The Hawthorn 3peat: is it an accident of history?

That's because most footy pundits don't have a clue. Adelaide were favourites this year; yet it was obvious to anyone with with any footy nous that Richmond would win easily. Interstate teams get way too much advantage during the season (and finals) and then, lo and behold, come GHF day it is revealed that they're not nearly as good as they appeared on home soil.

So what you are saying is Richmond got lucky playing a dud interstate team? Now if only they could get that lucky 3 years in a row instead of once every 30 years, they'd be less of a laughing stock.

I disagree with that, I think most AFL supporters have a pretty good understanding. Increasingly so over the last decade. The problem and beauty with predicting AFL is it has many truths. If you watched Sydney in the mid naughties you'd have thought contested football is king, Hawthorn 12-15 that uncontested football is the answer, or over the last two years that pressure undoes both. If you watched that Sydney team you'd know the importance of an even spread of talent is the most important. If you watched Collingwood 10' you'd know that a few stars can provide the class if you have the right tactics to not expose your weak links. All true and all contridicting depending on who executes the better on the day.

This post makes too much sense

Shame on you

Surely the worst aspect is this persistence that the threepeat hawks were an uncontested footy team

Ask the sydney midfield, or the freo midfield, who were supposed to be world champion pressure demons

You were, doesn't mean you abadoned all other aspects of football but your defining attribute that made you the best was other teams inability to get the ball back once you'd won it. Clarkson didn't even care about contested football during your golden era.

We were still a better team when we were winning more contested ball. We were still top 5 in contested possessions in 2014 , and #1 in clearances. We dropped down a long way in 2015 on contested possession, and somewhat dropped in clearances, but our game plan still allowed us to work with that. It wasn't until 2016 when we were last for contested possession, and our clearance rates had dropped to 10th that we started to struggle. You can't rely on your skill in maintaining possession to get you by if you're no longer getting the ball in the first place.

This thread is still going.

New Attractions Coming Soon include:

Geelong not winning a threepeat... Accident of History?

Geelong winning 5 GF's in a row (If they had won 08 and 10) A Not Accident of History?

WB 16 and Richmond 17 worse than Hawthorn 13, 14, 15, Worse than an Accident of History

Hawthorn 08... a September Accident?

Finally, You have to Lose one to Win One, Followed by You have to Win Two to Win Three.

Swans unlucky to have had their hands tied by the league. Hawthorn were at an unfair advantage by comparison.

Not sure what you mean.

Are you talking about when the best player (and layer) in the league and our generation went from the Hawks to the Swans in 2014 for minimal compo?

Or about the Swans swooping in on the Crows who were unable to fulfill an illegal arrangement with its player and the Swans obtaining that player in a manner that angered the rest of the clubs?

Or about COLA?

Or were you being sarcastic, in which case.............. yes.

Trading bans. Ridiculous to hamstring a side that was simply following the rules.

^^^How was the trade ban relevant to 2014, when we beat them fair and square, or 2015 when

Well not really, if you cut the crap you can see that Pickering and the Swans had engineered a contract by abusing the cost of living scheme (which was designed to help with equalisation). What's more they new the system was on the way out and they tried to milk it for all it was worth.

What's even more is that the league didn't give them a trade ban. The Swans had the option to keep trading if they gave up the COLA payments - but of course they preferred the cash.

Anyway, all clubs bend the rules, including mine. Sometimes you still get don(e).

Didn't affect the hawks? Arguably their closest rival wasn't allowed to trade in any players.

So in 2015 our closest rival had a player who could not compete in the finals for mental health reasons called Buddy and a team we wiped the floor with, but who could not springboard off their COLA advantage to challenge us - an advantage they had in 2015 - and whom we smashed in the GF in 2014 and should have beaten in 2012?

Where have those deadly dangerous Swans been all our lives?

Those GFs were actually pretty amazing in this respect. Brought a hugely contested game on the most important day. Saved that s**t for when it counted

Totally out-pressured tough midfield teams .

This is what Adelaide and GWS have not done. Thought that their X factor and talent could win a flag. You need a bit of c*** in your team as well

That’s true but Clarko had a home and way style and a finals style. If you play high pressure footy all year you’re cooked by season’s end

Not an accident at all. 3 top sides dropped off in 2012 opportunities like that rarely come along but it's no accident.

Teams like Sydney, Port, Freo, West Coast replaced the better teams and grand finals. Hawthorn never had to face the Geelong, Collingwood, St Kilda sides in their finals campaigns.

It's no different than if Geelong, Adelaide, GWS dropped off next season. It would leave Richmond with a bunch of lesser sides,

You guys love to point out COLA and deride the swans, a great club who remain up and around the mark to this very day. If you are going to discount them because of COLA (which was totally within the rules) providing some sort of advantage, then you must also acknowledge the advantages hawthorn received. This included compromised drafts, the ability to trade payers in for cheap and a rival who was banned from improving their side.
