The Knock that made or destroyed a player.

Koschitzke was shaping a star before he got his clock knocked off. Only a very average player now.

Selwood seems to get better with each concussion ;)

I'm not sure that knock was the only reason Kosi has never really fulfilled his early potential, he has had a number of other injuries which have restricted him. His own clumsiness and lack of awareness hasn't helped, in fact it was his lack of awareness that led to him being cleaned up by Gia.

winston abraham took himself out
LOL well played. You are correct though, that was the final time Winnie ever graced an AFL arena. Hard to believe it was already 11 years ago. Pretty sad way to go out when you consider the awesome highlights he provided over the years.

Mark Ricciuto's one that destroyed Dean Kemp

As an Eagles fan I gotta say this... that was a brilliant, epic bump. Just a pity it was used on Tommy. But then again, used on someone with a bigger build and it might not have been so epic.

Mark Coughlan lined up Campbell Brown in 2003 from the back of the square but came off second best. Unfortunately, Coughlan's career never took off (for reasons other than this bump) while Campbell Brown announced himself to Hawthorn fans as a bloke who would give his all to the club until he decided to enjoy a playing retirement amongst the sun and surf up north.

Brad Sewell being cleaned up by Matthew Lloyd was Lloyd's last significant act on the AFL footy field. Sewelly took some time to get going after that, but he's been an important player for Hawthorn this season.

Harbrow cleaned up Jordan Lewis a couple of years back. Lewis had a reputation amongst non-Hawthorn fans of being suspended a bit more than average, but the fact that he came back on later in the game was a testament to Lewis' courage.

The other career ending knock that comes to mind was Holland on Montgomery in the 06 finals. It was a massive hit that got him flush in the upper torso and threw his body back so far that it was more than 180% when he made contact with the turf. Montgomery never played again.

Dean Wallis knocked out Schauble off the ball in an Anzac Day game. Was never the same afterwards.

You do realise he won a B&F in Sydney??? Unless you mean he improved?

Scott Direen was a solid young backman for the Swans in the mid 90's, probably the best I've seen in bringing the ball back in after a behind. Brilliant kick. He was cleaned up, fairly, by Mark Merenda at Waverley in '96 after a hospital pass from Troy Gray left him vulnerable. He got back later in the year but was NEVER the same player, moving to Norwood to finish his career in the SANFL a few years later...

Destroyed a player: Cameron Bruce destroyed by Brent Guerra on the disgraceful Colonial Stadium. Was never the same after the dirty hairpiece ran his shoulder into the turf.

Made a player: David Neitz against Hawthorn. He was always an outstanding player but I remember a game where he ran through a Hawthorn player (about 10 years ago), gathered the ball and snapped a goal at the G. He really took his game to the next level after that and lead the team into several finals campaigns.

John Greening.

/thread

Bullshit John Greening owns this thread, sensational young player who had his career destroyed and almost killed by a low dog act.
You guys have obviously never heard of Neil Sachse, who ended up a quadraplegic after his collision with Fitzroy's Kevin O'Keefe in 1975.

Gia's hit on Kosi owns this thread.

Not really. Kosi was overrated and underperforming then too.

Greening's the obvious standout in terms of an established, gun footballer being cut down in his prime. Sachse for different reasons. I can think of a couple of others:

- Gary Ablett running through John Gastev a couple of times, once at the Gabba and once at Geelong. Not sure how long Gastev played after that.

- Gary Ablett busting Anthony Banik's shoulder in 1991 at Waverley. Can't remember him playing too long after it, don't know if that was a factor or not.

I'm sure there are plenty of others from elsewhere too.

Luke McCabe.

Was a great bump from memory. Team lifter.

Montgomery kicked four that game.

Tony Modra was never the same after Worsfold's gutless hit.

Not sure if serious??

The hit was certainly not gutless, and Modra still had some great years after this. In fact, he missed one week after this hit and then came back and kicked 5, 7, 6 and 6 goals in his next four matches.

Edit: Just watched the video again and it was the perfect spoil.

Purely from a Hawthorn perspective, Russell Morris got KO'd in 87 v Brissy and was never the same. Pritchard struggled after being smashed by Roger Merrett up north.

Jordan Lewis has taken his game to a whole new level since that brutal hit by Harbrow. I can tell you he wasn't right for about 6 weeks after that.

Dermott and Dipper were already champions before they took their hits in the 89 epic. Many opposition supporters hated those two for good reason but on that day they showed why they were champions.
