So last year

we seem to have applied a list management strategy ie

we went defenders
Stevenson, Heath, Hombsch

Talls in the draft
Clurey
Shaw

Inside Mid
Wines

Small Forward
Neade

This year was a little different as we listened to Ken's needs and drafted accordingly

but we went over board with small defenders

and unnecessarily hamstrung ourselves by committing to Sam Gray

if we wanted another tiny hbf - Battersby wouldve been perfect

or even roll the dice with Dwayne Wilson

Don't understand getting medium defenders as rookies. Before the draft medium defenders in general were our area of greatest depth. Then we expanded that to have ones that also have speed. The rookie draft can be used in three ways IMO. One is giving depth in areas lacking it. We haven't done that. Second is going for x-factor players that are high risk / high reward that are too high risk for the main list. We haven't done that. Thirdly is for going for talls as they can take longer in many cases for their best to show up. We haven't done that.

The main draft and trade's in I'm happy enough as addressing our lack of line breaking, the rookie draft though makes no sense to me in the choices (other than the expected Mitchell / Renouf re-listings). Very risk adverse, going for the low risk / low return options.

Underwhelming rookie draft. Poor selections with no imagination.

I'm really disappointed we overlooked Battersby for another small defender. I assumed we wouldn't take him due to the picks made in the ND, but to take another small defender ahead of him leaves me flummoxed.

As for Gray, I can't help but think he was guaranteed a rookie just to keep him from signing for another SANFL club. Having said that, I think Gray is a better footballer than Hitchcock.

Will be interesting how many overlooked players we can attract to play in the academy side.

Hourigan, Miller, Conlon, Drummond, Rioli, Pitt, Buckby.

2 or 3 of those would be a very good result.

This would be a very very smart thing to do. Hopefully we can get some of these over.

You will find the academy (sanfl reserves/seniors) will not recruit players from other sanfl clubs. I am pretty sure it is in the agreement.
Once we start the junior academy in 2015 you may find we attract juniors from other SANFL zones considering we will no longer have a junior sanfl zone.
There is a question for KT

Once again the draft experts are out in full voice

I back the club in whatever decisions they made today. They would have a strong belief in their selections.

so you are happy with overdosing on midget defenders and just blindly accepts it because the club knows best?

lol some replies are so funny. "wtf we didnt select this guy i heard about this month who seems awesome!!! we selected some guy NO ONE has heard of, wtf!!!!"

we finished 5th, that's not blind belief. supporting the club means supporting its decisions, and i think PAFC has earned that right for now.

I can live with the Sam Gray selection on the proviso we play him as a small forward. I just question the logic of having both he and Mitchell on the rookie list.

Also not sure it's great list management to only have 3 ruckman when one has a chronic knee injury and is presumably unlikely to ever play again and another is coming of a dreaded hip operation.

Would have liked a genuine tall defender somewhere too. Only one defender >192cm is a little light on.

This year, yes.

We're obviously targeting kids to fill a specific need. Hardly ever do all the picks from a particular draft make it, but if we nail this position with 1 or 2 of this years selections, then its worked.

Everyone vomiting when BigFooty "name" players get overlooked smells of David Gourdis to me.

Let them do their jobs.

i agree the club and kenny have earnt some credits so i will also back him in with the decisions we are making.

Doesnt stop me from worrying that we are making the right ones every time... but then again rookies barely make it anyway so its not that big a deal

I was critical of the Impey selection until i saw his scout highlights the other day... so i do believe the club know what they are doing

and Hitchcock on the main list.

Why do we still need Hitchcock and Mitchell when S.Gray and M.White have made them redundant. Thats at least 2 list spots that could have been used on project talls. Someone like Jon Marsh would have been a handy.

I'd say another genuine KPD will be on the list of priorities next year. However, maybe it wont be. We clearly like the KPD stocks we have. And look, for all their lack of height, we kept 196cm Cloke, 195cm Reid, 197cm Hawkins and 193cm Podsiadly to 4 goals between them in the finals.

In the end im not too concerned we didnt go another KPF in the rookie draft. Statistically, its probably the lowest reward pick you can make. From 2001-2011 I have the success rate of rookie drafted KPFs at 6%, or 4 players out of 64 drafted. It almost never works out.

We all like to get seduced by tall timber, me definitely included, but playing the percentages, its almost pointless picking them this late.

Shit draft, shit rookie draft. We can only hope for better I guess.

I don’t want to be negative, but I’m not happy with our two new Rookies, both too small and not up to AFL standard.
Not sure about Sam Russell, but Gray won’t play any AFL…….and I don’t really rate Kane Mitchell from last year either.
IMO very disappointing – we need a couple of talls, not mids!

I'm starting it now... The draft Jack Hayes in 2014 bandwagon.

2014 the year of the tall.

Next year is a bumper year for talls so wouldnt surprise if we've doctored our drafting strategy for that very reason

Given our list needs, this was always going to be an underwhelming draft. We've gone with a clear strategy to build from defence, particularly our small to medium defenders. Hopefully it pays off.
