Gary Ablett Senior is the best player I have ever seen with my own two eyes.
I find it hard to decide between him and his son. Seriously good genes.

Nathan looked the goods as well. Juat did not give a **** about footy.
It's not for everyone. In the end he'll go down a premiership player

Yep. The story goes the only pre-season he turned up to on time was the 2007, even then barely gave a shit yet still kicked 35 goals during the year.

Won the flag, decided he'd done enough and quit. Put a genuinely interested N Ablett into that side and we'd still be talking about Geelongs 3 peat.

Sat out the TAC cup as well because he did not want the pressure.

I reckon he was a guy who clearly loved the game but did not want to play it full time.

All good

Was Jnr in sight of his old man when he was Nathan's retirement age (or at least premiership age)?
No, obviously not.

Just call it a hunch, I never saw Nablett as being in the same echelon. It's probably a speculative and ultimately pointless exercise though.

You're wrong.

I sat behind the goals on level one with my old man in the southern stand that day.

Fair to say it was incredible. I remember seeing Mark Harvey get fed up by the third qtr and he just tried hitting or dropping the knee into Ablett whenever he got the chance (which wasn't many). Can't stop Superman with bullets sadly.

Not only was Ablett a unique blend of speed, power, balance & raw talent, he also had a healthy dose of mongrel.

Some of the freakish things Buddy does once or twice a season, Ablett was doing weekly. The stories about him in the early 80's are pretty funny...like not turning up for Hawthorn rezzies because he preferred to go hunting. Then when he came back to Geelong after a year out, Ted Whitten had to promise Alan Jeans that he would personally guarantee that he would make sure Ablett would turn up to play for Victoria if selected.
