So then you're in the camp that agrees we wasted a first round draft pick on a third tall, instead of on desperately needed midfield talent, when we already had the position well covered by existing players and a smart, good value trade?

Lever is either a third tall or a KPD, people can't pick and choose based on the argument they want to refute.

Oh come on, why does he have to be one or the other? You were arguing earlier that Gibson isn't a KPD based on his size of 189cm, so using your own logic Lever must be a KPD surely?

I really don't know why you are so hung up on placing him in either a 3rd tall or KPD bucket, its just a silly argument to have. Lever will be what he is according to his development both mentally and physically and what is needed for each opponent we come up against.

We need to get match-ups and structure right against each opponent, call them what you like but this is paramount........... calling players 3rd talls or KPD or whatever is just arguing for arguments sake IMO.

At this stage of his career, he's a third tall. He does have the height but not the body (yet?) to be a KPD. In my eyes, anyway. He may end up there, he may not.

Even if he "only" ends up as a third tall defender I'm not sure what the problem is. It's not like we had an elite player in that position already. Lever looks like being one. We've filled an important role with genuine class that wasn't there before. That's a good thing. And if he ends up as a KPD, that's a position of need too with Talia our only other tall backman with anything really special about him.

I agree we also need more midfield class, but we've tended to go for best available over needs in our first round pick and Lever fit that bill in his draft year. Let's be honest, we need class pretty much all over the ground. That's why we started throwing draft picks at every player with the remotest bit of x-factor about them last trade period in the hope that at least one of them turns out to be any good.

Vader wasn't defending VB's game on the weekend.... but he did manage to claim that there were others worse than VB..... An interesting stance no doubt
Lynch was the only player who was clearly worse than VB, and Lynch has far more brownie points in the bank and is far more important to the team structure than VB. Nowhere have I suggested that Lynch would, or should, be dropped, despite being a clear WOG for Adelaide last weekend.

I think the selectors were right to select VB for R1.. and right to drop him for R2. He finished 2015 well, after returning from being dropped. He had a good pre-season and performed well in the MMC games. There was no reason not to select him, particularly given that all of his likely replacements were coming back from injuries and needed to play in the SANFL to gain match fitness. Unfortunately for VB, he had an absolute nightmare last weekend. He had the worst case of the fumbles I've ever seen. Even when he did do something right (the long kick to Sauce, resulting in a goal) it was preceded by him fumbling an easy uncontested mark. Dropping him this week was a no-brainer, and I've been consistent in stating that all week.

I think the selection of Hartigan is far more interesting. It's an admission that they got the structure wrong last week, going in with one tall defender than we needed. I don't think it cost us the game - there were a number of other factors at play which were far more significant. But it was a factor, one which they have addressed this week.

He is both ..... Is better suited to a 3rd tall at the moment , will develop into a genuine KPD in next couple of years but may be just as effective as playing an intercept 3rd tall role of we want to use him in a josh Gibson kind of way

It's going to depend on what role we need him in most but he will be great at either

Hartlett and Schulz out according to afl website. Wonder if we'll drop a defender and bring in Lyons or Knight.

Howard is a first gamer but you have to respect hes 199 and can take a mark
Precisely!

McGovern was a first games last week, took marks and had 3 shots at goal.....could have kicked 2 or 3 goals and been the difference in the end.

Underestimate noobs at your own peril!

If there was ever any doubt over who Talia would take there isn't now.

Talia on Dixon
Hartigan on the noob
Lever on Hoff
Cheney punching dicks.
Did actually lol

I thought he had a couple 30+ possie games? In any case, the difference he shows in the sanfl vs afl is quite large.

I think if we went back to the history books we will find that he struggled and then had a very good game that got him back on the team

cheney on the resting mid .. i like it .. not the kpp ... i've noticed cheney not being as composed as he has been in the past ... wonder whats going on there.

He's simply not a good enough player in a top 8 side with a low injury list. It's that simple.

What about the likely weather, do we still stay tall, what if port are foxing about howard and at the last minute go short and we're caught out with talls on a slow, windy possibly showery rain affected deck?

http://www.bom.gov.au/sa/forecasts/adelaide.shtml

we have a 30% chance of rain, with a 50% chance of No rain and a 25% chance of 0.2MM of rain.

if we can't play in 0.2mm of rain then we are stuffed any way.
