kg, Schulz & Lever are very similar, when Westhoff runs forward Cheney will give away 13 cm & 9Kg. Put Cheney into the VB role & Hartigan into the Cheney role, for me thats a win win.

My only question would be whether a single game is enough to suggest that Milera is struggling at the level. I hope we give him at least a couple more, we are generally happy at selection to overlook a bad game from guys with 100 games in them, whereas we can't excuse a poor one from a guy on debut. If he's struggling after 3 games, then fair enough, down to the 2's to get your hands on the footy again.

Don't get my wrong, I agree 100%, but faced with a similar opponent our coaches went in a different direction. Why would they shelve it after 1 week. I think it would be inexcusable if Hartigan replaces VB. It means they know we needed extra height but changed our structure to include VB. It's inconceivable that these guys weren't aware of height/strength mismatches prior to last nights game.

Now that I've settled down, I'm quite content with our performance against North.
It's a difference game style and the boys need experience playing that way. We can't just expect to win games flat of the bat. We were the better team for the majority of the game, we just didn't take our chances. I'm also tipping that'll be the only game this season where Betts, Tex & Lynch don't have much of an impact on the scoreboard.

In reality we'll peak in 2018. I think that's when we'll be near unstoppable and I cannot wait for then.
This week Knight comes straight in then Cameron the week after.
Menzel won't last long in the 2s either.
Our games exp against North was 1500 wasn't it? That's bottom 4 material however we're 6-10th material in form.
Just wait until 2018 when we've got around 2500-2800 games experienced amongst the team, history has shown this is when you start seeing high end results.

It's also imperative that we chop out the dead wood right now and get games into the younger players that will benefit us for 2018 and onwards, I don't even know if we have a goal as a club to reach this milestone.

Let Milera and Knight and Atkins be 40-60 gamers by then, it will help us immensely.
Need to draw a line in the sand now.

Hopefully our coaching group aren't Neil Craig stubborn, and can tinker with structures when needed. If we don't include any extra defensive height, lets hope we can execute our team defensive structures better. Nothing I hate more than losing to the Pear!

Crouch will get off. They showed a different angle on "Bounce" and it was even clearer that it hit him in the shoulder. Waite should go for diving!

John Ralph on 504 just then goes its medium impact rough conduct 2 down to 1.:drunk: And then say Pav's should get thrown out. Not enough impact.

Fair question. He also didn't get a whole lot of the ball in the 2nd and 3rd MMC games, only the West Coast game against their U18s.

I like what he does when he gets the ball, he just needs to learn how to get it more often.

Nope, sounded precautionary more than anything, but that'd mean hes done something to it last night.
He was in a moon boot after a game up here last year and he played again the next week. I reckon they are managing something.

That's why I'm not sure that he's in line to go back to the 2's yet. His form is quite steady, it's not like he dropped off a cliff at the rise in level. But won't be surprised either way.

Yes we're developing, it is going well, we've been developing since 1998.

Thankfully we're the only team that will develop, the other teams will all stay perfectly still.

Like you, I think it could go either way. Having viable options to replace him (Knight & Cameron) makes a difference.
