No clarity on Dustin Martin’s return, says Hardwick

Champion midfielder Dustin Martin owes the Tigers nothing, according to Richmond coach Damien Hardwick, who said there would be no pressure on the superstar to return from personal leave.

Martin sat out Sunday’s win at the MCG over the GWS Giants after taking indefinite personal leave during the week.
Hardwick said Martin, whose father Shane died suddenly in New Zealand in December last year, would be given the space he needs.

“It’s just society in general sometimes,” Hardwick said.

“Dustin Martin is a wonderful player. Do we want to see him play? Yeah. But also, it is what it is. It’s a personal issue, and we leave it at that.
“Dustin has repaid this club 10 times over.”
Asked whether he had a timeline on when Martin could return, Hardwick said: “I’ve got no clarity.”
“It’s a personal issue, and we’ll just leave it at that, and we’ll work our way through it,” he said.

Richmond covered his absence with aplomb, despite Jayden Short (33 disposals) being the only Tiger in the game’s top nine possession getters.

Noah Balta (four goals) starred in the void left by Jack Riewoldt (fractured thumb), while the Tigers - coming off a round one loss to Carlton - were also without Dylan Grimes, Nick Vlastuin and Dion Prestia.

Hardwick said Grimes would return for Sunday’s clash with St Kilda, while both Prestia and Riewoldt were chances to play if fully fit.
“I was really happy with the players I had in the side, so there are going to be some hungry players,” Hardwick said.

“It’s tough to make changes. Don’t get me wrong, those guys are really good players, but we’re really happy with the guys and what they did.”

But Hardwick said his side’s pressure was back to where it needed to be, while the Tigers also made use of their strong 1-2 ruck combination, with both Toby Nankervis (15 disposals, 21 hitouts, one goal) and Ivan Soldo (two goals) having a strong impact.
“I love the look of it,” Hardwick said.
“Those tall guys, we’ve always wanted to have that philosophy, and at various stages we have, but Soldo’s basically missed 18 months of footy, and he’s only going to get better.

“He was a little bit disappointed with his game last week, but it just takes time. He was a little bit rusty, but I thought today he took a step forward again, and he’ll get better for the run as the season progresses.”

I'm in two minds about whether Jack should come back this week or not. If he does he starts on the bench for mine. Balta needs as much game time forward as possible
I’m a bit the same. There’s no way I’m writing off JR who is a champion but you need to consider team balance.
Particularly now we are playing 2 ruckman. You lose a runner if a tall comes in.

Never said I want him to be near BOG every week, what I said is I want to see him playing in the same manner he was yesterday as opposed to the ineffective and non impactful way he played R1 and I'm sure the match committee share a similar point of view. If he isn't then we're wasting a spot carrying a soon to be retired Cotchin for the season, when his spot could be used getting game time into some kids.

We all demand that anyone who gets picked in the 22 has an impact on the game and if they aren't we call for their heads, Cotchin should be treated no differently, otherwise you're setting double standards in regards to selection and when that happens, that is when trouble starts within the group.
Agree ... Glad we are not taking the path of a certain other club that has put one of their midfield greats onto the HFF and is having zero impact.

I was confident Cotch would take r1 and park it, and come out r2 and play his usual 'attack the pill with ferocity' approach. He won't win the Brownlow, but he'll impact many games well through the year, while developing the next midfield group.

I agree, there is absolutely no rush for Jack to come back IMO. Let his thumb heal properly and see how the team goes while he is out.

I'd like to see if our forward line can back it up 2 weeks in a row without him. A proper glimpse into the future.

What about the goal review that was over turned? Is the rule not that it has to be conclsuive to overturn the decision? The potato vision they showed was anything but conclusive. Robbed a goal there.
The commentary didn't say anything about it. What did the umpire decide? If he decided a goal, then it should have been a goal as, like you said, there was no evidence to overturn it.

If you hear the ARC clown he said it’s clear the ball was controlled before it crossed the line…or words to that effect.
Commentators saying the ARC has “other” vision. No transparency.

why would JR not only come back when he is right??

For longevity reasons we want JR to last as long as possible.

Clearly the more experience Balta gets the better he will be wherever he is, gun

Geez you're kidding aren't you !?
Last week was a festival of personal abuse particularly galling was absolute rubbish about our former captain, a bunch of legends of the club being rudely questioned for lack of heart, their loyalty (selfishly playing on when they should have retired) and some of the stuff written about fringe players and ignorant, abusive posts about injured players and unavailable players made me embarrassed (and pissed off) to be a Tigers supporter.

It gets dressed up as "opinion, everyone's entitled to their opinion" but that's just a lie. It isn't an opinion, it's just unleashing anger and dissapointment on players, coaches, admin, hell anyone will do...none of it anyone here would have the balls to say to their faces.

All this after ONE ******* game. Not to mention the vitriol directed at the club recruiters, coach and assistant coaches who have been the pillars of an unprecedented period of success for the Tigers.

I had to self ban myself for a few days it was so poor. I thought some regular accounts here had been taken over by oppo trolls. It was unsavoury and piss weak and despite that, you've ended up having a crack at people in this thread who defended the club and the players.

All it took was one R1 loss for the forum to descend into chaos and abuse. Please don't make it up as something is wasn't.

It was absolute bullshit.
You’re one of the good guys ye , a breath of fresh air , the trolls that crawl from under a rock following a loss are a dead set embarrassment

can't see Jack being a hundred percent so they will not risk him
it backfired in R1 with graham, soldo, nank, grimes all being underdone or sore
Concur , had a fractured thumb from cricket , was months before it felt normal.

I think he called it a mark whicj looked like bs from where I was on the wing

I thought Soldo was getting towards something and will get better. I still think our senior players held the team together and still concerned that the youngsters aren't showing much considering they're our future. Gibcus was the pick of the kids and will be a goodun.
You didn’t think that Ralphsmith and Dow didn’t show much, TI?
Balta is also still young.

I forgot to vote for Graham, but I thought he was brilliant. Plenty of metres gained and chain work. Surprised he didn't get more votes.

Longevity??? This will be his last year for sure. Out of touch much
