excellent news.

but lets say this kid really turn out to be something - If I recall he was rated very highly at the time he agreed to sign for us. that's the problem, the player got to choose his team.

how long before this latest draft incursion is ruled out?

I'm willing to bet if he continues to look good the AFL will pull out all stops to prevent him from ever playing for the Adelaide Football Club without us parting with a first round draft pick or some equivalent.

IMHO, not very long at all.

As we had a Discussion about this at the time the program was announced. This program is a classic case of rich getting stonger and poor, well remaining weak.

Financially strong clubs who are also consistently good teams will "exploit" this to their advantage as they will put more resources into scouting these kids and then offer bigger money for these kids to sign with them.

All it will take is one genuine gun youngster to be recruited by a strong team like us and the restrictions will come in in terms of not being able to offer better $$$, or being assigned a particular area until the idea gets scrapped eventually because of the inequity argument.

I guess we just have to take an advantage of it while there is a chance because the window won't be open for too long unfortunately.

Great news. Will be intersting to see how he goes against the Murray Bushrangers... Should be a evenly matched contest.
Taylor Walker is from NSW/ACT right? They beat Calder who were previously undefeated and are one of the flag favourites. The Bushies have only had two wins and based on the result against Calder I would expect NSW/ACT to account for them comfortably. Hopefully Walker gets amongst it again!

When are we able to officially list him? How do we go about it?

Use our last draft pick at the National Draft at the end of the year. Would probably have to fill in some paperwork, notifying the other teams that he's off the market - much the same as is currently done for F/S selections.

There was a discussion on the main board about the system, particularly in relation to one player that knocked back offers from the Swans and Eagles to sign with Hawthorn. The main gist seemed to be that his older brother is a scholarship holder with the Eagles but his father has observed other players further their development with Hawthorn and thought they were doing more for the players than Sydney (who also approached the player) and the Eagles.

It's funny isn't it.

Back in the 80's Greg Miller was able to pilfer John Longmire and Wayne Carey from Sydney's zone in exchange for a bumper bowling birthday party at the Dubbo AMF for Tommy Hafey, essentially handing North Melbourne a decade of dominance and a pair of flags in return for pocket change.

More recently Geelong have enjoyed a thousand quality F/S picks in the past five minutes, Brisbane got Jonathan Brown because his dad played 51 games for Fitzroy and obviously we just missed out on Bryce because although his dad played a million games for Glenelg they weren't between June 1831 and September 1833 - as such we're the only club to have never had a listed player acquired via the Father/Son Rule.

Draftwise we've never had a live pick above #7 and we're always at the mercy of homesick outerstaters wanting to move back home for what is usually a pittance and as a result drafting and grooming a Victorian project player - one who needs to spend a good 2-3 years playing SANFL and bulking up rather than being thrown in the deep end like his colleagues at struggling clubs back home - is akin to committing list suicide.

If this kid actually becomes something - not even a star, just a serviceable first teamer like Ken McGregor - this development program will be shut down quicker than Josh Thurgood on Ladies' Night at Area61.

But I thought it was a 2 year scholarship, and this would be his second year.

Plus he is already 17.

33.4.2 Primary List
Subject to the Scholarship List Player meeting age requirements under Player Rule 4, a Club may apply to the AFL to transfer a Player or Players from its Scholarship List onto its Primary List on the day when its Primary List is lodged with the AFL prior to the National Draft Selection Meeting under Player Rule 4.1.

33.4.3 Primary List during AFL Season
A Player included on a Club’s Scholarship List shall not be promoted onto the Primary List or Rookie List of an AFL Club during the Home and Away Matches or while it continues to compete in the Finals Series.

33.4.4 Maintain Primary List
Where a Club applies to the AFL to transfer a Player from its Scholarship List onto its Primary List in accordance with Rule 33.4.2, it must de-list a Player from its Primary List if that is necessary to ensure that the Club does not exceed the number of Players it is able to retain on its Primary List as required under AFL Player Rule 3.3.

33.5 Inclusion of Scholarship List Player onto Rookie List 33.5.1 Rookie List
Subject to the Scholarship Player meeting age requirements under Player Rule 5, a Club may apply to the AFL to transfer a Player or Players from its Scholarship List onto its Rookie
List provided it nominates such Player or Players prior to advising the AFL of its Primary List under Rule Player 4.1.1 and such Player consents to being nominated on the Rookie List.

So to answer your question regarding if we can draft him this year, I think we can add him to the ‘Primary list’ at the end of this season as he is already 17 years old and a current scholarship holder. IIRC under rule 4 any AFL club is only allowed to draft one 17 year old per year and since he is will not turn 18 until 2008 we must use him as our 17 year old.

We will not be able to rookie list him as he doesn’t meet the requirements for rule 5 (He has to be 18 (and under 23) before December 31 in the year he is drafted) so we cannot rookie list him until 2009.

Rookie Players said:
A rookie player must be 18 (and under 23) before December 31 in the year he is drafted. Sydney & Brisbane can include one or more players on their rookie list during the period between the NAB Pre-Season draft and the NAB Rookie Draft provided the player has resided in NSW or the ACT (in the case of Sydney) or Queensland (in the case of Brisbane) for at least three years before his selection. This encourages Sydney & Brisbane to invest in local players who were not selected at either the NAB AFL Draft or the NAB Pre-Season Draft.

Hopefully that is correct.
