On the hunt for podcast (non-footy) recommendations with the obscene amounts of driving I have over the coming weeks. So far I've really enjoyed:

True Crime Podcasts:
Serial - Sort of like making a murderer in podcast form
Trace - Cold case from 1980's Melbourne that has been reopened in part to this podcast. Awaiting further information to continue.
Felon - Short, 20min episodes recounting Australia's worst crimes.
Casefiles - still working through the eps on this one. Similar to above but worldwide.

Other:
Unburnable - Greenpeace and Nature & Youth suing the Norwegian government for breaching their constitution and the Paris agreement by opening up the arctic for oil drilling. Has been through court with a verdict due in January 2018. Good time to get on board and up to date before then.
S town - From the producers of Serial. Goes down a much different path - don't want to give too much away.
My dad wrote a porno - Some British dude found out his dad published an erotic novel under a different name. Him and two mates read it out and critique it chapter by chapter. Pretty funny and provides the lightheartedness I need after too much true crime.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations

Has anybody ever used either 1800 Got Junk or 1300 Rubbish or similar services to remove unneeded household items (couches etc).
Any recommendations?
I've used Got Junk to get rid of a couple of couches and a mattress to kind of streamline before moving. They were fine but not cheap.

Does your council offer hard rubbish collection? free!

Also if its in decent condition, the salvos might come out and take furniture off your hands, they have trucks that do that

I listen to truth & movies, little white lies and the rewatchables for movies.

Hardcore history and revisionist history are both good.

Infinite monkey cage & freakenomics

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History if you have a long drive (shortest episodes tend to be at least an hour), the Bunker (very droll pom comedy, hour long episodes) and Engineering Commons (mix of engineering and humour) are quite good. I used to have a few more but they appear to have dropped off my phone...

3 working days until stand-down!!!

YESSSSSSSSSS BAY-BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Actually, even better, probably just 2.5 working days given the traditional early stand-down on Christmas Eve.

Is anyone doing anything interesting for Christmas? I'm going to South Coast NSW where I'm making a massive outdoor seafood paella on one of those special paella burner thingies for 20 people. The wooden stirring thingy looks like a boat oar. I make the world's most excellent paella. Other than that I'm getting drunk and watching Love Actually again.

They do but not sure when it is happening. I'm moving soon so kind of need it gone.
And yeah it's in pretty sad condition. I picked it up for free when I moved out of student accommodation some years ago so it has served me well but I wouldn't pass it on to someone else.

This American Life - before there was Serial and S Town
The Boyer Lectures - Genevieve Bell this year on what it means to be an Australian in a digital world

A mate of mine recommended Dan Carlin’s hardcore history. A History podcast.

Edit: Just noticed that a few others have mentioned it also.

Dan Carlin's World War 1 series is brilliant.

Firstly, what the hell is going on in the CBD?

Secondly, why has the Age recognised that I have viewed the 30 articles allowed for non payers despite my VPN?

Is it cookie related or something like that?

What the **** happened to Triple M? One they play s**t now, secondly they're ******* stupid too
If this is a Hottest 100 rant, I'm still pissed at Triple J

Triple J have the right to poll their listeners and decide to observe their wishes. Some folks feel that listening to a set of songs on Australia day is disrespectful. And thats ok, nobody will force them to, and if others want to they can march, speak out or demonstrate peacefully about why they think they are right.

But other folks disagree, and while Triple Js regular listeners were polled, plenty of people tune in just for the Hottest 100 and dont think its disrespectful. Triple M have decided to give those people something to listen to, knowing full well that those who disagree are a vocal minority. Those who disagree have a right to listen, and if it is a prevailing opinion that they are wrong, advertisers will bail out, nobody will listen and they probably wont do it next year.

But the concept that one group of people think they have the right to decide how another group of people celebrate or observe that day disgusts me. Be vocal by all means, demonstrate and protest peacefully.

All of this is entirely separate to whether Australia day should be on the day it is, which for my money is a reasonable conversation to have.

Not to mention the poll that Triple J ran was biased as anything. The options for one question were:

> I understand the situation, and agree with the change.
> I somewhat understand the situation, and am still unsure.
> I do not understand the situation, and disagree with changing the date.

So you're either ignorant, or in favour of it. Now personally, I am neither. I fully recognise the issue around Australia Day, but I also believe that no day is going to be appropriate. Any day celebrating post-colonial Australia will be protested by the Aboriginal population for similar reasons. Moreover, it's not like we don't have disagreements over every public holiday except New Years.

Triple J went from being irrelevant 364 days a year to 365 for mine.

All fair in my view. I honestly would be fine to change it to another day but your probably right about the complaints. Id change ANZAC day as well, do a day thats significant to protecting our borders rather than violating someone elses.
